Playing With / Double Standard: Rape, Sci-Fi

Go To

Basic Trope: A rape through magical or sci-fi means is not treated as seriously as mundane rape.

  • Straight: Bob uses a love potion to make Alice fall in love and have sex with him. Alice is mildly put off afterwards but ends up staying with him and this is not considered rape.
  • Exaggerated: Bob gives Alice a love potion that makes Alice fall in love and have sex with him. No one thinks there's anything wrong with this, and it's implied that this was all right to stop Alice from being "uptight".
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob is condemned for using a love potion on Alice, but it's not seen as criminal.
    • Alice already liked Bob and was probably up for having sex with him, but Bob gives her a magical aphrodisiac to cinch it.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Bob's love potion is for some reason considered worse than regular rape and a Moral Event Horizon.
  • Subverted: Bob expects everyone to be okay with his love potion, but they are horrified and call the police on him.
  • Double Subverted: Bob is not charged with anything and most people don't take it seriously.
  • Parodied: Love potions are marketed using the tagline: "One drop and she won't tell you to stop!"
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Bob's use of a love potion to get laid is portrayed as rape, pure and simple.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Is anyone else worried about Alice's ability to consent in this situation? Just me?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Bob genuinely rapes Alice, then feigns innocence by claiming he was using a love potion.
  • Defied: Charlie notices that Bob has drugged Alice with love potion, so he takes Alice to a safe place before Bob can have his way with her.
  • Discussed: "Hey look, they're selling love potions here. Can you believe they're actually legal?"
  • Conversed: "It's weird that fantasy treats love potions as a normal thing. Like it's totally okay to magically drug someone into having sex with you."
