Basic Trope: No matter what a character does, they somehow cause something horrible to happen to somebody else.
- Straight: Any person Alex interacts with ends up having something terrible happen to them.
- Exaggerated:
- Alex is simply walking down the sidewalk and every person he passes suddenly drops dead.
- Walking Disaster Area
- Downplayed: Alex is The Jinx.
- Justified:
- Cosmic forces that exist in The 'Verse are interfering in some way with Alex's fate.
- Someone has it out for Alex, and will kill anyone near him just to make him suffer.
- Alex has the power to manipulate luck, destiny, chance or some similar concept but suffers from Power Incontinence, or he's not even aware of his power on a conscious level, and his power runs amok because he can't control it.
- Inverted: Alex's presence bring good fortune to the people around him.
- Subverted: People tend to die around Alex...because he kills them.
- Double Subverted: People tend to die around Alex, because he kills them...but it turns out that it's always via involuntary manslaughter.
- Parodied: Any time Alex passes by a studio they wind up making a Doom remake.
- Zig Zagged: Alex realizes that he causes a lot of misery where he goes, so he decides to become a doctor to make up for it. It works for a while, until well patients happen to die and Alex soon realizes that he can't escape what happens when he's around.
- Averted: Good things happen to all who encounter Alex.
- Enforced: The fans are tired of superheroes with normal powers, so the writers create Alex, whose power is the opposite of normal.
- Lampshaded: "Alex is like Born Unlucky but instead everyone around him gets his bad luck."
- Invoked: Alex weaponizes this trope, using it to take out an enemy.
- Exploited: A man seeks out Alex to help him kill a few people, or at least make them suffer.
- Defied: "Screw Destiny!"
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "Every person around Alex seems to have something bad happen to them not soon after. I'm definitely not about to befriend him..."
- Deconstructed: If Alex is a truly nice All-Loving Hero he may end up being Driven to Suicide, if not then either he end ups in a prison friendless for the misfortune he caused or he is killed for the greater good.
- Reconstructed: The heroes realize how dangerous Alex is, so they send Alex to unite with Emperor Evulz's forces, Alex is The Mole.
- Played For Drama:
- Alex seems to enjoy hurting all the people closest to him, but it turns out that it's not the case.
- Alex suffers from the Cartwright Curse, and Angsts over it. He might even decide not to have a relationship if it puts his beloved in danger.
- Played For Horror: The Alex film series revolves around how Alex is so unlucky that he constantly attracts murderers who then slaughter everything he loves.
Back to Doom Magnet, but I hope you don't meet Alex. Everybody he meets eventually seems to die...
