Basic Trope: A virgin woman's first time having sex results in mild bleeding.

  • Straight: Alice has sex for the first time, and it results in a small bloodstain on the bedsheets.
  • Exaggerated: ???
  • Downplayed: By way of Rule of Symbolism or Visual Innuendo, the imagery of bleeding is used to denote the loss of virginity without directly referencing a sexual act.
  • Justified: Alice is shown to be anxious and tense, and not turned on enough, and she gets slightly hurt.
  • Inverted: Alice does not bleed the first time she has sex, but does bleed subsequent times.
  • Gender-Inverted: Alice and Bob have sex for the first time, and Bob bleeds.note
  • Subverted: Alice and Bob are about to have sex together for the first time. There's a Sexy Discretion Shot, and in the next scene Alice is stripping a blood-stained sheet off the bed. Then Bob comes in, hands Alice a tampon, and the two have a brief dialogue about how her period just started, mid-coitus.
  • Double Subverted: Alice leaves the laundry to Bob and goes to the bathroom to clean herself up. She throws the tampon away, takes a painkiller from the medicine cabinet, then pulls out her phone to google "how long does the bleeding after your first time last?" She actually was a virgin, but she lied to Bob about it due to Virgin-Shaming.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: Some female characters in the work bleed their first time, while others don't, with no apparent rhyme or reason to it.
  • Averted:
    • It's a very chaste work and sex is never a topic.
    • The sex is all Idealized Sex, free of any blood or pain.
    • Alice is not a virgin, or her virginity or lack thereof is never established, and doesn't bleed during her sex scenes.
  • Implied: Alice and Bob have their first time via shower sex. There's a moment where Alice says it hurts, but if there ever was any blood, it was washed away before either party could get a good look.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Consummation Counterfeit
  • Exploited: Alice and Bob are royals in an Altar Diplomacy marriage. When Alice bleeds on the sheet on their wedding night, the sheet is presented to the court so that everyone knows Alice was a virgin up until now, and that the marriage has been consummated. This puts antagonistic whispering to rest: Alice is above reproach. Now that the marriage has been consummated, before too long there should be a baby to strengthen the alliance even further.
  • Defied: Alice is nervous about her first time and decides bleeding is an additional complication she doesn't want to worry about. Through masturbating, she makes sure any bleeding that will happen has already happened.
  • Discussed: Alice is anticipating her first time and trying to gauge what to expect. She talks to her more sexually experienced friend Charlotte.
Alice: Do you really bleed your first time?
Charlotte: What, like in anime? No.
  • Conversed: Dina goes on a diatribe disparaging the trope — which she calls a Romance Novel Trope — as inaccurate.
  • Played for Drama: Alice's old-fashioned father discovers the bloodstains on her sheets while changing them later and forces her and Bob into an unwanted Shotgun Wedding as a consequence.
  • Played for Horror: Alice is a hemophiliac. She and Bob have sex for the first time and she bleeds — and the bleeding won't stop. Bob is horrified that he hurt her like this, and guilt-stricken that he didn't have the foresight to realize this might happen, given her condition.
  • Played for Laughs: After losing her virginity with Bob, Alice glances between her legs under the sheets and then makes an afterglow-fueled wisecrack about needing to strip the bed tomorrow morning, to mutual hilarity.
