  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: In-universe example. The food Sanji meant to give Pudding before finding out that she was Evil All Along turned out to be food that he normally makes for the Straw Hats, showing that, despite his words of wanting to give in to the situation around him, Sanji subconsciously is still trying to find the will to defy his captors and rejoin his friends. This is especially prevalent when Bobbin, one of Big Mom's generals, tries to take a bit of said food without asking and gets met with a violent kick to the face from Sanji, who did the attack completely on instinct.
  • Dark Action Girl:
    • Vinsmoke Reiju is a military commander of the Germa 66 armies and a Princess, but it's subverted in that while she acts snobbish, she's not so evil and her behavior is really a carefully crafted facade due to her family believing that Virtue Is Weakness and will abuse her if she shows her true colors.
    • Several members of Big Mom's family and pirate crew happen to be female and capable of kicking ass. Charlotte Smoothie in particular works as one of her mother's three Sweet Commanders and possesses a whopping bounty of 932,000,000 beri, the highest bounty of any female One Piece character that's third only to her brother Charlotte Katakuri (who also happens to be a Sweet Commander) and Jack of the Beasts Pirates at this point of the series.
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • Even before he got stranded on a barren rock of an island with Zeff and nearly starved to death, Sanji had a terrible childhood. Before he and his (older and younger) fraternal quadruplet brothers were born, his father, Judge, experimented on them in utero in order to turn them into the perfect Super Soldiers, also removing their ability to feel and understand compassion so they can become better at killing and waging war. His mother, Sora, tried to protect her sons by secretly ingesting a dangerous gene modification-reversing drug, but it only worked with Sanji and the drug slowly killed her, growing steadily ill before she died. Because Sanji was the only one of his brothers who was born normal, Judge saw him as a "failure" and let his siblings viciously torment him for most of his childhood. After continuously failing to catch up with his siblings, who were all becoming superhuman warriors while still young, Sanji was forced to wear an iron mask and left in the family dungeons to rot, not to mention his love for cooking was relentlessly mocked/denied for being non-royal behavior. The only support in the family he had came from Sora, who died while he was still young, and Reiju, who otherwise couldn't help him while their father and brothers were around for fear of receiving abuse herself. Eventually he managed to run away from home with Reiju's help, but the horrible experiences he had hardened him. He outright admits, years later, that he doesn't have a single happy memory of his family and only feels hatred for them.
    • Reiju lost her mother, Sora, at a young age when Sora sacrificed herself to save her then-unborn quadruplet sons from Judge's plans, by taking a dangerous gene modification-reversing drug to preserve their humanity after Judge performed experiments on them in utero to turn them the perfect killing machines; only Sanji was saved. Like her brothers, she was mentally altered to follow her father's orders, but she didn't have her empathy outright surgically removed, allowing her to understand the moral depravity of Germa 66's conquests. She hated her family's horrific mistreatment of Sanji, yet fear of receiving the same thing forced her to only help Sanji in secret. Eventually she helped Sanji escape and run away from home, but she had to stay behind and commit atrocities for her father, which made her so utterly consumed with guilt and self-loathing that she wished to die. She doesn't protest when Sanji revealed Big Mom's plans to murder the Vinsmoke family, because she believes that's what she deserves.
    • Charlotte Chiffon was frequently physically abused by her mother, Big Mom, ever since Lola ran away from a political Arranged Marriage with the giant prince, Loki, thus further souring relations between the Big Mom pirates and the giants and ruining Big Mom's plans to become Pirate King. Every time she crossed paths with Big Mom, she would be beaten within an inch of her life. Her brothers and sisters knew what was going on, but did not interfere. After marrying Bege and having Pez, Chiffon eventually decided to cut ties from Big Mom and help Bege kill her, because she only sees her parent as a monster (though she has Lola's safety in mind as well).
    • Pudding is revealed to have one as well in Chapter 862. Her Third Eye that was inherited from her father, who was of the rare Three-Eye tribe, made her the target of such severe childhood ridicule from both her mother and the other kids. Unlike Sanji, who had his own rays of hope in his abusive family in the form of Reiju and Sora, Pudding had no one to turn to for help, and the ridicule and abuse eventually became so much that she completely snapped, and became the sadistic and cunning psychopath she is today. When her groom-to-be, Sanji, became the first person to compliment her third eye, Pudding is so overwhelmed by his compassion that she cries Broken Tears and feels unable to kill him as she and her mother planned.
    • As shown in Flashback below, even Big Mom has this. To put it simply: her abnormal gluttony has plagued her ever since she was little, and losing Mother Carmel as well as her fellow orphans only added to it. Mother Carmel and later Streusen's extremely lax parenting enabled her worst traits and turned her into the monstrous pirate Emperor.
    • Like Pudding, Charlotte Katakuri was bullied and shunned a lot as a child for having a monstrously fanged mouth, but he didn't care about it as long as he could beat anyone up... until his bullies decided to horribly scar Brulee to spite him instead. Katakuri felt incredibly guilty that his arrogant recklessness caused his sister to get hurt, so he went to extreme lengths to hide everything "flawed" about himself so none of his siblings would get hurt again. But the praise and admiration he receives is hollow, and Katakuri has to do anything to keep up his public image, leaving him incredibly stressed with almost no room to breathe. His "snack times" are the only way for him to relax and enjoy himself without everyone watching him all the time.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This arc is for Sanji, who up until now had a Mysterious Past. It also highlights Big Mom and her crew (who both had been introduced back in the Fishman Island arc) and her immediate/extended family.
  • Death Faked for You: In the past, due to all of Sanji's shortcomings as a child, Judge decided to pass him off as "dead" by claiming that it was a Training "Accident", to the point of holding a funeral and speech for him in front of his soldiers. In truth, Sanji was put in an iron mask and into a cell, Left for Dead.
  • Death Seeker: After learning of the Charlotte Family's plan for the wedding, Reiju tells Sanji to run away with the rest of the crew and leave his biological family to their fates. He protests immediately — while he cares nil for his brothers and father, he has no desire for his sister to die with them. To this, she replies that while she shares his compassion, the modifications made to her body ensure that she can never disobey their father, and thus is complicit in all their crimes. Reiju feels that death is the only way she can ever atone for all the terrible things she's done.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best:
    • Vinsmoke Sora was an exceptionally kind woman, who pulled a Mama Bear after Judge forcibly experimented on her then-unborn quadruplet sons to turn them into utterly remorseless super-soldiers, by secretly taking a drug that reversed gene modifications to preserve their humanity. And during her last moments, she encouraged Sanji's love for cooking and enjoyed seeing him display his compassion. If it weren't for her, Sanji would have turned out as bad as his brothers.
    • Subverted with Mother Carmel; she was an Underworld agent and massive Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who put on a pacifistic, motherly facade to lure in children so she could sell them to slavers, or the World Government. None of the orphans under her care knew about this, and one of them, Big Mom, unknowingly emulated her adoptive mother out of love despite everything about Mother Carmel being a total lie.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: The Big Mom Pirates were so confident in the strength of their most powerful crewmember and sibling, Charlotte Katakuri, that they felt that defeat was not possible for him. Their reaction was one of shock, outrage, and disbelief when they learn from Brulee that Luffy took him down.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Sora, the mother of the Vinsmoke children, caught an illness that she later died from. Sanji and Reiju were the only ones of her children who visited her while she was sick, come hell or high water. Chapter 852 reveals that this was due to a drug she secretly drank in order to prevent her sons from becoming emotionless weapons. The only child it worked on was Sanji.
  • Delinquent Hair:
    • Charlotte Moscato's blue-pink hair resembles a pompadour made of whipped ice cream, though he himself isn't a delinquent by profession.
    • Vinsmoke Niji has a downward pompadour that cranks Franky's old pre-Time Skip Cola-depleted hairstyle up to eleven. While he isn't a delinquent, he is an evil and spiteful Royal Brat who cares for no one but himself.
    • Moscato's little brother Charlotte Anglaise sports a pompadour to go along with his Greaser Delinquents get-up.
