Playing With / Ascended Demon

Go To

Basic Trope: A demon who becomes a heroic, angelic/holy being.

  • Straight: Bob starts as a demon but later manages to overcome his nature and becomes an angel.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is the King of Darkness who later becomes the leader of the Light Warriors.
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob never stops being a demon, but he changes his ways and turns a less evil one.
    • Bob is no longer a demon but becomes a nature spirit, no longer being unholy or evil but different in standards and not exactly holy either.
  • Justified: In Bob's universe, demons and angels are the same thing and their distinctive natures are only due to their personal minds.
  • Inverted:
    • Fallen Angel.
    • Bob transforms into angel/ascended demon hybrid after his ascension, but after that his Angelic half became fallen and return to hell.
  • Subverted: Bob is a demon who becomes a heroic angelic being, but later turns out that demons cannot change their true natures and he helplessly returns to his demon state.
  • Double Subverted: ...however, thanks to the experience, Bob decides to make the best of his demonic nature and dedicates his life to fight evil just like angels do.
  • Parodied: Bob is a bumbling demon who tries to be an angel and obviously isn't suited to be it.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob is a demon who starts to change his ways about good and evil after fighting the angel Alice. He succesfully becomes an angel, only to find that meanwhile Alice has fallen and become a demon. He goes to great extents to bring her again to the lightside, but all his attempts fail. His heartbreak is too much to him to take and it causes him to become a demon again, which simultaneously makes Alice regain her mind and her angelic status. Bob declares war to the Light Warriors, with Alice constantly trying to make him return to her side. Eventually, the war makes Bob hate his demon nature, but the former experience make him wonder if he can really be an angel.
  • Averted:
  • Enforced: "This is a work about the importance of fighting for being who you can be, so we have to put an Ascended Demon".
  • Lampshaded: "No sin is beyond redemption. There is always hope... even for a demon".
  • Invoked: Charles the Chaos Spirit influences Bob to make him want to join the Light Warriors, as he wants to demonstrate that angel and demon are just words and that the universe is too chaotic for any kind of difference.
  • Exploited: Knowing Bob wants to abandon his race and join the Light Warriors, Satan secretly allows him to do so in order to later corrupt him and make him betray them.
  • Defied: Though given the opportunity to being an angel, Bob decides to be himself and stays a demon.
  • Discussed:
Satan: Foolish Bob thinks he can leave behind his nature. He is a puppet on my hands. UWAH-HAH-HAH-HA!
Charles: Do you believe that? Nature is beyond gods and demons. All the beings are free to follow their own ways.
Satan: Don't try to confuse me, you squishy monster. At the end, he will fulfill his fate and my victory will be total.
Charles: There is no fate. The young demon will not betray the people he love.
  • Conversed: "Bob behaves strangely since he returned from that battle against those stinky angels, doesn't? Man, I hope he will not decide to leave our side, it would be a bore having to kill him."
  • Deconstructed: Bob becomes an angel and joins the Light Warriors, but the process is painful and most of them don't trust him due to his past. This makes him doubt and he wonders if he did right and if really there is hope for him.
  • Reconstructed: ...At the end, however, Bob manages to undo his curse and helps them to defeat Satan, which earns their trust and establishes him as a member of the heavenly group. He marries Alice and makes an heroic biography for himself as a Light Warrior.
  • Played For Laughs: The demon Bob becomes an angel, but though he is now a solid good guy, he retains the mindset of a demon and always proposes the most brutal and bloodthirsty solutions to any problem as if were angelic things.
  • Played For Drama: Due to his change of mind about good and evil after meeting the angel Alice, Bob starts to slowly become an angel without wanting it, which forces him to accept that he has to abandon his life as a demon for another which will be clearly hard to achieve.
