Basic Trope: A character discovers that they were wrong about how they believed someone died.

  • Straight: Alice believes that her friend Bob died in a car crash, but it turns out that Charlie murdered him instead.
  • Exaggerated: Alice believes that Bob was killed in a car crash... but he didn't actually die at all, and is still out there.
  • Downplayed: Alice believes that Bob died in a car accident, and that he was deemed dead on arrival. In reality, Bob actually survived the initial crash, but emergency workers couldn't revive him.
  • Justified:
    • Alice got her information on Bob's death from a non-reputable source.
    • Critical information was not available when the accident was first investigated.
  • Inverted: Alice is falsely told that Bob is still alive, when in fact he's dead.
  • Subverted: Alice learns that Bob actually wasn't murdered by Charlie...
  • Double Subverted: ...in fact, he died of a heart attack.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • … triggered by Charlie. (Jury's still out on if he knew what his actions would do)
    • There are several possible causes of death for Bob, and it's left ambiguous as to which one is true.
  • Averted:
    • Bob never dies.
    • Alice finds out how Bob dies, and it turns out to be accurate the first time.
  • Enforced: The show's writers wanted to retcon the cause of Bob's offscreen death, so they stated that the original report of his death was false.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Charlie gives Alice false information to cover his tracks.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice doesn't believe the false information about Bob's death, and demands to know how he actually died.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • Alice makes many guesses on how Bob died, but all her statement are proven false. She then decides that enough is enough and quits being a detective out of resentment towards her peers.
    • Alice keeps on being fed lies as to how Bob died, which drives her towards depression and fear of people.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Alice actually makes for a whole lot better detective than she thinks she is according to her parents, which restores her motivation to deduce how Bob actually died.
    • Alice is told to not trust the people who lied to her about Bob's death, and asks for help from the more trustworthy people who have more reliable evidence.