    • One of the orphan kids taken in by Mother Carmel wore a dark mohawk.
    • Charlotte Noisette has a long, pointy pompadour that's connected to a equally long beard via his sideburns.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Sanji goes through this twice. The first time was when the stress from being blackmailed into an Arranged Marriage and being forced to pull a Break His Heart to Save Him gambit on Luffy and Nami makes him realize that he has truly run out of options for a way out of his situation, making him see as Pudding (who he sees as a good, innocent and pretty girl) as his last ray of hope. The second time is applied brutally, when he accidentally catches Pudding in a private conversation with his older sister Reiju and discovers that the whole marriage ploy was a farce from the get-go, and his bride-to-be was Evil All Along. The only things that kept Sanji going at all was Luffy delivering a Get A Hold Of Yourself Man moment, and Sanji's compassion influencing him to save the Vinsmokes.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?:
    • In Chapter 847, Luffy tells Big Mom (who reveals she also wants to be the Pirate King and is threatening one of the Straw Hats' allies) to sit down and shut the fuck up, because the only person who gets to be Pirate King will be him. To her face. Subverted in that Big Mom feels too happy for the marriage to get flipped off by him.
    • In Chapter 863, not only did Jimbei tell Big Mom he's quitting her organization to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but he showed no fear in doing this, which prevents Big Mom from taking his soul. He explains that if he intends to join the crew of the future Pirate King he won't cower at a mere Emperor. To end it, he offers a cup of sake to Big Mom to mark his departure, which Big Mom responds by stomping on the cup.
    • In Chapter 864, Katakuri orders Capone Bege to kill Luffy in a desperate attempt to avert the horrible future he foresaw. Bege's response is to essentially tell him, "Fuck you", and prepare to fight him instead.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: When Big Mom boards the Sunny, Nami, Brook, Chopper and Jimbei are forced into a battle against her. Thanks to Jimbei's water powers, Chopper's Guard Point and some quick thinking on Nami and Brook's part. They actually manage to knock her off the Sunny and continue their escape. Even better, taking one of her elite homies, Zeus, hostage after they depower him.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Bege and Luffy's alliance catches Big Mom's family completely off-guard. To drive the point home, one powerful warrior there, Katakuri, can see into the future but is unable to control the situation. Katakuri predicts Pudding will fail to kill Sanji and he will also dodge the shot from the priest, but Sanji manages to dodge his shot as well. Then Luffy makes his grand entrance...
    • ...which involves a bunch of animals turned into doppelgängers of himself bursting out of the wedding cake. To Bege's surprise, Luffy quickly calls out to Big Mom instead of trying to sneak on her. It appears he's just being his usual reckless self, but the result is that Katakuri notices and traps him with his powers and Big Mom's allies immediately disregard Luffy's clones, not realizing one of them is Brook in disguise. Brook quickly smashes Mother Carmel's picture to pieces while everyone else is distracted by Jimbei's resignation from Big Mom's organization.
    • Ironically, despite having the power to predict the future with Haki, Katakuri's visions omitted that Sanji would be the one to make Pudding have her Villainous Breakdown and derail the wedding plans. His subsequent attempts to kill Sanji are foiled when Sanji reveals himself to have superior Observation Haki, which results in the Vinsmokes, Big Mom's targets, being tipped off to something going on, and the wedding plans themselves going completely out of control as the Straw Hats and their allies crash the party.
    • This happens to the allied forces in Chapter 868. Despite Bege's plan to make Big Mom scream to both weaken her and incapacitate her subordinates succeeding, the assassination itself unexpectedly fails due to Big Mom's powerful scream destroying the missiles that were to kill her. Even worse, Big Mom's same scream ended up breaking the mirror they were going to use to escape, leaving them trapped against the Big Mom Pirates.
    • Towards the end of the arc, the Charlotte family's plan to capture the Straw Hats at Cacao Island hits a major snag when they receive the shocking news from Brulee that Katakuri, their most powerful sibling, has fallen to Luffy. Then, as they all try to kill Luffy and Sanji, they're completely blindsided by the sudden arrival at the Vinsmokes, who are understandably pissed off over Big Mom's betrayal and carve out a majority of their forces.
  • Didn't Think This Through: For all that he hates Sanji for not inheriting the gene modifications his brothers had, it never once occurs to Judge to somehow give Sanji those modifications when he was growing up, and or activate them if they had been somehow dormant. As it turns out, the gene modifications are dormant, and begin to awaken during the Onigashima War thanks Sanji's continued use of the raid suit Niji gave him. Because of Judge's arrogance, he lost out on having Sanji, now unquestionably his strongest child, as a potential ally, let alone as a soldier.
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • Niji was willing to throw a plate at the family cook Cosette just because he doesn't like the food. Later when Sanji defends her and scolds him for his actions, he later does this to Sanji by beating Cosette up off-screen just to spite him.
    • Just about everything Big Mom does to anyone who disobeys her and/or angers her leads to utter catastrophe. When a wedding guest asked about Mother Carmel's portrait, Big Mom blasted him with Haki.
  • Distracted by the Sexy:
    • Yonji gets heart-eyed when he sees Nami for the first time, and later ogles her Wanted Poster.
    • When Luffy and Nami encounter the Vinsmoke family carriage, Yonji and Niji get heart eyes when they see Nami. Even Ichiji gets heart eyes without showing his face.
    • Unsurprisingly, the sight of his beautiful bride-to-be, Pudding, causes Sanji to go gaga and nosebleed in front of her. This is despite his heartbreaking discovery that Pudding is Evil All Along and planning to kill his biological family, which Sanji himself acknowledges.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: As a child, Big Mom didn't have much control over her strength, and her good intentions would end up making things worse. For example, when she attempted to "spank" a bear for getting into a fight with a wolf, she ended up killing the bear in one hit. Then when one of the giant heroes tried to kill her for wreaking destructive havoc on Elbaf during a hunger-induced rampage, Big Mom killed him in one hit.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet:
    • The Straw Hats manage to escape the Whole Cake Chateau and are at least a good distance away from the enemies' range. Only thing left to do is make it back to the Sunny before Big Mom's Pirates regroup and get out of the island vicinity. Seems easy enough, they even get King Braum to help them again (as Nami had the common sense to rip Lola's Virve Card in two, meaning Amande only pulled one half off of her) and take a shortcut through the Seducing Woods. All clear on the horizon, ri— Wait, what's that figure coming toward them...? Oh, Crap! It's Big Mom, and she in one of her food frenzies!
    • During Luffy's fight with Katakuri, he manages to find out how his powers work while getting in a few good licks on him. But Katakuri recovers and hits back hard. Telling Luffy just because he knows how it works doesn't mean that Katakuri can't regain his composure.
    • During the chase at sea, Big Mom's Pirates manage to box in the Sunny with their fleets. Luckily, it's a full moon out and Carrot reveals a One-Winged Angel form call Suilong which gives her a significant power boost. She attacks the ships in front of them and disables their rudders, keeping Daifuku and his fleet from blocking them and giving the Sunny an escape route. However just when they're about to take it, Big Mom flies directly to the Sunny and boards their ship, forcing the Straw Hats into a fight.
  • Don't Wake the Sleeper: When Brook is held by Big Mom, the Straw Hats have to rescue him while she's sleeping. The problem is, she and her homies will utterly crush anything that disturbs her sleep. Fortunately they manage to do it after a few tries.
  • Double Knockout: What Luffy and Katakuri's fight initially concludes to. Sure, Luffy falls first but Katakuri drops face down shortly after. After ten minutes, Luffy manages to get back to his feet. Katakuri likewise looks to be standing as well... but falls backwards shortly afterwards, giving Luffy the win.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Originally, when Luffy and the others meet Pudding, Big Mom's daughter that Sanji is being forced to marry, they are unaware of who she actually is. However, they do find out in the next chapter.
    • Originally, Sanji was under the impression that once the wedding was finished and the alliance between Big Mom and the Vinsmokes was completed, he'd be free to return to his crew, unaware that Pekoms himself told the crew that once the marriage is complete, he will no longer be a Straw Hat. Judge told him straight out that he'd never see his crew again.
