Basic Trope: Characters have Medium Awareness when it comes to the end of the work.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob seem to believe This Is Reality, but at the Grand Finale, Alice turns to the audience and says "I know this is the end, but we will always be with you. Goodbye."
  • Exaggerated: This happens at the end of every chapter/episode, but other than that Alice and Bob clearly state that This Is Reality.
  • Downplayed: It was the end of the series, but also a funeral, or the end of some sort of In-Universe event, so Alice could have been talking about the end of the series, or the end of the person's life/end of the event.
  • Justified:
    • Medium Awareness is unreliable, and Alice's just happened to only come on at the end, adding that she knew it was the end.
    • No Fourth Wall in an educational program.
  • Inverted: Alice and Bob only have Medium Awareness at the beginning of the show.
  • Subverted: The last episode turns out to be a Series Fauxnale, the next season beginning with Alice apologizing to the audience for assuming the last season's final episode was the end of the series.
  • Double Subverted: Word gets out that this new season is the last season for real, so Alice takes the opportunity to inform the audience that this time there really won't be any more episodes.
  • Parodied: Alice says "I ordered this Medium Awareness specially to say goodbye".
  • Zigzagged: ???
  • Averted: The characters do not sense the impending end of the series.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need to let the audience know there will be no more episodes, let's have the characters say so and give them Medium Awareness!"
    • The creators feel that the Grand Finale won't feel complete without the characters openly acknowledging that the last episode really is the last episode.
  • Lampshaded: "End of what? Who are you saying goodbye to, Alice?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: The characters know when not to start Breaking the Fourth Wall if they know there are no people watching anymore.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: "Will we know when it's the end of our show?"
  • Conversed: "Why does Alice suddenly have Medium Awareness, now that the show is ending?"
  • Implied: Alice is seen writing a goodbye poem for seemingly no reason on the Grand Finale.
  • Deconstructed: The characters treat the end like the End of the World as We Know It.
  • Reconstructed: Now the writers aren't controlling them, they can do whatever they want.
  • Played for Drama: Alice gives a farewell speech to the audience, that sounds like a solemn eulogy.
