Basic Trope: A fanfiction much scarier/sadder/more serious (generally Darker and Edgier) than the original work.
- Straight: Alice and Bob is a show which is usually comedic, upbeat, and makes use of The Power of Friendship, but someone writes a fanfiction out of it titled Alice and Bob: The Madness, where Alice dies and Bob has heavy emotional problems.
- Exaggerated: Alice and Bob is the happiest show on Earth, set in a Sugar Bowl, but in The Madness, all the darkest topics (death, incest, rape, psychological and physical health problems, etc.) are thrown into it.
- Downplayed: The Madness feels like a Very Special Episode, but everyone is fine.
- Justified: Someone on the fan boards pointed out a nasty Fridge Horror plot point that was glossed over in-series, and it gives the fanfic writers ''ideas''.
- Inverted: A Lighter and Softer-to-the-point-of-saccharine fanfiction titled Alice and Bob: The Happy World of Alice and Bob, an extremely dark show which Crosses the Line Twice.
- Subverted: Alice didn't die after all.
- Double Subverted: But up until that it was eerily serious.
- Parodied:
- The fanfiction is meant to be a parody as a Take That!
- The fanfiction would be a completely normal Alice and Bob fic if not for the characters mentioning that they have AIDS every other sentence. (This has no plot bearing whatsoever.)
- Averted: The fanfiction is just as happy as the show.
- Zig-Zagged: The show swings between as happy as the regular show, a bit more serious, very dark, and saccharine.
- Enforced: The original show was too lighthearted, and the fans wanted more emotional diversity.
- Lampshaded: "Aren't we usually bouncing around and getting ourselves into comical situations?"
- Invoked: General Drake deliberately kills Alice to make everyone sad.
- Exploited: There are some demons which feed off sadness, they get plenty to feed on now.
- Defied: Alice and Bob learn some sort of magic to prevent death and other misfortunes from happening to them.
- Discussed: "Wait ... Alice died? Doesn't something funny happen to us every day? Couldn't we use The Power of Friendship to save her or something?"
- Conversed: "This fic is weird. There'd never be an episode that serious."
- Implied: The fic's content warning tags are a mile-long list of every "read at your own risk" fanfic trope.
- Played for Laughs: A lighthearted work is turned into a Black Comedy.