    • Once Nami finds out Big Mom is Lola's mother, she finds that the Vivre Card can keep Big Mom's "Homies" from attacking her. What makes it ironic? The card was meant to lead them to Big Mom (though at first they never know who Lola's mom is) in case they got into trouble. What's more, they also end up running into Lola's father, Pound, in the process.
    • Brûlée boasts that the Seducing Woods are inescapable, with Urouge, the sole member of the Worst Generation to take down one of Big Mom's commanders, dead after Cracker defeated him, and believes his corpse lying around somewhere in the area. A previous chapter established that Urouge had managed to escape and was recuperating on a Sky Island.
    • Cracker tells Luffy during their fight that, even if he did manage to reach Sanji, Sanji would tell him to "get out of [his] sight, you worthless trash" and would choose to keep his life of royalty. Luffy angrily insists that Sanji would never speak to his friends like that. However, when he and Nami do reach Sanji, this is more-or-less exactly what he says to them (albeit not because he wanted to or truly felt that way, as Cracker believed, but because he and Zeff are both hostages of the Vinsmokes and Big Mom in different ways). Luffy is understandably angry at this and question if he means what he says.
    • "Red Leg" Zeff sacrificed one of his own legs so little Sanji won't starve while they were both stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean. Years later, Sanji's friend Luffy is willing to starve himself to death if it meant freeing him from his Arranged Marriage and, ultimately, Big Mom's clutches, never knowing how much he emulated Zeff's sacrifice. One must wonder what was going through Sanji's head when Luffy made that decision.
    • Big Mom has taken a liking to the box said to contain the Tatamebako from Fishman Island and plans to open it at the tea party, the audience being the only ones aware that it'll explode the moment that happens.
    • In a flashback, Lola said confidently that Big Mom wouldn't kill her for running out on her Arranged Marriage because they're family. She tragically overestimates Big Mom's feelings about family.
    • Sanji was ridiculed and beaten by his brothers for being a 'failure' regarding Judge's intentions of making the brothers excellent and fearless warriors. As we learnt later, Sanji's mother Sora took a reversing drug which aimed to counteract Judge's tampering and make their children good people, which tragically only worked on Sanji. This would make Sanji's brothers the actual failures, as Sanji was born a normal kid.
    • The Vinsmokes planned on kidnapping Pudding after the wedding, in order to keep a trump card against Big Mom. Too bad for them, Pudding herself played the same card on them first, with Reiju as her hostage. Doubly ironic is that the Vinsmoke brothers briefly discussed that they wouldn't care if Big Mom would pull that with Sanji.
    • Judge is unaware that the wedding to Pudding he blackmailed Sanji into going through was a complete farce to begin with; Big Mom and Pudding have no intention to go through with it and plan to murder all of the Vinsmokes on the day of the supposed wedding, so Big Mom can have Judge's prized cloning technologies for herself. He's also unaware the explosive bracelets he had Reiju put on Sanji were duds; while Reiju can't fully disobey Judge, she doesn't like the idea of harming the only sibling who has her and her dead mother's empathy.
    • Pudding, after revealing she was Evil All Along and telling Reiju her plans to help Big Mom kill the Vinsmokes, wonders what Sanji's opinion on her would be now, unaware that Sanji himself was secretly listening in from outside in the rain with a completely shocked and heartbroken expression on his face.
    • In Chapter 854, because of the multiple events that occurred during the arc, none of Big Mom's children and subordinates knows the true whereabouts of the Straw Hat Pirates except Brook. The guards outside Sanji's room thinks Sanji is sleeping in his bed, but it's actually the guard who was supposed to keep an eye on him. They think Pedro blew himself up, killing himself, but he actually got rescued by Chopper and Carrot. They were told that Brulee already captured Chopper and Carrot, but they have no idea that Brulee is already defeated and taken hostage by them. And Opera lies about Jimbei beating him and freeing Luffy and Nami and tells them he burned them alive to avoid Big Mom's wrath; although Mont-D'or sent guards out on watch to ensure Opera isn't lying.
    • Big Mom was under the belief that she managed to stop Brook from obtaining the rubbings of her Poneglyphs, but Chapter 855 shows that he quickly managed to finish them before she busted in and managed to hide them in his skull.
    • Nami is furious with Sanji for disowning her and Luffy as his friends and beating up Luffy, unaware that he had been blackmailed by his family to ensure his compliance with marrying Pudding, and wanted to protect them from a horrible fate.
    • After Brook and Luffy take a shower in the Firetank Pirates' hideout, Brook exclaims out loud how nice it felt, leading to Luffy chiding him for acting like he was just in some big fight. Of course, he doesn't know that Brook faced off against Big Mom herself mano-a-mano just a few hours ago.
    • When she was a child, Big Mom believed her birth parents went to "work" far away for a while until they would come back and take her home. They actually lied to her — they abandoned her on Elbaf because of the wanton destruction her strength would cause whenever she got too hungry, and they couldn't deal with it anymore, though they were equally reluctant to abandon their daughter.
    • Big Mom's entire belief in a united world comes from the teachings of Mother Carmel, completely unaware that such teachings were a sham and Carmel was a slave trader who sold the orphans she took in to the World Government.
    • In Chapter 875, after seeing a large discharge of lightning from Zeus, Perospero assumed that Big Mom used her power to wipe out the Straw Hats, unaware that it was Big Mom who was on the receiving end of the blast.
    • The Vinsmokes in general, save for Sanji and Sora, are unaware of Reiju's true personality, motives, and how she sees them. Justified, and for good reason — if they knew how much she hated them for their warmongering and Jerkass behavior towards Sanji and everyone else, they would start beating her within an inch of her life, too.
    • In Chapter 880, during Big Mom's pursuit of the Straw Hats, fraternal twins Charlotte Mascarpone and Charlotte Joscarpone use flaming arrows and Brulee's mirrors to set the Thousand Sunny on fire, believing it'll weaken the Straw Hats enough for a rampaging Big Mom to catch up and decimate them. In Chapter 881, when the mirrors mysteriously start breaking, Mascarpone assumes that Big Mom and Perospero managed to sink the Straw Hats for good. What actually happened was that the Straw Hats destroyed their mirrors to prevent further attacks, and Jimbe saved the crew from drowning by sailing the Thousand Sunny through the "Green Room".
    • Initially we were led to believe that Katakuri hid his fangs from everyone, as The Reveal was intercut with Brulee boasting her brother was the perfect and the strongest warrior ever, adjacent with Katakuri wolfing down snacks not differently than Luffy or Big Mom herself. In Chapter 902, it turns out that she knew about her brother's condition, in fact Katakuri went masked because Brulee was attacked and disfigured by bullies who couldn't harm Katakuri directly, and he did all that as his own Declaration of Protection.
    • Upon learning that Bege was transporting the cake to stop Big Mom's tantrum, Perospero believes that the cake is poisoned and can't be trusted, when in truth, Sanji prevented Bege from doing that. Even more than that, Bege even went along with it after tasting a bit of the cake, thoroughly convinced that even Big Mom would be rendered invalid after tasting Sanji's cooking.
    • When Luffy escapes from the Mirror World in Chapter 897, Charlotte Raisin commends him for managing to outsmart Katakuri, never even considering the possibility that Luffy beat Katakuri fair and square. The entirety of Katakuri's family is operating under the same assumption as well. The thing is, at one point, Luffy did actually outsmart Katakuri and escaped the Mirror World with Brulee in tow — then went back in, and beat Katakuri anyway.
    • When they do find out, they refuse to believe it, then accuse Luffy of using a dirty trick to win. Not only is that not true, it was actually their sister, Flampe, who interfered with the fight and tried to use a dirty trick to help Katakuri win.
  • Dramatic Unmask:
    • In chapter 845, Sanji privately reveals to Pudding just how horrible the Vinsmoke family is by tearing off the mask Reiju put on him to "heal" his injuries from his brothers' No-Holds-Barred Beatdown back in chapter 841, showing a horrifically swollen and bruised face. Pudding is horrified to the point of breaking into tears and apologizing profusely for inconveniencing him, at least on the surface.
