- The musical number took place in an already surreal location, or while someone is using their powers.
- One or more characters were actually on drugs, delusional, or otherwise hallucinating.
- The musical number is in a Dream Sequence.
- Inverted: The whole movie is nothing but Deranged Animation, but the musical numbers actually make more coherent sense.
- Subverted:
- Bob starts singing, and the background starts to fade to a surreal one, but then Bob turns around and says "No, go back," and the background goes back to normal.
- The "acid sequence" is actually occurring in real life.
- Double Subverted: But then Bob says "Actually, now I miss the surreal colors. Bring them back, please," and they come back.
- Parodied: Alice can't handle the bright colors and shouts "MY EYES!"
- Zig-Zagged: The visuals keep shifting back and forth between mundane and spectacular.
- Averted: None of the musical numbers are given any unusual visuals.
- Enforced:
- It's a rather psychedelic song, so surreal visuals only make sense.
- "This musical number probably wouldn't be so interesting or memorable if the characters just sung and danced to it. Why don't we add some abstract visuals to illustrate the song's tune?"
