Basic Trope: A gameplay mechanic designed to prevent or penalize players for hoarding certain resources, items, pieces of equipment, etc.

  • Straight: In Tales of Troperia XIV, the party can only carry two Health Potions per recruited member.
  • Exaggerated: The party can only carry a single potion.
    • Acquiring a third potion is instantly lethal.
  • Downplayed: The party can only carry 10 potions per member.
  • Justified: Health Potions come in large bottles, making it impractical to carry more than two while still being able to fight effectively.
  • Inverted: Each party member must carry at least two potions.
  • Subverted: There is no limit on carrying potions and the more you carry, the more stat bonuses your party gets, encouraging you to carry as many as you can.
  • Double Subverted: ...all of your potions are stolen during a No Equipment Level and the boss at the end will use them against you. The more you were carrying, the tougher the boss is.
  • Parodied: If you pick up a third potion, a giant hand reaches down from they sky and takes it away from you.
  • Zig-Zagged: You can initially only carry two potions per party member, but you can purchase upgraded bags which allow you to carry more. However, there is an encumbrance limit which does not increase, meaning the extra potions take up space that could go to other, even more useful items.
  • Averted: You can carry as many of any inventory item as you want.
  • Enforced: The game is an MMO and the number of potions available in the game world is carefully controlled for balance purposes. The limit prevents players from hoarding them and keeping them away from others.
  • Lampshaded: When picking up a third potion, party member Quirby sarcastically quips "man, this would really help on our adventure, too bad I have to leave it behind..."
  • Exploited: The potions are added to a hidden safe in the game that only the developers have access to.
  • Defied: The party members only make two potions for each member.
  • Discussed: "You may only carry two potions at a time"
  • Conversed: "Ain't it weird that you can only have two potions at once in Tales of Troperia XIV?"
  • Deconstructed: ??
  • Reconstructed: ??
  • Played for Laughs: The characters can only carry 69 potions at a time
  • Played for Drama: When Alice is nearly dying, Bob tries to save her. However, two health potions aren't enough to heal her.