    • Five chapters later, Pudding reveals the Third Eye she always keeps hidden with her fringe... along with her "true" personality. It's a rather unsettling Wham Shot. Sanji, who happened to be eavesdropping, was heartbroken beyond the breaking point.
    • In Chapter 862, Pudding reveals her Third Eye to Sanji during their wedding, hoping to provoke a horrified reaction before shooting the groom... except that gets turned on its head when Sanji does the unthinkable — complimenting her third eye.
  • The Dreaded:
    • The Vinsmokes, and by extension Germa 66, have this reputation, due to the Vinsmokes being deadly royal Underworld assassins, and Germa 66 being a mythical evil army (which was in part due to Marines propaganda). They also happen to be Sanji's biological family. Brook apparently heard of them, going into Oh, Crap! territory after Sanji receives a letter that revealed his family name in the previous arc.
    • The Sweet Commanders have some of the highest bounties ever recorded in One Piecenote , and rightfully so, since fighting them is like trying to punch a brick wall. By extension, the rest of Big Mom's family/crew are feared as well and have several hard-hitters, as the Vinsmoke brothers and Vito observe.
    • Big Mom herself actually exploits this: The key to her soul-taking ability rely on the target fearing her and immediate death. If the target doesn't, then it'll simply fail.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: When Nami freaks out at encountering a talking crocodile, Luffy points out that she really shouldn't be surprised at such developments with Chopper on the crew and them knowing the Mink Tribe, and Nami concedes the point.

    E
  • Easily Forgiven: At first, Big Mom is willing to turn a blind eye to the Straw Hats and let them leave her territory alive after they're captured, at Sanji's behest. She does, however, sternly tell Sanji that under normal circumstances she'd make them pay for the bad things they've done to her (beating up Cracker and her troops, eating the candies at Fishman Island). When a captured and beaten Luffy dares to challenge Big Mom and claims that he'll take her down soon enough, she just lets it slide as things are going too well for anything to bother her. In reality however, it's later revealed that Big Mom has no intention of doing so. She plans to kill Straw Hats after her plan to betray and massacre the Vinsmokes including Sanji, a scheme that Pudding is actually in on.
    • It's later deconstructed in Chapter 866's flashbacks into Big Mom's past — because Mother Carmel forgave her every time she accidentally caused trouble with her strength or eating habits instead of properly disciplining her, Big Mom would grow up with a warped sense of right and wrong. It would later get on the nerves of Elbaf's populace, after Big Mom went stir-crazy from hunger during a winter fasting and destroyed almost the entire village for sweets. Then, Big Mom kills Jorl during said hunger rampage. While Jarl decides to spare Big Mom after Mother Carmel convinces him not to kill the girl, he does make sure to let everyone Elbaf know of her actions, resulting in strained relations between Big Mom and the giants later on.
  • Emperor Scientist: Vinsmoke Judge is one, as he is a king who uses his scientific skills to achieve his goals. In particular, he uses the research he gained via working with Vegapunk in the past to create his Clone Army and to genetically engineer his children to be strong beyond human limitations, physically (Super-Strength, Super-Toughness) and psychologically (Lack of Empathy in Sanji's brothers).
  • Enchanted Forest: The Seducing Woods are full of all kinds of dangerous stuff: delicious treats to lure victims in, sentient talking animals dressed like humans (Not Minks, judging from Carrot's lack of a reaction), a weird giant stuck in the floor, duplicates of yourself which copy your every move like a mirror, and the very trees themselves deliberately screwing travelers over by moving around and covering exits, to "play a game of death".
  • Enemy Mine: Capone Bege had no intention of allying with Big Mom and had been secretly planning to kill her from the get-go, with his wife Chiffon supporting him because of the constant abuse she suffered at her mother's hands. Caesar Clown is in on it because his life is on the line making that promised giantification formula, with his fate being turned into candy and eaten if he doesn't. The Straw Hats are in on it because Sanji wished to save his family (despite how much he hates most of them) from a gory fate at Big Mom's hands. These guys normally would hate each others' guts, but they decide to work together to achieve their goal.
  • Enfant Terrible: While she was mostly a Cheerful Child in the beginning, Big Mom didn't start acting so monstrous until she met Streusen, who filled her head with dreams and allowed her to go on destructive rampages trying to fulfill her dreams. Her first WG-issued bounty was 50,000,00 beri, and she was still a kid at the time!
  • Epic Fail:
    • Despite Bege having the assassination plan all thought out down to the letter, it ends up falling apart due to Big Mom unexpectedly destroying his assassination weapons and escape mirror with her Haki-fueled screams.
    • Despite Streusen saving everyone when the chateau collapsed by transforming it into whipped cream and sponge cake to cushion the fall, he was the only one to get injured pretty badly.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Charlotte Moscato's fellow Ministers and siblings Opera, Galette, and Mont-d'Or were left pretty shaken when they witness Big Mom ripping out 40 years of his lifespan for defying her, even after they told him not to show fear.
    • When the body of the defeated Cracker comes flying into Big Mom's chateau courtesy of Luffy, Mont-d'Or immediately swears vengeance on Luffy. They all later join Big Mom's army to hunt down Luffy for his transgressions.
    • In Chapter 846, when Big Mom's crew finds out Luffy and Nami acquired a Vivre Card from Lola, several of her siblings immediately worry that the Straw Hats killed her and ask for her last words. It's later subverted as a few of said siblings reappear listening to Big Mom telling the captured Luffy and Nami her plans to send assassins after Lola for defying her, and they're completely fine with it. Opera in particular is willing to torture Nami for Lola's location, but then Jimbei walked in.
    • Mother Carmel, for Big Mom. She keeps a portrait of her, and seeing it makes her genuinely happy. That being said, asking about Mother Carmel is a big no-no, and breaking the portrait will make her experience epic emotional breakdowns. As of Chapter 865, it's revealed that Mother Carmel's portrait is all that Big Mom has left of her. She even modeled her own dreams based on Mother Carmel's pacifist teachings. The cruel irony to this is when it was revealed that Mother Carmel herself was a child slave trader who sold unsuspecting children to the highest bidders, and clearly didn't give a shit about Big Mom or any of the orphans under her care.
    • Katakuri is revealed to be a loving family man, as his stoic facade stemmed from his guilt over his recklessness causing Brulee to be scarred by his childhood bullies. He's wholly dedicated to protecting his siblings at any way possible, and curbstomps anyone who goes after them... but unfortunately, apparently his efforts weren't enough as he didn't protect Pudding from bullying, and Chiffon from being abused by Big Mom.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Despite allying himself with Big Mom, Judge actually holds her with contempt and sees her as "deranged". This is the same guy who's a Bad Boss to his own armies and treated his weakling son Sanji like complete crap! He also doesn't like killing off his own son despite hating Sanji.
    • In Chapter 847, when Big Mom shows her library collection of rare creatures who are trapped inside her books, the Vinsmokes were visibly disturbed by her collections. Even Niji was shocked that Big Mom would also trap humans in her collections. It's later justified in Chapter 852; while the drug Vinsmoke Sora took to reverse her then-unborn sons' genetic enhancements only worked on Sanji, it also managed to preserve what little humanity they had left from Judge's experiments.
    • Despite being known as an "evil army" by the Marines and the world at large, Germa 66 does have some principles. First, they refuse to target bystanders unrelated to whoever they’re being paid to fight. Second, they consider ‘double-dipping’, or taking money from both sides of a conflict and controlling the outcome, to be beneath them.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good:
    • Sanji's brothers are unable to understand why he would continue to display compassion and not act like a "proper prince", and would physically and verbally abuse him (and still do) every time he does. Justified in their case; their father, Judge, surgically removed their ability to feel and understand empathy before they were born, and the gene surgery-reversing drug their dead mother took to save them only saved a tiny piece of their humanity. They can't understand acts of compassion because they were modified to be that way.
