Playing With / Cannot Tell a Lie

Go To

Basic Trope: A character is incapable of lying and can only speak the truth.

  • Straight: Alice is unable to lie and as a result, she always tells the truth.
  • Exaggerated: It is not only impossible for Alice to tell a lie, but she is also incapable of misleading others, even using Metaphorically True statements or withholding information.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
    • Alice has been so strongly raised to have an honest sense of character that truth-telling is just in her nature.
    • Alice has a developmental disorder that keeps her from seeing things abstractly, which makes up a big part of lying.
  • Inverted: Alice is a pathological liar that is unable to tell the truth.
  • Subverted: Alice was only under the effects of a Truth Serum.
  • Double Subverted: Yet, even after the effects of the serum wear off, she still seems to never lie.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zigzagged: Alice goes through phases in which she cannot lie, but then she totally can, only to involuntarily go back to lying, and so forth.
  • Averted: Alice is as perfectly capable of lying as she is of truth-telling.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Alice has to be the most honest person I know. Is it even possible for her to lie?"
  • Invoked: Alice makes a vow to always tell the truth.
  • Exploited:
    • Bob is trying to get information from someone who Loves Secrecy, and simply asks Alice if she knows what they are hiding. The worst she can say is no, after all.
    • Alice cultivates this reputation so that when she does lie, she's less likely to be found out.
  • Defied: There are times where lying can be beneficial, and Alice knows this.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • Brutal Honesty
    • Being honest about everything means being honest about bad things as well.
    • Alice is a Secret Secret-Keeper, but her inability to lie causes her to give away this secret.
    • The villains use Alice to get information on the heroes, including their weaknesses and other things they really don't want him to know.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Everyone still appreciates Alice's honesty, even if it's a little blunt.
    • Alice is not a bad person, so that doesn't matter much.
    • Alice is a Wild Card. Her "betrayal" of the heroes is just what she does.
