Basic Trope: A character wakes up in an abandoned medical facility, often without knowing why it was abandoned.

  • Straight: Alice gets into a car crash and wakes up in an abandoned hospital.
  • Exaggerated: Everyone who isn't a doctor or nurse wakes up in an abandoned hospital.
  • Downplayed: Alice wakes up in a hospital that has only a fraction of its staff.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is somehow dangerous and the hospital was abandoned because she's in it.
    • Hospitals are known to become haunted after a long time in operation from the concentration of death and suffering. Sometimes patients forget they died and form ectoplasmic bodies and come wandering out.
    • Alice being unconscious at the hospital ends up saving her, as whatever caused the hospital to be abandoned ignored her while focusing on the still-living staff and other patients.
    • The monster lives in the hospital and stores its victims there for later killing.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice goes to sleep in an abandoned hospital during the apocalypse.
    • Alice wakes up in a hospital which was abandoned when she went to sleep but was restored to full functionality while she slept.
    • Alice wakes up in a crowded torture dungeon.
  • Subverted: Alice wakes up abandoned hospital with no memories. She was an urban explorer who concussed herself exploring abandoned buildings.
  • Double Subverted: Except that wasn't the abandoned building she was exploring before she saw something suspicious.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice wakes up in an abandoned hospital, but as she explores further, she discovers that it's actually a secret government facility that was made to look abandoned. However, she later realizes that it was intentionally made to look active to deceive anyone who might stumble upon it.
  • Parodied: Alice wakes up to find no one there, but a bouquet of flowers and a "sorry you woke up in an abandoned hospital" card are sitting on her bedside table.
  • Averted: No one awakens in an abandoned hospital.
  • Enforced: The trope is enforced by the writers to create a suspenseful and mysterious atmosphere in the story, where the abandoned hospital serves as a central setting.
  • Lampshaded:
Alice: As if it's not bad enough I'm in the hospital, no one else is.
Alice:"Great, another abandoned hospital scenario. Can't I wake up somewhere normal for once?
  • Invoked: Alice was dumped in the hospital after being given a memory blocker to leave her disoriented and less able to work out what happened.
  • Exploited: The monsters hang around hospitals, as people coming out of there tend to be bewildered, unarmed, and sometimes injured, making them easier prey.
  • Defied: Bob, the hospital administrator, insists that his staff stay to take care of the patients.
  • Discussed: Alice and her fellow survivors discuss the eerie phenomenon of waking up in abandoned hospitals and try to come up with theories about why it keeps happening.
  • Conversed: In an unrelated conversation, two characters discuss horror movie clichés, and one of them mentions the trope of waking up in an abandoned medical facility.
  • Deconstructed: Alice (and her lawyer) sue and strike it rich at the extreme neglect of the former owner who tried to cut expenses of underperforming hospitals too much.
  • Played for Drama: Alice wakes up in an abandoned hospital, but while there's no signs of human life, there's sure as hell signs of bacterial life, and Alice promptly catches an awful disease.
