Basic Trope: Two characters maintain a romantic relationship over the course of eternity.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob maintain a romantic relationship for eternity.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice and Bob are still star-crossed lovers after eons.
    • Alice and Bob watch the universe evaporate into nothing/time repeat itself as they continue to hold on to each other.
    • Alice and Bob live in a whole society of immortals, whose courtship rites consider any love less than 300 (earth) years to be mere infatuation. Meanwhile, the one-millennia anniversary is a date to celebrate in style.
  • Downplayed: Alice and Bob only love each other for a matter of centuries before breaking up.
  • Justified: Alice and Bob are immortal robots programmed to love each other.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Alice and Bob are immortal and begin falling for each other, only for something to ruin the moment and return them to the status quo for another fifty years.
  • Double Subverted: Alice and Bob, two immortals, were in puppy love while the pyramids were being built. Around the fall of Rome they agreed that they didn't work, and they ought to see other people. They became friends again at Queen Victoria's coronation. Right around the time of the first Mars colony, they decide to give love another shot, and this time, it works out.
  • Parodied: Alice and Bob are a bickering couple after millennia. Alice complains about how Bob is a no-good layabout, while Bob just drinks and watches TV.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice and Bob are both immortal but their relationship is purely platonic.
  • Enforced: Charlie, writing a series of books about the immortal romance of Alice and Bob, tries to break them up, but realizes that they are the only two characters who could possibly be in a relationship with each other and gets them back together on a regular basis.
  • Lampshaded: "Wow, you're still going at it?"
  • Invoked: Alice and Bob become immortal. Bob uses the fact that Alice will never find another immortal to convince her to have a relationship with him.
  • Exploited: Bob realizes that Alice will always come back to him because they are the only two who are immortal. He uses this to toy with her and abuse her for his own amusement.
  • Defied: Alice and Bob become immortal. Bob is about to ask if Alice will be his girlfriend only for her to cut him off, saying, "Not a chance."
  • Discussed: Alice and Bob are immortals and wonder aloud of they are starting to have feelings for each other or if they should try getting together.
  • Conversed: Alice and Bob live in a society of immortals, with its share of Gossipy Hens who play matchmaker-or-breaker, saying "Oh, sure it's fun now, but in five hundred years they'll be at each other's throats."
  • Played For Drama: Bob's and Alice's immortality was achieved at the cost of removing their free-will and independent/critical thought, making them incapable of doing anything but intensely loving each other.
