Playing With / All Asians Know Martial Arts

Go To

Basic Trope: Every character of Asian descent is a skilled martial artist.

  • Straight:
  • Exaggerated: All Asians around the world, no matter their age or ethnicity have the skills of a champion martial artist, retired or not.
  • Downplayed:
    • Mei does know Kung Fu but is not an expert.
    • Ryuichi is just a mere blue belt in karate.
    • Dae-Hyun is a Korean boxer. He doesn't know any Eastern martial arts, but his speed and technique manages to make him a prominent boxer.
  • Justified:
    • Mei has been training in Kung Fu since childhood.
    • Ryuichi's parents enrolled him in a karate dojo at 8.
  • Inverted:
    • Every character is a skilled martial artist, except the Asian ones.
    • Asian characters (particularly the Japanese Ryuichi) are Combat Pragmatists and heavily rely on Good Old Fisticuffs to get the job done.
  • Subverted: Mei does not have any skill in martial arts.
  • Double Subverted: That is, in Eastern martial arts. She's a skilled HEMA fighter.
  • Parodied: The maternity ward in an Asian hospital is also a dojo.
  • Zig Zagged: Mei is a Kung Fu expert. Ryuichi has no martial arts training at all. However, Jose is a skilled Eskrima practicioner. On the other hand, Aat has some Muay Thai skill.
  • Averted: Not all Asian characters know martial arts.
  • Enforced: The Cast Show Off or Cast the Expert.
  • Lampshaded:
Bob: Hot damn! Nice moves, where'd you get them from?
    Ryuichi: Osaka.
    Mei: Canton.
    Bob: Should've known.
  • Invoked: The Governments of all Asian countries push a law that all Asians know how to defend themselves, and give out martial arts to help them.
  • Exploited: Ryuichi and Mei get hired as bodyguards.
  • Defied: Martial Arts schools all around the world (especially in Asia) get burnt to the ground and banned from being made ever again.
  • Discussed:
Bob: Hey, can you guys teach me some of those moves? I'd love to learn how to fight like that!
  • Conversed:
Alice: Ain't that a little racist? I mean, sure, it's probably Truth in Television, but a line's gotta be drawn SOMEWHERE!
  • Implied: Biff recounts tales to his kid Bob about how he went to Asia, and said that he Had to Be Sharp everywhere he walked, because once they're onto you, you're effectively screwed.
  • Deconstructed: In an Asian Dystopia, people are repressed from doing martial arts (and instead performing fake ones to keep up the act) in fear that they'll suffer something in vein of the Chinese Boxer's Rebellion.
  • Reconstructed: It still happens.
  • Played For Laughs: Chop Sockey for literally EVERYTHING.
  • Played For Drama: Ryuichi and Mei go to the same school, and due to their conflicting upbringings, personalities and cultures, harbor hatred for each other. This gets to the point where they are often seen duking it out in the yard, often being forcibly broken up before they could do any more damage.