    • Judge couldn't comprehend why Sanji, his weakling son, continued to feed stray animals despite being heavily abused by his own father and brothers, as Judge believed helping others was beneath royalty. He also didn't comprehend why experimenting on his own children (leading to the death of his wife) and treating his own soldiers/servants like shit would be a bad idea.
  • Evil Chef:
    • Streusen is an influential figure in Big Mom's life as The Corrupter, and is responsible for baking the wedding cake for Sanji and Pudding's wedding.
    • Pudding (a beautiful girl who was bullied all her life for her Third Eye) is a skilled chocolatier who created her café with a recipe of her own devising. In chapter 873, when Streusen gets himself injured saving the Big Mom Pirates from the collapse of Whole Cake Chateau, thus in no condition to make a new wedding cake to satisfy Big Mom's craving, Pudding volunteers to make a chocolate chiffon cake that's just as good. However, to make the cake exceptionally good, she needs help from Charlotte Chiffon, who is currently escaping with the Fire Tank Pirates. She is a subverted example because she Used to Be a Sweet Kid who snapped from the constant childhood bullying, but once she is shown true kindness by Sanji, she becomes nicer and willing to help the Straw Hats.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Judge comes to regret joining forces with Big Mom once he realizes she's going to kill the Vinsmokes and Germa 66 so she can steal their technology.
  • Evil Is Petty: Niji is described as the most spiteful of the Vinsmoke children. His mealtime quarrel with Sanji was him throwing one giant temper-tantrum at being told off, and later he severely injured the cook Cosette to spite Sanji for defending her.
  • Evil Sounds Deep:
    • The Vinsmoke males, barring Sanji who is the inverse, all have deep, arrogant-sounding voices. Niji's voice is perhaps the deepest of his family.
    • Several sons of the Charlotte family, as well as a few daughters, have deep voices as well, and they're loyal to Big Mom. Some examples are Charlotte Cracker, Charlotte Smoothie, Charlotte Katakuri, Charlotte Daifuku, and Charlotte Galette.
    • Charlotte Amande in particular is a justified example; as she always has a cigarette in her mouth, it's implied that she constantly smokes, leading to her deepened voice.
  • Evil Versus Evil: After Pudding's true nature comes out, it begins looking this way. The Vinsmokes think by having Sanji marry her, that she'll be a suitable "hostage" to control Big Mom's forces since Judge knows Big Mom is really after his cloning technology. However, Pudding reveals to Reiju that no sooner than Sanji is married to her, Big Mom will instantly kill all the Vinsmokes and Germa 66 to gain access to it. So the marriage arrangement was overall a farce from the beginning and all out war between both parties is inevitable, with the Straw Hats caught in the crossfire. And this is all before we find out Capone is planning to off Big Mom himself after managing to convince her to make him part of her army.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: In an effort to lift his and Pudding's spirits, Sanji comes over to her room to bring her lunch but is denied entry. Going around from the outside, he witnesses Pudding holding Reiju hostage and declaring her evil plans to her. On top of that, Sanji also learns of her memory manipulation ability.
  • Explaining Your Powers to the Enemy:
    • Cracker decides to go into exquisite detail explaining how his powers work to Luffy, in order to try and demoralize him. He only does this after Luffy actually cracks his first armored shell though, so it would seem he does this as kind of a mocking "reward" when he finds a formidable opponent. It bites him in the ass later when Luffy and Nami, using the information he just gave them, improvise and exploit Luffy's huge appetite to power him into a new form that not only defeats Cracker, but sends him soaring into Big Mom's house, just after Big Mom wonders why he's late to a family meeting.
    • Pudding shows off her Memo-Memo Fruit powers to Reiju because she's just about to overwrite her memories anyway. She just didn't count on Sanji watching her over the window.
    • Averted with Katakuri, who avoids Cracker's mistakes and just brutally curbstomps Luffy every chance he gets. Luffy does learn how to use Observation Haki to predict Katakuri's moves, but it's only through trial and error and remembering what Rayleigh previously taught him about Haki.
  • Explosive Leash: To keep Sanji from running away, the Vinsmokes have two of these placed, and the keys are reportedly kept by Big Mom. To further twist the knife, the collars are put on his wrists, so even if Sanji manages to survive the explosion, his ability to cook will be almost certainly destroyed. Later on, though, Reiju tells Sanji the collars were fake all along; she didn't want to harm her brother, but due to alterations on her mind, she couldn't completely disobey Judge, so she switched the bracelets with duds. After all, Judge didn't specify they had to be working...
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: "Demon Lady" Amande wears a hat that has an impossibly wide brim. Her fraternal quadruplet sisters Mondée, Hachée, and Effilée also wear wide-brimmed hats.

    F
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon:
    • Big Mom's youngest daughter, Charlotte Anana, is an adorable-looking child who mutilates her stuffed animal with knives and torments her siblings for fun.
    • Pudding is an adorable young woman and a Nice Girl on the surface, but she's really just as sadistic and cruel as her mother. In her case, she didn't start having the "Mind of a Demon" until she endured countless incidents of bullying and abuse for being third-eyed and she snapped from the torment.
  • Face Death with Despair: After learning Big Mom plans to kill the Vinsmokes, Judge begs for his life and cries.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When Big Mom's plot to kill the Vinsmokes finally comes to light, her intended victims are already at gunpoint, and only Judge starts to break down and beg for his life. Played straight with Reiju as she calmly accepts her family's impending Karmic Death, while Ichiji, Niji and Yonji deconstructs it: they all just laugh it off as Reiju silently notes that they're literally unable to fear death because of what Judge had done to them, and it's shown as a bad thing.
  • Face, Nod, Action: Ichiji and Niji nod heads just before the Vinsmokes put on their Raid Suits and commence their assault on Big Mom's family.
  • Fakin' MacGuffin: When Brook is held custody by a sleeping Big Mom, the Straw Hats plan to put a normal skeleton with seaweed hair as a replacement. It seemed to work too, given that when she wakes up, she only thought her "skeleton toy" is dead and then is distracted with the whole tea party.
  • Family Theme Naming:
    • Most members of the Charlotte family follow an Edible Theme Naming with being named after types of food (especially sweets) and drinks. However, the formula isn't entirely strict, as some Charlottes are named after things that are related to food, such as Oven and High-Fat. Opera and his quintuplet brothers (as revealed in an SBS) don't follow the theme naming per se but instead follow a Musical Theme Naming in relation to him. Lola is the only Odd Name Out as she doesn't any Family Theme Naming of any sort.
    • Save for the father and deceased mother, all of the Vinsmoke children are named after numbers, starting from the eldest child Reiju (zero) to the youngest, Yonji (four). Judge though follows a theme naming with his sons as his name in Japanese (ジャッジ) has the same ending Kanji character that Ichiji (イチジ), Niji (ニジ), Sanji (サンジ), and Yonji (ヨンジ) have. His name is thus pronounced in Japanese as "Jajji" and is the reason why it was spelled as such in some early fan scanlations.
  • Fanboy:
    • Vito has been reading Sora, Warrior of the Sea (a propaganda comic strip that glorifies the Marines) ever since he was a kid. He specifically is Rooting for the Empire in-universe, he thought the Germa 66 (the baddies in the comic) was awesome. So he's really excited when he gets to meet Sanji, one of the sons of its leader. In Chapter 856, when Bobbin tries going after Sanji, Vito offs him from afar so Sanji wouldn't be harmed.
    • One of Big Mom's lackeys admires the oldest Vinsmoke children, Ichiji and Reiju. Big Mom chastises him for being foolish.
  • Fantastic Racism: One of Big Mom's Berserk Buttons is mentioning giants around her. Given her past, and how Lola ran away from an important political marriage with a giant prince, it's not unwarranted.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Going along with the whole viking and Norse connections the giants have, their home of Elbaf is based around Nordic culture. Their homes are prominently ancient Nordic in design. Semla is a traditional Nordic sweet roll. The tradition of eating semla before fasting for the winter solstice festival harkens to Shrove Tuesday in which food is eaten in great quantities before Lent. In particular, it harkens to the version observed in certain Nordic countries such as Sweden in which semla is the dish served.
