Basic Trope: A work establishes where it takes place by showing or mentioning a famous landmark in that place.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob are in Paris. The camera shows a wide view of the city, complete with the Eiffel Tower, in the opening shot.
  • Exaggerated: The only things Alice and Bob seem to do are see the famous monuments of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, a mime…
  • Downplayed: Alice and Bob are shown seeing less iconic but still well-known parts of Paris.
  • Justified: Bob and Alice live within view of the Eiffel Tower.
  • Inverted: Alice and Bob see seemingly everything in Paris except the Eiffel Tower.
  • Subverted:
    • We see Bob and Alice at the Eiffel Tower, but it's revealed to just be an Imagine Spot Bob has while they're still at Charles de Gaulle Airport. Alice reminds him they're just visiting her grandmother's house.
    • We see a shot of the Eiffel Tower, but the camera zooms out to reveal it to be just a souvenir in a shop.
    • We see the Eiffel Tower, but a label is shown saying "Las Vegas".
    • Alice and Bob are in a hotel in Paris. Alice opens the blinds to the window, but instead of the Eiffel Tower being revealed, it's just a parking lot.
    • The camera shows the Eiffel Tower, but then pans out to show that it's not in the city we call Paris. It could be an Alternate History work where the Tower was moved to Berlin, or that the city is called "Lutetia." Or maybe the Tower is in Paris … which is to say, a space city called "Paris."
  • Double Subverted:
    • Alice and Bob's journey to her grandmother's house takes the camera past the Eiffel Tower.
    • The camera pans out from the souvenir shop to show the Tower itself.
  • Parodied
    • Alice and Bob are in Little Paris, yet they are seen passing by the Louvre and the Notre Dame cathedral. When they get to the hotel and open the blinds, the Eiffel Tower is right in front of them.
    • Alice and Bob climb the Eiffel Tower to see the view from the top. When they make it to the top, they can still see the Tower over the horizon.
  • Zig-Zagged: The Eiffel Tower is sometimes visible, sometimes not, and when it's not, the reasons why can vary greatly.
  • Averted:
    • The Eiffel Tower is not seen, nor are any other iconic Parisian monuments.
    • We see only a brief shot of the Eiffel Tower passing by in the background.
  • Enforced: Alice and Bob are characters in a geography Edutainment Show.
  • Lampshaded: "Wow, you really can see the Eiffel Tower from anywhere in Paris!"
  • Invoked: Alice and Bob arrange a tour to see the Eiffel Tower.
  • Exploited: Claude and Émilie decide to meet them at the Eiffel Tower, knowing that all tourists in Paris go directly there.
  • Defied: Alice and Bob refuse to visit the Eiffel Tower, or if they do, circumstances prevent them from so doing.
  • Discussed: Alice and Bob debate whether they should visit the Eiffel Tower. Bob notes that they can see its outside all they want, while Alice notes it's not the same as going up oneself.
  • Conversed: "Why does every foreign travel episode resort to the best-known monument to show where people are? Do they think Viewers Are Morons?"
  • Deconstructed: The instant association of the Eiffel Tower with Paris becomes vice versa, and if it has to be closed, the city's tourism industry suffers.
  • Reconstructed: …for the relatively brief time it takes the locals who work at other attractions to start promoting them.
