Basic Trope: The biggest bosses are unaffected by status effects and one-hit KOs.

  • Straight: Emperor Evulz is the last boss of the game and is immune to death spells, as well as most status effects.
  • Exaggerated:
    • All bosses in the game and some of the mooks are immune to all status effects.
    • Bosses aren't just immune to status effects, they have abilities that give them an advantage when affected by them.
    • The boss is immune to all forms of damage and requires one very specific strategy to win.
  • Downplayed:
    • Evulz only has partial immunity; he’s stunned for a turn by petrification, but that’s about it.
    • Evulz can only resist one status effect at a time.
    • Evulz goes from immune to a falling resistance as his health drops.
    • On various enemies the One-Hit Kill spell has a 30 to 40% chance of succeeding, on Evulz it has a 5% chance.
    • Instant death spells are reduced to just doing 9999 damage on Evulz, even though it would normally cause instant death to creatures with more than 9999 health.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • Evulz is immune to most forms of damage, but is extremely vulnerable to One-Hit Kill spells and status ailments.
    • Hiro, the game's main protagonist, is immune to instant-death effects and status ailments that can cripple other party members.
    • Evulz is the only enemy that's vulnerable to instant-death effects and status ailments.
    • During the final boss, Hiro suddenly gains magic from the Power of Friendship and becomes immune to almost everything Evulz has.
  • Subverted: Hiro casts petrification on Evulz… And it works!
  • Double Subverted: Then the statue animates, and it turns out Hiro just made him even stronger.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: Evulz is immune to the standard status effects due to being a lich, but as Revive Kills Zombie, even the normal cure-alls make him weak and feeble.
  • Averted:
    • There are no status effects or One Hit Kills to be immune to in the first place.
    • The Instant-Death/Status effect spell works fine on everything.
  • Enforced:
    • The developers don’t want the players to skip the boss-fight they worked so hard on.
    • Evulz is coded to either be That One Boss or a Wake-Up Call Boss, designed to force the player to properly learn the mechanics.
    • Evulz is a Super Boss.
  • Lampshaded:
    • "Instant-Death? PAH! Like that’ll work!”
    • “Curse your inexplicable resilience!”
    • “Should we even bother with the status effect spells? Bosses just don't seem to care.”
  • Invoked: Evulz seeks out various potions to make him have these immunities.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: Bob steals Evulz's amulet of resist status ailment in the middle of battle so that Alice can petrify him.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "You didn't think something like that would work on someone like me did you? I'm in a caliber of power you cannot possibly comprehend!"
  • Deconstructed: As no one important is vulnerable to the spells, no one bothers to learn them and they become a lost art. Eventually the need for immunity fades and the whole issue is forgotten.
  • Reconstructed: The lost art of the instant-death spell is rediscovered and causes major trouble, with ruling figures and legendary warriors being murdered left and right by a lesser mage apprentice with an old spellbook. A large part of why Evulz came into power is due to the natural immunity he possessed, which allows him to thrive in this otherwise deathly environment.
