Basic Trope: A villainess's song is in the alto range.
- Straight: Alice is an alto, and is the evil antagonist to Sophie's soprano.
- Exaggerated: Alice hits very low notes, past what a female singer can normally achieve, to show that she's evil.
- Downplayed: Alice is a jerk, but not a villain. Her songs are still in the alto range, however.
- Justified: Alice's Start of Darkness involves an injury to her vocal chords that deepened her voice.
- Inverted: Alice is the good alto heroine, Sophie is the evil soprano villain.
- Subverted: Alice pulls a Heel–Face Turn before the second act.
- Double Subverted:
- ...But then she pulls a Face–Heel Turn near the end.
- ...But another alto villainess, Aline, shows up to replace her.
- Parodied: Sophie pulls a Face–Heel Turn, and her voice automatically deepens. All her subsequent songs are in the alto range.
- Zig Zagged:
- Alice goes through the Heel–Face Revolving Door several times over the course of the show.
- There are several female villains of varying voice types; some are altos.
- Averted: Voice types don't indicate any female character's villainy.
- Enforced: "We need an easy way to show that Alice is evil, so we're going to make her an alto to contrast with the good Sophie. Besides, Evil Sounds Deep anyway."
- Lampshaded: "No one with notes that low can be good."
- Invoked:
- When infiltrating the villains' lair, the heroes send an alto.
- Alice sings into a pitch modulator.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: ???
- Discussed: "If we were in a musical, Alice would be the villain. It's her voice."
- Conversed: "Hey, are you watching that musical? Is she supposed to be a villain?" "How'd you know?" "She's an alto, those are always evil."
