Basic Trope Description: A character who is officially buried in a funeral attends it.
- Straight: Alice is presumed dead and shall be buried, but she walks in alive in the middle of her funeral service.
- Exaggerated: A whole city is presumed to be dead. The dead shall be buried now, but they all come in during the funeral ceremony.
- Downplayed:
- Alice is buried in a state funeral, but is in fact alive and watching it far away on TV.
- Alice is Not Quite Dead and wakes up in the midst of her funeral.
- Justified:
- Alice came Back from the Dead.
- Alice faked her death and wants to reunite with her friends now.
- Alice is a time traveler.
- Alice was travelling the world for quite a time, and everyone believed her to be dead due to the time that passed by.
- Inverted: Alice comes Back from the Dead during her funeral and leaves her coffin and the funeral ceremony itself after that.
- Subverted:
- During Alice's funeral ceremony, a woman looking like Alice comes in...but she is only Alice's identical twin sister.
- We see Alice, who just faked her death, attend a funeral. But it is someone else's.
- Double Subverted:
- Who saw her ghost and followed her there.
- Alice really died during her attempt to only fake her death and hasn't realized yet.
- Enforced: "Our watchers need to understand that Alice isn't really dead before the characters. How do we show it?" "Make Alice appear in the back of the room in the funeral scene?" "Great!"
- Averted:
- Alice doesn't die.
- Alice is presumed dead, but doesn't appear at her funeral.
- Zig-zagged: Someone sneaks in at Alice's funeral. Bob says to Charlie that this person looks like Alice, but Charlie doesn't believe it. Later, Bob tries to prove that Alice came herself, but the woman is in fact Alice's twin sister. Who had seen Alice on the street before and saw her walking there...
- Parodied: Alice is open about who she is and gives her own eulogy. Nobody recognizes her.
- Invoked: Alice plans to show up again at her funeral to make it a perfect surprise for her friends.
- Exploited:
- Dracone recognizes Alice at her funeral and blackmails her with her secret of being still alive.
- Alice put the funeral out as a distraction to set the last part of her plan in motion - while she is in fact there, and very much alive.
- Defied: Alice waits for the end of her funeral to reunite with her group.
- Lampshaded: "And here I am again! Can I please give my own eulogy now?"
- Discussed: "And then, she sneaked in." "Alice?" "Yes, all that for nothing."
- Conversed: "Well, at least Alice knows now how it will be at her funeral."
