Go To

Basic Trope: A character glances away as though to the audience.

  • Straight: When Alice says that This Is Reality, Bob glances towards the audience as though he has Medium Awareness. Alice doesn't notice.
  • Exaggerated: Bob doesn't just glance, he turns his head fully towards the screen.
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob looks without turning his head.
    • As some people do in real life, Bob gives a brief glance upwards.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: The characters are usually looking at the screen, but when Alice begins Breaking the Fourth Wall, Bob looks away from the screen.
  • Subverted: The screen then points to Bob's dog who was what Bob was glancing at.
  • Double Subverted: The dog then glances toward the audience.
  • Parodied: Bob tries to turn his head towards the audience, but because he doesn't know where exactly the Fourth Wall is, he keeps failing.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob's eyes wander toward the audience and random objects and characters.
  • Averted: Nobody glances away.
  • Enforced: The writers made Bob a Fourth-Wall Observer.
  • Lampshaded: "Hey! Stop staring at the audience like that, Bob! They get nervous when you do that."
  • Invoked: Someone offscreen puts something for Bob to look at, that's in our direction.
  • Exploited: Not applicable. When played straight, nobody is supposed to notice that Bob glanced away.
  • Defied: Bob has Medium Awareness, but refuses to look at the screen.
  • Discussed: Not applicable. When played straight, nobody acknowledges it.
  • Conversed: "Why is Bob looking at me? Does he know I'm watching the film?"
  • Implied: Bob is seen looking toward the audience but Word of God hasn't confirmed or denied that he actually has Medium Awareness.
  • Played For Laughs: Bob looking at the audience is the "can you believe this?" reaction to an absurd moment.
  • Played For Drama: Bob looking at the audience is a "You Bastard!" moment.
Alternatively, he is stabbed by Alice, and with his dying breath, he looks at the camera.
