Playing With / Ash Face

Go To

  • Straight: Peter is handling dynamite, and it explodes on his face leaving his face covered with black ash.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Peter gets a close up of a crate of TNT and it explodes, and his entire head disintegrates. However, he survives and a new head just pops up to replace the old one.
    • Peter tries to eat a bomb in one bite and explodes, covering him completely head to toe in a layer of pitch black soot. He slaps himself twice to get all of it off two seconds later
  • Downplayed: The bomb only gives Peter a sunburn.
  • Justified: Peter is a cartoon character, so surviving gags like this is expected.
  • Inverted:
    • Peter's face gets covered in white powder.
    • Everything except his face gets covered in soot.
    • Peter's sorroundings get covered in soot, but peter is untouched.
  • Subverted: On a Black Comedy adult cartoon, this appears to happen at first, but on closer inspection, the blackness isn't ash, it's third-degree burns! And, for that matter, his head is now twenty feet from his body...
  • Double Subverted: Peter's chargrilled & disembodied head manages to croak out a pained "little help?" and, once his friends piece him back together, he just needs to shake himself vigorously and he's as good as new.
  • Parodied:
    • After the explosion, Peter's face looks like a slice of toast. He takes out a butter knife, scrapes off the black over a nearby sink, and turns a dial on the next bomb down to "3".
    • Peter calls his friends to hold a "Soot-Face Contest" to see how much ash they can get on their faces from staring at lit bombs.
    • Peter gets an ash face every time he suffers an injury, ranging from stuff like getting hit by a car, shot or stabbed, to ridiculous stuff like stubbing his toe, or being sent through the mail.
  • Averted: Peter never gets caught in an explosion, or if he does, gory results.
  • Enforced:
    • The writers want to make this a recurring gag.
    • This is a children's show, we can't have people getting blown up!
  • Invoked: In a point-and-click adventure game that runs on cartoon logic, the player needs to use a Cartoon Bomb at just the right moment to get a rival character unfairly accused of playing in Blackface.
  • Defied: Rita is about to throw a bomb at Peter, but stops. "All this will do is burn off his eyebrows, better Just Shoot Him."
  • Lampshaded: Peter: "I thought explosions were lethal, but apparently not."
  • Played For Horror: That pound of C4 was our heroes' last remaining hope against the Monster Clown terrorising them. The fact that all it does is mess up his greasepaint is terrifying.
