  • In 101 Dalmatian Street, Doug and Delilah's puppies are litters from previous marriages, as well as adopting several more. Dylan is the oldest from Delilah's side and Dolly is the oldest from Doug's side. It does not seem to be a problem as all the Pups get on really well with both parents and its clear that both Delilah & Doug love each and every Pup deeply as well. The only possible exception is that Dawkins always refers to Doug by name, rather than as Dad; and even then, Dawkins is still shown to have a good relationship with Doug.
  • The Amazing World of Gumball's episode, "The Man" features the grandmother, Jojo, dating Louie on her 63rd birthday. Her son, Richard, does not approve of this due to his suppressed issues with his biological father's abandonment, culminating in a "Man Off" instead of Louie's suggestion to have a calm, reasonable conversation. It ends with Richard finally breaking down about his father when Jojo brings it up and he admits that he was afraid that his mother would leave him for Louie, who reassures him and he accepts Louie as a Parental Substitute. However, "The Signature" makes it clear that Richard still does not want Louie as a stepfather when he announces he and Jojo are marrying (which they do out of necessity, though Richard gets his father back into his life after the latter has a change of heart).
  • One episode of The Weekenders concerned Tino's reaction to his mother dating — first trying to sabotage it, then finding out he actually likes the guy. In a later episode, his divorced dad comes by for dinner and the two of them comment on how awkward it is for him to have dinner with his ex-wife's boyfriend.
  • In Arthur, Buster's mother dated a man named Harry for a while who Buster really liked, but eventually they broke it off so she could pursue other interests. However, Buster and Harry were still shown hanging out after this.
  • The Dragon Prince: Callum's initial reaction to his mother's remarrying of Harrow is unknown but from what can be seen in flashbacks, Callum admired his stepfather at a young age.
  • Pepper Ann one-upped this by having the new squeeze of the mother actually be PA's teacher, who had a dislike for PA. It didn't last.
  • The Simpsons:
    • Comic Book Guy and Agnes Skinner dated for a time, made all the more awkward by the fact that CBG was younger than Seymour Skinner. It didn't appear to last past that episode.
    • Similarly, Luann Van Houten dated several men before getting back together with her ex-husband Kirk, and Milhouse generally liked all of the men she brought home (one was an American Gladiator). It seems Kirk had much less luck with the women he dated, and the only one we actually saw ended up stealing his car.
    • Edna Krabappel seems to be getting along well with her new stepsons Rod and Todd Flanders and intervenes with genuine concern when she believes that Ned's insistence on a Christian curriculum for the boys is actually doing them harm. The only problem is that Edna doesn't feel comfortable with the boys calling her "new mom", while they don't feel comfortable with calling her "Edna" (which is what Edna would prefer, but Rod and Todd have been raised to think it's rude to call adults by their first name).
  • The Powerpuff Girls:
    • The Professor's new paramour eventually turns out to be the villain Sedusa, but the girls were very suspicious of her from the start.
    • One episode had Utonium date the girls' kindergarten teacher, Ms. Keane. The two together are a Fan-Preferred Couple but in the series the Powerpuff Girls hate the two together for being annoying. Eventually they breakup due to a disagreement about cats.
  • An episode of Duckman featured this trope; Duckman brings his new girlfriend home to meet his family, wondering if they'll accept her. His teenage son Ajax cries "Mommy!", leaps into the woman's lap and starts sucking his thumb.
  • Metalocalypse plays with this trope in the episode "FatherKlok", where Skwisgaar's search for his own biological father is interrupted by his mother introducing his new stepfather to him. Complete with a "You amn'ts my f**kings dad!" from Skwisgaar. However, by the end of the episode, the two of them get along rather well. Too bad this is Metalocalypse we're talking about...
  • Stan from American Dad! has a creepy relationship with his mom, because he remembers how heartbroken she was when his dad walked out on them and fears any actual romantic interest would do the same. It turns out he's gone as far as kidnapping each of them, but comes around after Francine stops him from ruining her Third Date Marriage.
  • Family Guy had an episode where Peter's mother started dating local reporter Tom Tucker. Initially Peter is upset and tries to patch things up between his mother and father, but after a little while he warms up to Tucker and they get along very well - only for things to get complicated when Peter's mother dumps him.
  • Darkwing Duck's Happily Adopted daughter, Gosalyn, really likes his reformed criminal girlfriend Morgana. There is even an episode where, after Darkwing and Morgana have a fight, she tries to patch up their relationship with a Love Potion. Hilarity Ensues.
  • This was never a problem in Phineas and Ferb where Phineas and Candace get along well with Ferb's father and likewise Ferb with Candace and Phineas's mom.
  • When Vergil's dad started dating again in Static Shock it turned out that Vergil already knew her-she was the cop he ran from when she tried to search his backpack (which contained his superhero costume). Awkward.
