Basic Trope: Kissing someone other than the lips is important, usually because it's to make the kiss less or more intimate.
- Straight: Alice doesn't like to kiss on the first date, so she gives Bob a smooch on the cheek to show she's looking forward to more dates.
- Exaggerated: Alice smothers Bob's face with kisses, so just about everywhere but the lips have lipstick on them.
- Downplayed: Alice doesn't mention her habit of avoiding kissing on the lips, but pecks Bob on the cheek at the end of the date.
- Justified:
- Alice's religion isn't against intimacy, but does encourage not rushing into relationships.
- One or both characters find the concept of tongue-kissing disgusting and/or bizarre.
- Inverted: Alice doesn't kiss Bob anywhere else.
- Subverted: Alice is about to kiss Bob's cheek, but then she grabs his face to plant one on the lips.
- Double Subverted: But before their lips touch, the camera pans up.
- Parodied:
- Alice uses tongue when kissing Bob's cheek.
- Alice and Bob have a special code for where they kiss each other, even when they kiss the other's chest during sex.
- Zig Zagged: Alice kisses somewhere other than the lips, at first, but then does kiss the lips, but then continues kissing the cheeks, etc, as well as the lips.
- Averted: Kissing on the lips.
- Enforced: This is Product Placement for smear proof lipstick, so Alice kisses Bob on the cheek, clearly showing no lipstick left.
- Lampshaded: When Alice finally does kiss the lips, she jokes that she hopes it was worth the wait.
- Invoked: Alice is told, by her strict religious guardian, not to go around "kissing any lips you can find", so she promises not to... and kisses everywhere else, instead.
- Exploited: Bob works out that the woman pretending to be Alice is an imposter, because he asked her to kiss him, and he kissed him on his lips, which Alice wouldn't do yet.
- Defied: Alice pulls up her coat collar against her cheeks, hinting that she doesn't want Bob not to kiss her lips.
- Discussed: Alice tells Bob about why she doesn't kiss him on the lips, yet.
- Conversed: Alice and Bob talk about whether kissing on the lips is more romantic or sexual than other kisses.
- Played For Horror: Alice is an alien, and kissing her on the lips breaks the illusion. So she insists Bob not kiss her there. One night he breaks that promise, and is terrified to see a Starfish Alien in his arms.
