Go To

Basic Trope: An Afrikaner who is evil. Likely a mercenary and a racist.

  • Straight: Pieter is a racist, greedy, mercenary thug from Cape Town.
  • Exaggerated: Afrikaners are portrayed as Always Chaotic Evil.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
    • These do exist in real life.
    • Pieter grew up in apartheid South Africa and never abandoned his racist attitude.
  • Inverted:
    • Pieter the Afrikaner is the most heroic character in the story.
    • Pieter is a North African, but he's still a racist, greedy, mercenary thug.
  • Subverted: Pieter is creepy and has an off-putting attitude but he is actually a good guy.
  • Double Subverted: Or so it seems. Eventually he turns on the heroes.
  • Parodied: Pieter van Zebushooter sleeps with a Vektor R1 under his pillow, refuses to do anything unless paid in gold krugerrands, and Screams Like a Little Girl when he sees a North African person.
  • Zig Zagged: Pieter is racist, but on the side of good, but only for the money, but he was lying, but...
  • Averted: All Afrikaners are neutral characters at worst.
  • Enforced:
    • The author is a fellow South African who had to deal with this sort of person.
    • The author is an Afrikaner themself and wants to call out the bad ones.
    • The executives want Arnold Vosloo to play the Big Bad. The writers add a mention of the villain being from South Africa because Vosloo was born there, knowing the members of the target audience will fill in the blanks.
  • Lampshaded: "Wow. Never trust an Afrikaner."
  • Invoked: Evulz sets up shop in South Africa to drive Afrikaners into evil.
  • Exploited: Evulz only hires Afrikaners because he knows they often have no moral compass.
  • Defied: A humanitarian organization goes to South Africa to drive Afrikaners onto better paths.
  • Discussed: "The guy's a South African, he's probably the bad guy."
  • Conversed: "Why is it that every South African in fiction is a horrible person?"
  • Implied:
    • Pieter makes several racist comments, but his alignment is unclear.
    • Pieter is an assassin whose ethnicity is not explicitly stated, but his accent suggests he's an Afrikaner.
  • Deconstructed: Innocent Afrikaners are profiled and assumed to be evil because of people like Pieter.
  • Reconstructed: The hero is also an Afrikaner, and refuses to let people stereotype them.
  • Played For Laughs: Pieter always wanted to be a hairdresser, but his father insisted he become a Private Military Contractor because it's "his heritage". He decides to use his skills to form the most fabulous PMC in the world.
  • Played For Drama: Pieter's son also joins the Family Business, but thinks his father is too soft and instead embraces the South African Sociopathic Soldier stereotype. Eventually, Pieter Jr. starts his own company, tearing both the unit and the family apart.
  • Played For Horror: Pieter is a sadistic and racist Afrikaner who gains control of South Africa's government (either through votes or violence) and brings back Apartheid...but worse. He gains enough of a following from his fellow Amoral Afrikaners that genocide of the black African population is on the table.