  • Fastball Special: Niji does this to Sanji and Luffy in Chapter 898, delivering them to the Thousand Sunny with a powerful kick. It harkens back to previous arcs where Sanji did the same thing with the other Straw Hats.
  • Fat Bastard: Big Mom is a grossly obese woman, something that was hinted at in her debut in the Fishman Island arc. Several of her children are fat as well; while how ugly they are depends on the individual, they're all fanatically loyal to Big Mom.
  • Final Boss Preview: This arc showcases Big Mom's power set and threat level, but Luffy and company do not intend on fighting her at this stage of their adventure, simply holding her at bay until they dealt with Kaido. At most, they plan on simply retrieving Sanji and making a beeline for Wano Country. And when fights against Big Mom actually do break out, they are incredibly one-sided, mainly because no one is prepared to deal with her in a physical confrontation, let alone her whole entourage of Homies, her 85 children, and her crew.
  • Five Stages of Grief: While not technically a death, the Big Mom Pirates go through the first two when Brulee reveals that Luffy defeated Katakuri. First they accuse her of lying (Denial) and then they accuse Luffy of using a dirty trick to win and redouble their efforts to kill him and Sanji (Anger).
  • Flashback: At least three pop up in the story.
    • First comes Sanji's, which explains his family life before leaving his kingdom and ending up with Zeff. Turns out, it wasn't a happy childhood, and he and his fraternal quadruplet brothers were only conceived just to be mindless killing machines for the Germa 66 empire. His mother, Sora, tried to interfere in the conditioning process while her sons were in the womb by taking a drug that reversed genetic enhancements, but only managed to save Sanji and died in the process. We also see Sanji being horrifically bullied by his brothers for being so weak and compassionate, his father outright saying that he's "dead to him" after a training, his escape from the place (with Reiju's help) and his younger days at Baratie which shows Zeff's teachings.
    • Next is a short one with Pudding explaining her demeanor. She was bullied as a kid for her third eye, even by her family (including, unsurprisingly, Big Mom) and figured if everyone wants to paint her a monster, she'll become one.
    • And finally Big Mom's herself is revealed at the beginning of the climax of the arc. She was abandoned by her birth parents on Elbaf due to her oblivious destructive tendencies. She was taken in by a kindly mother figure named Carmel, but because of being Easily Forgiven, was never taught between right and wrong or how to control her strength. She eventually integrated into Elbaf society and joined a winter solstice tradition where the giants fast for 12 days before a big feast. However her hunger pangs developed during this time and she destroyed an Elbaf village in the process. One of the leaders instantly pegged her for death as a result despite Carmel's pleas. Then Linlin, in her rampage, defended against said leader (Yorle) and then killed him. Because of this, Carmel decided to take her Sheep's Home and the kids away from Elbaf to another giant island. And finally, in her 6th birthday, she gets to eat croquembouche along with her friends and Carmel... but before she realized it (as she was too happily gorging on sweets), they all vanished from Linlin's eyes for reasons unknown.
  • Flight: Thanks to highly advanced technology, the Germa 66 armies and their Vinsmoke commanders can fly if they wished to. Sanji is the only one who can fly without technology; when he sees his father Judge flying during their reunion battle, he notes how ironic it is for him to do what he already can do and not know it.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: All of Big Mom's children are named after sweets and confectioneries, but almost all of them are following Big Mom's will, sometimes to high extremes, such as Pudding.
  • Foil:
    • Pudding and Reiju:
      • Reiju puts up a Jerkass front to protect herself from her abusive father and quadruplet brothers not named "Sanji", and only displays her true, compassionate self around Sanji and her (dead) mother, Sora. Pudding is a sweet and lovable girl who is actually a sadistic and cunning psychopath, and her mask hides the psychological ugliness beneath. Pudding also has compassion, but it's deeply buried because she believes no one could love someone so hideous as her.
      • Reiju was also Sanji's ray of hope and only means of survival amidst the horrific abuse he received from his brothers every day, due to being not much stronger than a normal kid. Pudding was Sanji's false "ray of hope" which he basked on in his thoughts of saving his friends through the whole wedding deal.
      • Reiju is an Action Girl who participates in battles with her family, even though she loathes doing so. Pudding isn't skilled in fighting... but thanks to her Memo-Memo Devil Fruit, she can modify people's memories however she likes on a whim, and has no qualms in doing so.
    • Pudding and Sanji:
      • Sanji's mother Sora was responsible for his existence by ingesting a dangerous gene modification-reversing drug to protect her then-unborn quadruplet sons from becoming their father's weapons. Pudding's mother Big Mom partially contributed to her daughter's brokenness, and only favors her because Pudding's Third Eye would allow her read poneglyphs when unlocked.
      • Sanji has bangs covering one eye, while Pudding doesn't... except her bangs cover her Third Eye.
      • Sanji was abused for being physically weaker than his siblings (i.e. as strong as a normal kid), yet he was able to overcome that as he grew up. Pudding was bullied because her Third Eye made her look like a freak, but since she couldn't get rid of it, the consequences of her torment would stay years after.
      • Sanji was able to retain his compassion by being around people who loved him, such as his mother (before she died), his sister Reiju, and the Straw Hats. Pudding had nobody to turn to, and even Big Mom ridiculed her Third Eye, transforming her into a thoroughly Broken Bird and Jerkass of the highest degree.
    • Katakuri and Luffy:
      • Luffy's an idiot, determined, goofy and friendly. Katakuri is stoic, calculating, and ruthless; he used to behave like Luffy when he was younger, but seeing one of his sisters get hurt because of a mistake he made forced him to shape himself up. He still retains his childhood traits, just not in public.
      • Both have Devil Fruits that allow them to manipulate their own bodies in some way... yet their personalities are the exact opposite of them. Luffy is made of rubber and is a Big Eater while Katakuri is made of mochi, a type of Japanese sweet, yet he doesn't partake in eating... at least in public where his family could see, as he's ashamed of his gluttonous eating. Luffy just eats like that out in the open and shamelessly. Carrot notes in Chapter 877 how similar their powers are to each other. And in Chapter 879, Katakuri can check, copy, and counter ever single one of Luffy's moves and surpass them in destructive might.
      • Luffy dresses in simple but very bright clothes. Katakuri looks like he's a member of a criminal biker gang.
      • Luffy is the dangerous captain of a rising pirate crew. Katakuri is the dangerous subordinate of a pirate Emperor.
      • Both Luffy and Katakuri get their energy from different foods. While Luffy doesn't shy away from anything that looks good, he usually eats lots of meat as they are good sources of protein. Katakuri's food choices are rather unhealthy — his choice of drink, black tea, is very high in caffeine, and he eats lots of donuts and sweets just to get his strength up, essentially overloading on sugar.
      • When it comes to protecting those they love, Katakuri puts on a scary, super-serious appearance all the time (in public, at least) to discourage his foes from hurting his family. Luffy simply deals with whoever tried to hurt, or has hurt his friends, and still allows himself to be goofy and carefree after everything.
      • Both Katakuri and Luffy's powers reflect who they are — Katakuri's powers are based on mochi which reflects how he allowed himself to be molded by his family's standards of him, and how he easily crumbles during his fight with Luffy once he's out of steam and breath. Luffy's powers are based on rubber, representing his unwavering determination and ideals despite being beaten again... and again. This determination is what allows him to finally win against Katakuri after a very brutal battle in the Mirror World.
    • Chiffon and Pez: Chiffon grew up without a father figure in her life at all due to Big Mom seeing her husbands as sperm banks, so she was unable to recognize Pound, her biological father when he went calling for her. Pez, on the other hand, grew up in a household where the father does have say in the child's raising; while Capone Bege is a ruthless mafia don, he is a loving father to Pez. This healthy family dynamic allowed Pez to recognize Pound as kin, laughing when he sees him and cries when Pound is killed by Oven, something that Chiffon finds completely baffling.
