Playing With / Conveniently Timed Guard

Go To

Basic Trope: The heroes have just finished their infiltration, but on their way out a guard sees them and sounds the alarm.

  • Straight: While the Four-Man Band, consisting of Harry Oswalt, Pete Perkins, Eddie Roque, and Flash Young, have just finished snooping around and looking at all the cool things (though in Pete's case, snapping pictures in order to impress his boss John Joshua Johnson) in an Unguided Lab Tour of some hidden facility located in Oswalt Enterprises, before a guard spots them about to leave. The alarms are sounded, and soon enough, the Four-Man Band are forced to fight their way out of Oswalt Enterprises.
  • Exaggerated: The Four-Man Band had finished snooping around, before it's revealed the Clairvoyant Security Force had been completely aware of their infiltration the entire time. Cue the Four-Man Band having to fight off around half a million faculty just to get the hell out of there.
  • Downplayed: The Four-Man Band had finished snooping around, but it's only after they've left the facility that a guard notices that someone's been sneaking around. This causes Oswalt Enterprises to go on lockdown, and the Four-Man Band has to find their way out of there. They may either be spotted and forced to fight, or sneak out unnoticed.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: The Four-Man Band gets caught the very instant they enter; However, they manage to hide away for now after having beaten up a few guards who couldn't sound the alarms on time. Eventually, towards the very end, they leave the premises completely unnoticed.
  • Subverted: Flash knocks the guard out clean...
  • Double Subverted:
  • Parodied: This happens every time they try to infiltrate or exfiltrate an area. Much to the exasperation of... Just about everyone in the Four-Man Band.
  • Zig-Zagged: The Four-Man Band's infiltration and stealth success rates tend to fluctuate all the time.
  • Averted:
  • Enforced: To have a spy action's cake and eat it too; Sure, all the tense, thrilling stealth is fun, but they also want their action, complete with fists flying, guns shooting, and action all around.
  • Lampshaded: "So a guard finds us now? How convenient."
  • Invoked: Eddie decides to attract some attention for a fancy getaway. Chew outs from his teammates afterwards optional.
  • Exploited: The Four-Man Band knows this is going to happen, and they decide that they should at least prevent the guards from ever getting to them in the first place.
  • Defied:
    • Flash takes out all the guards, citing Leave No Witnesses for his reasoning.
    • Harry ensures everyone is extra stealthy here; They don't want to get caught.
  • Discussed: While planning the infiltration in the first place:
Harry: Beware of the guards around here. Even one spotting us is enough to raise some hell.
Pete: Alright, but do you think it's gonna happen as we leave the place?
Eddie: Of course it will, in which case we make a fancy getaway.
Flash: Or I just knock the guard out.
  • Conversed: The Four-Man Band are consuming a piece of spy media:
Harry: This is getting pretty tense. Only one guard and it's raising hell.
Pete: Do you think that one of them will catch the guy as he's leaving the place?
Eddie: Of course he will, in which case there's gonna be a fancy getaway.
Flash: What beats me's why he ain't knockin' the guard out.

We're just finishing up the vandalization, natter, and word cruft around here... Hey wait, is that a... Oh fuck, it's a Conveniently Timed Guard! Run, RUN!!!
