Basic Trope: Abusing a store's return policy to get items for free for a period of time.

  • Straight: Logan buys a fancy $1000 suit from Mary's Clothing. He wears it to a fancy party for a day, then returns it the day after for a full refund.
  • Exaggerated: Logan buys an entire fancy outfit, costing $20000, and keeps it for a month, then returns it for all his money back.
  • Downplayed: Logan buys a new shirt and returns it the day after for half his money back.
  • Justified: Logan doesn't attend fancy occasions to necessitate needing a dedicated outfit for them. He figures that he can just buy one and then return it when he's done.
  • Inverted: Logan sells a suit for $1000 and then buys it back for the same price.
  • Subverted: After Logan has the suit for a day, he likes it and wants to wear it more often, so he doesn't return it.
  • Double Subverted: But then he buys a hat that he plans to return later.
  • Parodied: Logan, who lives in a decrepit hovel of a house, learns that his girlfriend is coming over to visit. He buys various services and pieces of furniture to make it seem fancy, but then returns them the instant she leaves.
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Logan buys a fancy suit and a new hat. He pays full price for the hat, but he only pays half price for the suit, which he plans to return anyways. But, he feels guilty and pays it off in full.
    • Logan buys a fancy suit with the intention to keep it. However, when the store has a sale the next day, he returns the suit to repurchase it at the sale price.
  • Averted: Logan does not abuse a store's return policy.
  • Enforced: The staff wanted to have an episode where the cast is dressed in fancy outfits, but realized that Logan wouldn't have the money for it. So they had him try to cheat a store to get it for free.
  • Lampshaded: "I've been wearing this suit for a day, now time to return it!"
  • Invoked: Logan reads about this tip on a website with (legally dubious) money-saving tips.
  • Exploited: This way, Logan can attend the fancy party,
  • Defied:
    • Mary's Clothing puts a large "do not remove" tag on their items, and refuses to refund any items that have it removed.
    • Mary's Clothing has an "All Sales Final" policy.
    • Mary's Clothing has a very complicated return policy which includes having to bring receipt, original packaging, product only replaced/refunded if it is a factory error (and all products are documented are in pristine condition/function before being allowed to leave the store), any attempts at fraud will be punished to the full extent of the law and refunds are store credit only, all of which is explained to the customer before and after they are charged. Logan decides it's too much of a hassle to try to swindle them.
  • Discussed: "You don't think Logan's just going to return his suit to the store once this party's over, do you?"
  • Conversed: "I bet stores in real life have something to prevent people from acting like Logan."
  • Deconstructed: The staff at Mary's Clothing catch on to Logan's attempt to steal from them, and he is punished with a fine.
  • Reconstructed: Logan learns about more ethical and legal places to rent stuff, and goes to them instead.
  • Implied: We only meet Logan at the party, and we've never seen him wear the suit before. He mumbles something about keeping receipts and return policies.
  • Played for Laughs: Logan has to avoid any possibility of his suit getting dirty while he's at the party, because he can't return it if it's ruined.
  • Played for Drama:
    • Logan's willingness to commit petty theft and his uncaring attitude to service workers shows how much of a Jerkass he is, and this harms his relationship with his girlfriend.
    • Anabelle Logan is an Obnoxious Entitled Housewife who thinks being the president of the Homeowners' Association grants her the power to abuse the store's return policy for half a million dollars worth of purchases and is willing to call the police and go to court over it, destroying the lives of everybody who works at Mary's Clothing.
  • Played for Horror: Being denied a refund, no matter how tiny or unrealistic, is enough reason for Marty Mayhem to terrorize and murder anybody with the tiniest connection to Mary's Clothing.