    • Capone Bege and Big Mom:
      • Bege is a dark-suited mafia don whose ruthless tendencies softened over time after marrying and having a son. Big Mom is a pink-clad monstrosity whose sweet nature and well-meaning intentions were corrupted by horrible parental figures who treated her as a meal ticket and enabled her worst traits, and having multiple children only resulted in a huge Dysfunctional Family.
      • Bege's Castle-Castle Fruit "gives" people a place to rest, hide, and eat (just don't offend him with Jabba Table Manners). Big Mom's Soul-Soul Fruit "takes" away the souls of people, which she uses to create various homies.
      • Bege is also somewhat of a Benevolent Boss, thanks to Chiffon and Pez's influence, while Big Mom was willing to eat a few of her subordinates and doesn't really give a crap about her own children save for how useful they are to her.
    • The Sweet Commanders and the Monster Trio:
      • Both the Monster Trio and the Sweet Commanders are The Dreaded. However, the Monster Trio is prone to being subject to Underestimating Badassery from others due to being from an upstart pirate crew from the "Worst Generation". The Sweet Commanders have established themselves as the pinnacle of power, creating a mile-wide superiority complex.
      • All members of the Monster Trio are used to being defeated, which gives them the strength to get back up and try again. But having known victory for so long, the thought of defeat is anathema to the Sweet Commanders, so when things start going belly-up for them, they really don't take it well.
      • Despite not being related to each other by blood, the Monster Trio has a strong, familial bond with each other and would move mountains for each other's sake. This is something that the Sweet Commanders, who are all half-siblings, do not have, and explains their poor communication and teamwork.
      • The Monster Trio are regular-sized humans. The Sweet Commanders are ginormously-sized humans thanks to inheriting Big Mom's genes.
      • The Monster Trio, while powerful in their own right, are weak by Emperor standards. The Sweet Commanders, especially Katakuri, embody what the Monster Trio could be if they made themselves stronger.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Capone Bege hopes that his infant son, Pez, will succeed him as The Don in the family business once he's older. To that end, he had been taking him to witness violent events such as the shooting of Pekoms and blasting Oven in the face with an explosive round, though it is with merely good intentions.
  • Forced into Evil: All of the Vinsmoke children, save for Sanji, have been forced to participate in their father's violent, grand schemes for conquest one way or another, thanks to the Lineage Factor experiments that were performed on them. Reiju still retains her emotions, her morals, and her decision and capacity to rebel, but she cannot fully disobey her father's orders thanks to the alterations he made to her mind, which makes her see herself as an accomplice to their atrocities and gives her such utter self-loathing that she's completely fine with Big Mom killing off her family in the wedding. And as monstrous as they are now, Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji had almost all of their ability to feel and understand empathy removed from them in utero against their will, robbing them of any chance to be good people in the first place.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Pedro tells another mink who recognizes him to not bring attention to himself, and is awfully reserved about his past in Totto Land, and his own history. It turns out that he achieved quite a bit of notoriety in Totto Land as a raider and was previously the captain of the Nox Pirates, who was dangerous enough to give even the Big Mom Pirates a bit of trouble.
    • Pedro holds Pudding hostage during their first meeting and puts his sword to her neck, after she reveals a knife in front of the Sanji retrieval party (to cut her cake). Nami convinces him to let her go, and honestly it seemed like a bit of an overreaction at first, given how nice she seemed. It's worth noting that the Vinsmokes had the same idea too when they consider doing it so that they could secure the deal between them and Big Mom. It is until she revealed her true colors, suddenly doing it didn't seem such a bad idea.
    • The very fact that in a manga with a No Hugging, No Kissing policy, a romance plot was actually being played straight. It turns out being a sham all along. However, we do learn that Luffy's rival Capone Bege actually married one of Big Mom's daughters, Charlotte Chiffon, and had a son through her. Just like with how Baby 5 got together with Sai, another unexpected couple appears with Bege and Chiffon.
    • It took more than a decade, but little tidbits such as the "Mr. Prince" alias and being born in the North Blue suddenly become relevant with the reveal that Sanji is a royal Vinsmoke. The Mugiwara Theatre gag comics "Detective Loomes" (Sanji is a Professional Killer), "Family Time" (Sanji has his brother Yonji's hairstyle, but with a fringe), "Red-Hair of Class 3: Sea Time" (Sanji has an eye-obscuring pompadour similar to Niji's except his was curly) do this, too, with Irony sprinkled in as well.
    • Save for Big Mom, all of Lola's immediate family follow a Family Theme Naming one way or another. Most are named after food, drinks, and things related to food such as Oven. The names of Opera's quintuplet brothers don't follow the Edible Theme Naming per se but instead follow a Musical Theme Naming in relation to him. That just leaves Lola who doesn't follow any sort of Family Theme Naming. True to form, she was eventually revealed to be the White Sheep of the family, who ran away to escape an important political marriage that would ally Big Mom with the giants. Most of her family, Big Mom especially, hates her as a result.
    • When Charlotte Moscato confronts Big Mom during her hunger-induced rampage and tries to calm her down, his older and younger siblings warn him to never show fear, lest his soul be taken away. This is exactly what Jimbei does in Chapter 863, his faith in Luffy so strong that Big Mom fails to take his soul.
    • Reiju tells the Straw Hats during their first encounter with Germa 66 that her brother Yonji has not the slightest trace of empathy. Come Chapter 852, she's right — because of Judge's Lineage Factor experiments, all the Vinsmoke quadruplets (save for Sanji) are born with literally no empathy, unable to comprehend the moral depravity of their actions.
    • Little Charlotte Linlin tries to "spank" a bear for fighting with a wolf, only to be horrified when she discovers she killed it with one blow, which gives the readers a sense of how strong she is. Later, readers see exactly how strong — strong enough to kill a giant warrior with her own bare hands.
    • Sanji offhanedly mentions to Judge during their confrontation that he easily defeated Yonji, even without having genetic enhancements, to Judge's surprise. This implied that Sanji's hardships in the Grand Line made him become stronger than this siblings. During the Onigashima War, it is revealed that Sanji had dormant genetic enhancements that only awakened during his fight with Queen (who himself incorporated the Raid Suit tech of the Germa 66 brothers into himself) making him far and away the strongest of the Vinsmoke quadruplets.
    • Cracker got punched by Luffy for telling him that Sanji will marry Pudding and tell his Straw Hat friends to go away. Then in Chapter 843, Sanji does indeed decide to marry Pudding after all, but only because he was blackmailed by his family who threaten him with the death of his loved ones (particularly Zeff) if he defied them. When Luffy and his Sanji Retrieval Team finally catch up with him, Sanji tells his friends to go away to protect them.
    • Katakuri has a lot of foreshadowing surrounding him:
      • His facial scars are always hidden by his scarf, which is rather suspicious. Then there's the fact that Brulee taunts Luffy by describing how perfect Katakuri is in every way, to which the latter responds with exasperated annoyance, and how the chefs make comments about Katakuri being so serious that he treats mealtimes as a duty... which made the perfect buildup for The Reveal that he's secretly a goofy, hedonistic, and gluttonous slob when off-duty, with a scary-looking mouth full of sharp, boar-like teeth.
      • His clothes reflects this, too — his biker-like getup is all badass-looking and spiky, making him look like a No-Nonsense Nemesis, but when no one's looking he shoves down sweets and tea down his mouth like no tomorrow. Meanwhile, his older and younger siblings are affable in public and dress themselves in bright clothing, which hides the nasty sadistic and violent tendencies underneath.
      • His childhood flashbacks showed that Katakuri used to be bullied for having a fanged mouth, and was strong enough to beat up anyone who bothered him about it... but that didn't explain why he was so protective of his sister Brulee, or why Brulee worships the ground he walks on. Come Chapter 902, where it's revealed that Katakuri's protectiveness stemmed from guilt over Brulee being targeted by the bullies he beat up, and that Brulee admires him because he defended her honor after she was scarred.
    • Streusen's the only member of Big Mom's crew to call her "Linlin" without suffering severe repercussions. He was eventually revealed to be a co-founder of the Big Mom Pirates, and The Corrupter for the once-sweet Charlotte Linlin.
