Basic Trope: A character or characters die due only to bad luck or random chance.

  • Straight: Alice stops to tie her shoe, and gets hit and killed by a meteorite.
  • Exaggerated: A massive number of meteorites level a city, and Alice is the only fatality.
  • Downplayed: Alice is struck by a meteorite while she ties her shoe, but she survives.
  • Justified: Alice has horrible luck.
  • Inverted:
    • Serendipitous Survival
    • Without noticing the incoming meteorite, Alice finishes tying her shoe and walks away just seconds before it hits. She survives.
  • Subverted: Alice notices the falling meteorite and dives out of the way. She lives.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Take a Moment to Catch Your Death
    • Alice dives out of the meteorite's path and lives... and then gets struck and killed by a cement truck because she accidentally jumped into the street.
  • Parodied: Alice dies when a massive amount of meteorites all happen to strike her house while she's there.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice doesn't die due to bad luck, or even at all.
  • Enforced: "This is a dark series where Anyone Can Die. Let's kill off a capable character due to sheer bad luck."
  • Lampshaded: "If only Alice hadn't stopped to tie her shoe, she'd be alive!"
  • Invoked: Whatever cosmic beings are up there decide that it'd be really hilarious that Alice dies in the most gruesome, possibly even undignified way possible, and so they ramp up her bad luck to absurd degrees.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Seriously? There's no way she could have survived that! If you're gonna kill off a main character, at least give them a fair fight!"
