Basic Trope: A character commits suicide to avoid a bad fate.
- Straight: Alice, seeing she will be captured by her enemies, swallows poison.
- Exaggerated: Every single character dies this way. Some are several times.
- Downplayed: Alice swallows non-lethal dose to ensure she will be put not in prison, but in hospital, hoping escape will be easier that way.
- Justified:
- Alice suspects she will be given Fate Worse than Death if she is caught.
- Alice has some important information she doesn't want a risk of giving away during torture.
- In a situation where the options are painful death at the hands of the Posse by gunfire barrage, No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, torture or noose and less painful death by poison, Alice decides she will have some control over the way she dies.
- Inverted: Alice has two ways to die, get her throat slit, or willfully drown herself, she chooses the former.
- Subverted: Alice takes poison... which puts her into death-like state for a few hours, without killing her.
- Double Subverted: ...Without killing her right away.
- Parodied: Alice swallows several poisons and they cancel each other out. She shoots herself and misses. She jumps out of the window, but this window was at floor height she it fails too.
- Zig-Zagged: Alice swallows sleeping potion, which makes her look dead. When she awakens, she is in the prison morgue and she tries to find a weapon to take her life. Some time later it is discovered she had been resurrected and she faces this problem again.
- Averted: Alice lets herself be captured, assuming that as long as she is alive and her captors want her that way she has a chance to escape.
- Enforced: The writers want the story to become a tragedy, and Alice committing suicide is a sure-fire way to do it. They then decide to give her a reason to do it that makes a bit more sense than just her becoming insane.
- Lampshaded: "I'm gonna die either way, so I guess I'll just choose this."