  • In The Movie to Rocket Power, Raymundo meets Tito's cousin Noelani on a trip to Hawaii and quickly gets involved with her. Otto can't stand her because she hogs his dad's attention and dampens the fun on their extreme activities; and Reggie resents her because she feels like Noelani is replacing their late mother.
  • Archer:
    • Even a hint of Malory having a sexual relationship hits Archer's Berserk Button (and Malory is FAR from celibate) so this comes up a lot. It's especially amusing with Burt Reynolds since Archer is torn between his love of Reynolds and his somewhat creepy obsession with keeping his mom single.
    • Happens again in "Fugue and Riffs" when when we find out the trauma that caused Archer's Laser-Guided Amnesia: his mom getting married.
  • In the Disney episodes of Doug, Patti's father began dating the school English teacher, Ms. Krystal. Patti was not initially thrilled, partly because it interfered with the bond she had with her dad, and because she still missed her mother. She eventually warmed up to the idea, and Patti's father and Ms. Krystal got married in the series finale.
  • Though we don't know much of Papa Smurf's past, his dating Flowerbell the woodnymph in The Smurfs (1981) episode "Papa's Wedding Day" does become a matter of contention with his little Smurfs, up until they discover that Flowerbell was just tricking Papa Smurf into marrying her so that her captor Lord Balthazar could capture Papa Smurf in exchange for her freedom.
  • Clémentine features a Type 1, with Clementine getting along pretty well with her widowed father's Nice Girl of a girlfriend, the Circus Girl Éole. The only time she's mean to her, it's mostly because of stress (Clementine is Delicate and Sickly) and Clementine's Fairy Companion Hemera quickly sets her straight.
  • An episode of W.I.T.C.H. has Will's mom hitting it off with her new history teacher. Will has no issue with her mother dating; however the fact it's her teacher turns her off. Will ends up accidentally ruining their romance when she knocked out her teacher (because she thought he was a monster in disguise). This causes him not to drop off papers to Will's mom, which leads to them breaking up because Will's mom deems him unreliable.
    • However, she finds out in season 2 that her mom and the teacher got back together without telling her. She calls her mom out on it, which said teacher agrees with, and, after a bit of a cooling off period, the three go out to dinner together in an effort to connect outside of the classroom/house.
  • In Steven Universe Sour Cream's mother Vidalia ended up marrying the fisherman Yellowtail some time after Sour Cream was born from a brief fling Vidalia had with Marty that left her pregnant. Yellowtail seems to get along with Sour Cream and not treat him any different from his biological son, Onion, but the two disagree over Sour Cream's dream to be a DJ when Yellowtail wants him to be a fisherman like him, and Sour Cream calls him by name or "my stepdad". Once Sour Cream sees Marty's true colors in the episode "Drop Beat Dad" he switches to "Yellowdad" and the two seem to be on better terms.
  • OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes: In the season two premiere "Seasons Change", KO's mom Carol is shown to have started dating his boss Mr. Gar, who was once her teammate and has been carrying a torch for her since they started as heroes. KO himself is initially oblivious to the fact that his mother and boss are dating each other, and his co-workers have to directly point this out to him. He accepts it immediately (particularly since he already likes and looks up to Mr. Gar), while said co-workers are the ones who find it slightly weird.
  • In Over the Garden Wall, a big strain on Wirt and Greg's relationship is the fact that they're only half-brothers, as Wirt's mother remarried for unspecified reasons and later had Greg with her new husband. Wirt refers to him as Greg's "stupid dad" and evidently does not like him, with this disdain extending to Greg, not helped by Greg being a full ten years younger.
  • The fourth season of The Venture Brothers plays this trope thoroughly, which seems odd given that the brothers only ever had one parent, and that didn't change. What changed is that longtime bodyguard Brock—who had already been set up as something of a Parental Substitute—quit the job, and former archenemy Sgt. Hatred stepped in. Hank in particular spends most of the season sulking, hoping for Brock's return, and baiting Hatred. He even tells him, "You're not my real bodyguard." Hatred, in turn, tries desperately to win the boys' approval, going so far as to force Hank to shoot him so that Hank will remember the day he "took a bullet for them". Later it turns out that Brock is still around, kind of, so when he and Hatred are together they tend to behave like ex-husband/new husband, especially where the boys are concerned.
  • In the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic episode "Common Ground", the geeky stallion Quibble Pants starts dating Clear Sky, a single mother, only to find that her daughter, a sports-loving filly named Wind Sprint, doesn't like him at all. He asks Rainbow Dash to help him look like a sports fanatic so Wind Sprint will accept him, but her various schemes don't work out. It's revealed that Wind Sprint misses her Disappeared Dad, and is angry that Quibble Pants is supposed to be a substitute. Clear Sky reassures her that isn't the case, and Quibble Pants asks if Wind Sprint could teach him about sports, which is just what they needed to start getting along.
  • In the What If…? (2021) episode What If... Hela Found the Ten Rings Hela refers to not liking her father's new girlfriend Frigga. This also confirms a fan theory that Hela and Thor had different mothers.
