Basic Trope: Angels are portrayed as eldritch abominations.
- Straight: Angelos the angel is a bizarre, alien being that looks like some sort of monster, being comprised of multiple halos covered in eyes, several pairs of gargantuan rings, and a whole lot of holy symbolism on it.
- Exaggerated: Angelos is an extra-dimensional entity that can't be comprehended that causes whoever witnesses it to go mad or straight up die.
- Downplayed: Angelos has a recognizably human or animal-like appearance, but there's clearly something off and he has Lovecraftian Superpowers.
- Justified:
- Angels live in a higher plane of existence, so their biology is weird. Humanity is on a lower plane, so angels come off as bizarre to them.
- God is such an Eldritch Abomination that He needs angels to be lesser abominations in order to endure being near Him.
- Inverted:
- Demonica the demon is a bizarre, alien being that looks like some sort of monster
- Humans are Lovecraftian monsters by angel standards.
- Angelic Beauty
- Demonica is Hot as Hell.
- Subverted: Angelos reveals that the bizarre monstrous appearance is just glamour or a One-Winged Angel form he takes to intimidate others. He looks like a regular Winged Humanoid otherwise.
- Double Subverted: ...turns out Angelos is a low-ranking angel. Archangelos and his kin are just as terrifyingly bizarre as Angelos' fake form, if not more so.
- Parodied: Angelos is self-conscious about how religious humans freak out from his Eldritch Abomination appearance.
- Averted: Angels take standard forms like humanoids, angels, or spirits.
- Enforced:
- "The Winged Humanoid appearance is an angel cliche at this point. Let's show these holy beings as something you'd be spooked by".
- This actually is what the angels were described as in The Bible, so the creators are basically trying to stay Truer to the Text.
- Lampshaded: "If this is what God has working for Him, I'd hate to see the other guy's minions".
- Invoked: Angels show up as Lovecraftian to show that true beauty is from within and not to judge a book by its cover, even with monstrous-looking beings.
- Exploited: Satan tries to scare away people from God by showing how spooky His angels' look like
- Implied: Angelos appears as a Winged Humanoid, but mentions that this is "A Form You Are Comfortable With".
- Played For Laughs: The appearance of Lovecraftian angels causes the souls in Heaven to panic and run screaming, even when the angels mean no harm and just want to talk with them.
- Played For Horror: Angels aren't just Lovecraftian in appearance, but attitude. They're part of a Cosmic Horror Story with the forces of Heaven as monsters and the forces of Hell as tormentors.
- Deconstructed: The angels are too Lovecraftian for humanity to deal with and drive humans away, despite being benevolent.
- Reconstructed: Because of how Lovecraftian the angels are, they're able to fight off evil eldritch abominations and aid humanity's fight against them.
