Basic Trope: A country is divided into smaller countries, usually found in Alternate History or 20 Minutes into the Future works.

  • Straight: The Republic of Tropestan, after a Velvet Revolution, is divided into the Federation of Avertonia, the Kingdom of Exaggeratia, and the small Subversion Union.
  • Exaggerated:
    • The Republic of Tropetan, after a Velvet Revolution, is divided into 321,105 recognized nations.
    • EVERY country on Earth has stuffed this. Even ones as small as Vatican City.
  • Downplayed:
    • The Republic of Tropestan is split into North Tropestan and South Tropestan.
    • The Republic of Tropestan, while still considered a single country in matters such as foreign relations, goes from a unitary top-down state to a significantly more decentralized confederation with the several autonomous regions wielding significant power over things like taxes.
  • Justified: Different political factions have different policies, but don't want open war, so they decide to peacefully distribute the land.
  • Inverted: Space-Filling Empire
  • Subverted: The Republic of Tropestan appears to become divided in a Civil War, but the government wins and they're soon united again.
  • Double Subverted: But La RĂ©sistance won't give up so easily, and break off regions to create independent republics.
  • Parodied:
    • Every home in Tropestan becomes a new nation.
    • Secessions are so frequent the local Tropians use the latest batch as a conversation starter like the weather.
    • Tropestan consisted of thirty houses, and broke into ten groups of three. This is treated with the seriousness of a full nation state, and each group estsblishes a full government with constitution.
  • Zig Zagged: Tropestan breaks into smaller nations and unites again over and over.
    • Tropestan and their southern neighbor Someotherstan split up into smaller states but both later converge to two nations of similiar size but divided vastly differently.
  • Averted: The Republic of Tropestan stays whole after the Velvet Revolution.
  • Enforced: The author wants a more emotional war story of brothers fighting brothers.
  • Lampshaded: "It sure was better when there wasn't a big damn wall dividing our country. Damn separatists!"
  • Invoked: The Empire of Someotherstan seeds insurgents with different motives to split Tropestan into multiple warring nations, making them easy to invade and conquer.
  • Exploited: The Empire of Someotherstan does just that.
  • Defied: But the people of Troperia band together to fight the bigger threat.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Multiple nations fighting for the same territory over and over eventually destroys the land, meaning they are fighting for nothing but dirt. This eventually makes them prey for other, malevolent nations that eventually conquer the former Republic of Tropestan, turning their struggle in vain.
  • Reconstructed: It's one thing to conquer the former Republic of Tropestan - governing it is a whole other thing. Whether it is Examplestan trying to invest and incorporate the land as a part of itself or Someotherstan trying to ruthlessly exploit the land by displacing the native Tropians and inflicting major unrest in the rest of its territory, the expenditure and strain tax the conquerers' governance beyond the breaking point and they end up splitting into multiple countries.
