Basic Trope: One character doesn't like the new member of the team.
- Straight: Franklin is a new member of Bob's erstwhile team. Bob, Danny, Harry, and Alice give him a warm welcome, but Charlie is not happy about this and treats him with disdain.
- Exaggerated:
- Ever since Franklin joins the team, Charlie Takes a Level in Jerkass, and gets every opportunity to spite him.
- Charlie only likes Bob (and the original team at most), and dislikes every new member who joins the team after them.
- Downplayed: While he isn't outright hostile towards Franklin, Charlie is aloof and frosty around him.
- Justified:
- Charlie is not used to new people joining the group.
- Charlie suspects that Franklin is The Mole trying to destroy the team from within.
- Charlie is just a Jerkass.
- Charlie is a Politically Incorrect Hero and Franklin belongs to one or more groups he doesn't like much.
- Franklin used to bully Charlie when they were younger. Despite that he changed his ways, Charlie refuses to accept him.
- Franklin is a bit of a showboat, which annoys Charlie, though the others don't mind it.
- Franklin turns out to be The Load and, for whatever reason, only Charlie recognizes him as such.
- Charlie is jealous of Franklin, perhaps because he's The Ace, which displaces Charlie as the Hyper-Competent Sidekick.
- Franklin is naïve and inexperienced, and Charlie doesn't have the patience to bring him up to speed.
- Franklin is taking the spot that used to belong to Charlie's friend George (who was killed or otherwise Put on a Bus), so Charlie resents him for taking George's place.
- Franklin is too much like George for Charlie's liking.
- Charlie is in love with Alice, but she doesn't feel that way about him, while she does fall in love with Franklin.
- Franklin used to be a villain and joined the team after his Heel–Face Turn.
- Inverted:
- Franklin joins Bob's group, but he has a dislike for Charlie.
- The group hates newcomer Franklin, except for Charlie.
- Charlie's the one who helps Franklin get a spot on the team.
- Subverted: Charlie starts to warm up to Franklin after he proves his worth.
- Double Subverted: An episode later, he hates him all over again.
- Parodied:
- Franklin joins Team Bob and Charlie doesn't smile at him as broadly as the others did. This stuns Franklin.
- Everyone likes Franklin equally, but Franklin thinks Charlie doesn't.
- Franklin soon becomes the guy grudgingly tolerated by the True Companions, but Franklin only takes Charlie's dislike to heart.
- Charlie's dislike of Franklin is comparatively subtle and mild: he refers to the others as "My trusted teammates and Franklin." Despite this, Franklin acts like Charlie wants to murder him.
- Zig-Zagged:
- Charlie goes back and forth on thinking of Franklin positively versus negatively.
- Charlie is suspicious of Franklin at first, then warms to him, but around the same time, Harry gets cooler towards Franklin for unrelated reasons. And Harry isn't even fully over his hang-ups about Franklin before Alice expresses some of her own.
- Averted: All Franklin's new teammates treat him with respect.
- Enforced: "We need to create some interesting conflict in the episode. I know, we'll have the dissenting lancer hate on the new guy for whatever reason."
- Lampshaded: "You don't like new guys that much, don't you?"
- Invoked: Charlie doesn't want any more people on the team and does his best to drive away Franklin.
- Exploited: Charlie's other rival, Roger, who has been trying to join the team and agrees with the others in liking Franklin, emphasizes this fact to Bob.
- Defied:
- Charlie keeps an open mind about Franklin.
- Bob removes Charlie from the group when his mistreatment of Franklin goes too far.
- Discussed:Charlie: I'm not sure it's wise to let him join us.Bob: Why not? Just because he's new?
- Conversed: "Franklin's not going to leave the show so soon just because Charlie doesn't like him; his actor signed a two-year contract."
- Implied: Charlie scowls at the thought of Franklin joining the team.
- Deconstructed:
- Charlie's cold treatment of Franklin causes him to quit the group. The heroes are disgusted with Charlie and kick him out.
- Charlie's disdain for Franklin undermines team cohesion and screws up an important mission.
- Reconstructed: Then Charlie gets himself in trouble and is in need of help. Franklin sees him, and while very reluctant at first, he decides to help him anyway. Charlie reconciles with Franklin and both are back in the group.
- Played for Laughs: Charlie's insults to Franklin are hilarious.
- Played for Drama: Charlie's insults to Franklin are traumatic to him — and maybe even his other teammates.
