Playing With / All Work vs. All Play

Go To

Basic Trope: One character is focused on work while the other wants to have fun.

  • Straight: Fred is focused on working while Kyle loves to relax and have fun.
  • Exaggerated: Fred has dedicated his entire life in working to the point of shunning even the smallest form of luxury while Kyle is a Lazy Bum and The Hedonist who enjoys fun and shuns anything involving work.
  • Downplayed:
    • Fred and Kyle are work-oriented, but Fred is always more focused on work than Kyle is.
    • Fred and Kyle love to have fun, but Kyle is more relaxed than Fred.
    • Fred is Work Hard, Play Hard and Kyle is All Play.
    • Fred is All Work and Kyle is Work Hard, Play Hard.
  • Justified: Fred was raised by parents who train him to work hard and not focus on the luxuries of life while Kyle isn't used to hard work and finds it a hindrance of enjoying life.
  • Inverted: There is no inversion.
  • Subverted: Fred is revealed to hate working a lot and wants to have fun while Kyle actually doesn't mind working.
  • Double Subverted: Fred then reminds himself that work is more important than having fun, while Kyle begins to hate working and slacks off.
  • Parodied: If Fred attempts to have fun, reality starts to break down. Same for Kyle if he attempts to focus on working.
  • Zig Zagged: Fred and Kyle respectively relax and work depending on the episode.
  • Averted: Both Fred and Kyle either focus on working and playing.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Well if it isn't Fred and Kyle. One loves to work and the other loves to goof off."
  • Invoked:
    • Fred is annoyed with Kyle's fun-loving attitude and decides to act like a hard worker to keep him from bugging him.
    • Kyle is annoyed with Fred's harping about hard work and tries to ignore him by relaxing.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Fred wants to work, but realises that working hard with no break will impact on his performance. Kyle wants to have fun, but realises that if he doesn't work he won't have the money to fund his party lifestyle. Therefore, both decide to balance the amount of work and play in their lives.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • The workhorse Fred and luxurious Kyle can't coexist because of their contrasting personalities.
    • Fred being focused on work made it impossible for him to enjoy the luxuries he's earned and he also alienated others who encourage him to have more fun while Kyle being too focused on fun made it impossible for him to succeed in life and he has alienated others who encourage him to become more productive.
    • Fred turns out to have a Work Hard, Play Hard lifestyle; not only does he work hard, he also has an active lifestyle in his free time. Meanwhile, a look at Kyle's free time show that he's not only lazy at work, he also lounges around during his time off.
  • Reconstructed: Fred and Kyle eventually learn from each other, with the former learning to enjoy the things he never got the chance to and Kyle learning to find the fun in working.
