Basic Trope: An insult that has something to do with being adopted.

  • Straight: Alice tells Bob, her adopted cousin, "How can you say that?! You don't even have any real parents!"
  • Exaggerated: Alice does a long rant about how adopted people are useless nobodies.
  • Downplayed: Alice doesn't mean to make Bob feel bad but when she says, "You don't have real parents," he starts fretting about not knowing his birth parents.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is an immature kid.
    • Alice believes Bob's adoptive parents give him more attention than her biological parents give her, so she tries to make herself feel better by saying Bob's parents aren't "real".
  • Inverted: Alice is the one who's adopted and she was adopted by a couple who are very strict about celibacy, so she insults her cousin Bob by saying, "Your parents sinned to bring you into the world!"
  • Subverted: When Alice says that Bob doesn't have real parents, Bob asks her back, "Are you saying that because I'm adopted?" Alice replies that she was only saying that because her parents are nicer than his.
  • Double Subverted:
    • It turns out she only said that to get on Bob's good side.
    • When Bob reveals that his parents are actually very nice, Alice says, "Well, they're still not technically your real parents!"
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice says things that are sometimes Innocently Insensitive, sometimes less so, about Bob being adopted.
  • Averted: Alice does not insult Bob about being adopted.
  • Enforced: To set Alice up as being mean, while revealing that Bob is adopted.
  • Lampshaded: "Jeez, insulting me is one thing, but saying my parents aren't real?"
  • Invoked: Alice hates Bob and learns he was adopted and doesn't like to make that widely known, so she trolls him like this.
  • Exploited: Alice uses this tactic to try and find out if Bob really is adopted.
  • Defied: "Bob may be annoying sometimes, but I wouldn't stoop so low as to insult him for being adopted."
  • Discussed: "And then she insulted me, just 'cause I was adopted!"
  • Conversed: "I hate that character! She's always insulting her cousin just because he was adopted!"
  • Implied: We just hear Bob saying to Alice, "For your information, my parents are just as real as yours!"
  • Deconstructed: Bob isn't insulted at all. He replies to Alice: "Did you expect me to be insulted? Did you think I would cry about not having 'real' parents? You're so naïve. Why would I care about the parents who gave me up when the parents who took me in are so much better? My parents are the best. Getting adopted was the best thing that ever happened to me. And my adoptive parents specifically chose me. If they had a choice, would your parents have chosen you? I think not."
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: Alice tries to combine this with a Your Mom joke by saying, "Your mom's not your mom!" but Bob is just confused.
  • Played for Drama: Bob angsts about being adopted and/or ends up resenting Alice.
