Basic Trope: Gender reassignment is a very simple and straightforward thing.

  • Straight: Albert decides that "he" is really a "she," (and that her name is Alice) and sees a doctor about gender reassignment. An appointment is booked for a week later, and she walks out of the hospital with breasts, new genitals, a driver's license that reads "Alice" instead of "Albert," and a (complimentary) nice dress.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice doesn't even have to go to the hospital: she is given pills to take, and wakes up the next day in the body she wants. Oh, and with pretty much no effort on her part (even if she wasn't particularly attractive before), she looks like a gorgeous supermodel.
    • Alice goes to the hospital on her lunch break, and comes back to work as if she had just gone to a local restaurant for lunch, only with a new body.
  • Downplayed: Getting hormones and surgery, plus the legal identity changes, take less time and less red tape.
  • Justified:
    • Alice lives in an advanced sci-fi setting where technology has made changing your gender a relatively easy and painless process.
    • Alice goes to see a witch or wizard.
    • Alice has Bizarre Alien Biology, and can change sexes at will note , or whenever it's needed (such as when her mate dies).
    • Alice is a Time Lady, who can regenerate into any gender (or no gender at all).
    • Alice prays to her god(s), who being, well, gods can do pretty much anything, easily, including giving her a new body.
  • Inverted:
    • Just to get hormones (never mind surgery), Alice must see a gender therapist 3x a week, and live and present as a female for several months or years. There's also a lot of red tape regarding her driver's license, birth certificate, and other legal documentation. And the costs of the hormones, therapy, and surgery are all or mostly on Alice (even if she is dysphoric to the point of attempting suicide without them).
    • Alice gathers the courage to come out, and lives life as a proud trans women... until someone tells her she's "just a silly boy" who simply got confused from living in today's society. She's instantly convinced by this and starts feeling completely male.
  • Subverted: Albert seems to walk out of the room as Alice but Alice is just a look a like.
  • Double Subverted: Alice is Alvin who just had a surgery recently.
  • Parodied: Albert walks into a phone booth, and Alice walks out.
  • Zig Zagged: Some characters who transition have an easy time, others don't.
  • Averted:
    • Albert doesn't identify as anything other than male, nor does he have gender-reassignment surgery or treatment of any kind.
    • There are no transgender characters In-Universe.
    • Gender reassignment is shown to be a long, complex, expensive, and drawn-out process.
  • Enforced: Artistic License, Old Friend, New Gender
  • Lampshaded: "Didn't she have a penis just yesterday?"
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz figures it would be easier helping Albert become the woman they always wanted to be, and thus wastes no time or effort in accomplishing that as fast & absolutely as possible.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz baits Albert with the idea, and even eliminates any other providers so Albert is forced to accept Evulz' conditions if he ever wants to be Alice.
  • Defied: Albert lives in a future where a sex change can be done overnight, at the cost of at least two million dollars. Albert chooses the slower route because he doesn't want to spend that much money so quickly.
  • Discussed:???
  • Conversed: ???