    • Snack's defeat serves to prove that even though the Sweet Commanders are intimidating, they are not invincible and in fact can be defeated, but they do take a lot of time and punishment to sufficiently bring them down, and Cracker was the commander to avenge Snack's defeat along with an army of Big Mom's forces. Urouge took down Snack by outlasting him and using his enemy's power against him to bolster his own might. Luffy later defeated Cracker and then Katakuri in much the same way, then he came under attack by the hordes of Big Mom's forces retaliating after his defeat.
    • Pudding has a lot of foreshadowing that pertains to her true nature:
      • In hindsight, her deceitful nature and skill in lying was hinted at in her first appearance. She shows up and effortlessly lies to some police officers in order to get Luffy and Chopper off the hook for eating the chocolate cafe.
      • "Nitro the Jelly" appearing with her in her "debut" was also a clue to the audience that she was the same three-eyed girl seen in chapter 651, as she appeared with her blob pet then too, though his face could not be seen at the time.
      • What's more, she was the one who came up with the plan to have Sanji "meet" the Straw Hats at a rendezvous spot near Big Mom's castle. When the crew got there, Sanji was nowhere to be found, Pudding wasn't, either (deceptively hand-waved in that she couldn't escape the watchful eye of her own family), fake versions of both Sanji and Pudding appeared, and the crew was attacked both by the Wandering Woods, her sister Brulee and not long after, Cracker. To say that was a bit more than a coincidence is an understatement.
      • When she cries in front of Sanji about not wanting his life to become hell, she only cries from her two normal eyes. The eye hidden by her bangs doesn't shed a single tear, proving that she's trained herself very well at crying on cue with only the ordinary eyes. When she's genuinely brought to tears much later, all three eyes, including her mystical third one, shed tears.
      • What's more, when Sanji told Pudding of his own horrid, abusive childhood, Pudding pretends to sympathize with him by crying with only two of her eyes... because compared to Sanji, who had people who supported him during his darkest days, Pudding's own past was much, MUCH worse.
      • The anime added scenes of Big Mom calling her third eye creepy before the wedding and then we cut to Pudding whose eyes are in shadow and is also frowning, which shows that she's still sensitive about her third eye.
    • Chiffon gives Gotti one hell of a scolding for threatening to kill Sanji, pointing out that breaking contract with the Vinsmokes who wanted Sanji back would result in Capone Bege getting killed. We later learn why — she and Bege are married, with an infant son, Pez.
    • Chiffon's identical twin sister, Lola, ran away from her family years ago to escape an Arranged Marriage. She would later follow as well, to flee Totto Land as Big Mom starts destroying it during a hunger rampage, to cut ties with most of her family and escape the bad memories there.
    • Praline explains to Jimbei that no one who tried leaving Totto Land ever succeeded without dire consequences. It's later revealed that Big Mom has a rule for anyone who wants permission to leave: "Life or Leave". She determines this with a roulette wheel that's actually rigged to spell death no matter what. The only people who tried leaving Totto Land in the past are: Pedro (impressed Big Mom enough with his gumption that she let him leave in exchange for 50 years off his life and 100 years off his friend's lifespan) and Lola (ran away on the day of a political marriage, which angered Big Mom enough to want to seek Lola's location so she could send assassins after her daughter). Later, Jimbei decides to leave, leading to Big Mom trying to take his soul, but his utter lack of fear prevented her from doing so. Capone Bege also jumps ship after his assassination plan fails, with his own family and crew inside his body, and that was only because he had help and a Devil Fruit power that allowed him to go as fast as he could manage.
    • It was mentioned in the Zou arc that the Minks will reveal their true power during the night of a full moon. Sure enough, when the full moon appears during a critical moment, the adorable Carrot gains a more powerful and monstrous form when she looks at the full moon, rendering her able to neutralize Daifuku's fleet.
    • Way back in the Arlong arc, Luffy states in his rant to Arlong that one of the things he can't do is cook, which is why he recruited Sanji into his crew. Here, we learn why: Luffy's cooking skills are abysmal, resulting in a significant waste of ingredients and the Straw Hats, weakened by Luffy's "food", begging Sanji to come back.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten:
    • Inverted. Nami is still angry with Sanji for beating up Luffy and breaking her heart, but she is willing to put it behind her for the sake of bringing him back to their crew.
    • When Jarl is persuaded by Mother Carmel not to kill Big Mom for killing Jorl, Jarl ultimately decides to spare and forgive her, but he makes sure to let everyone on Elbaf know what Big Mom had done.
  • Formerly Fit: The SBS section of volume 86 revealed that Big Mom used to be very slim by age 28, but gradually gained weight in the intervening forty years, though she still had enough attractiveness to become a Big Beautiful Woman. By the present day, her poor eating habits had led her to become an obese monstrosity of a woman. As of Chapter 889, her food-crazed rampage has been going for so long that she's starting to loose that added weight, which hasn't gone without comment from other characters.
  • Four Is Death:
    • The Sweet Commanders used to be numbered four, but Snack, the fourth commander in question, was defeated by Urouge and stripped of his position, and very late into the arc, Snack finally makes his appearance, though his position of authority is now equal to that of any other common Charlotte Family members.
    • Subverted with Charlotte Moscato, Big Mom's 16th son. When he first appeared, he had a major part of his soul ripped out by his own mother for defying her, and people thought that was the end of him... until he reappears again looking fine in Chapter 901, if a little banged up.
    • Charlotte Opera is one of five warty quintuplet brothers, yet while four of them are identical to each other, he stands out as the one with the unusual whipped cream body and strange abilities that are likely from a Devil Fruit. He is dealt the same fate as Moscato, though unlike his brother, he doesn't survive.
    • While Sanji is the third of male fraternal quadruplets, biologically he's the fourth Vinsmoke child. His mother died to protect him and his brothers from Judge and preserve their empathy (though only Sanji was affected, for some reason), and while still a child, he endured not one, but two near-death experiences via starvation, the first being when Judge left him in the dungeons to rot.
  • Freakiness Shame:
    • A quick flashback shows that when Pudding was a child, she was actually ostracized by her siblings and the children in Totto Land for being three-eyed. Even Big Mom told her that it's weird and she had to cover it, to the point that she went crazy over it. When she reveals her third eye to Sanji in order to shock him, he instead finds it beautiful, which causes her to fall down to her knees and crying because of his praise.
    • Katakuri is a double-subversion; as a child, he was bullied for having an ugly fanged mouth, but he didn't care since he could just beat up his bullies. When Brulee was attacked and scarred out of spite, Katakuri blamed himself to the point where he saw almost everything about himself as a weakness, including his mouth. So he put up a facade where he's a stoic, ruthless warrior and covered up his mouth at all times so his family wouldn't be hurt again.
  • Freaky Is Cool: Unsurprisingly, Sanji thinks Pudding is beautiful even with a Third Eye. The surprise twist is Pudding having a tearful Villainous Breakdown because of Sanji's positive reception to her supposedly ugly third eye.
  • Freudian Excuse:
    • Charlotte Pudding was severely ridiculed by both her own mother and the children of Totto Land for being three-eyed, to the point of completely snapping. Her past influenced her to become the sadistic psychopath she is as an adult; when she receives her first compliment about her Third Eye from Sanji, she is so moved by his kindness that she breaks down sobbing.
    • Vinsmoke quadruplet brothers Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji became monstrous assholes as adults because their father, Judge, experimented on them in utero and psychologically altered them to have literally no empathy at all. This led to the death of their mother, Sora, when she tried saving them all but only succeeded with their brother, Sanji, and died for her troubles. Combined with Judge's terrible parenting and incredibly lax restrictions towards their behavior, it's no wonder they became so cruel and bratty.
    • Big Mom keeps treating her various wedding tea parties as if they were her birthday, because the happiest moment of her life was her sixth birthday, when Mother Carmel held a tea party and offered her a gigantic cake made of croquembouche, which Big Mom thoroughly enjoyed.
    • Relating to above, Big Mom having hybrid children with many husbands from different races, and wanting to make everyone (including her own family) live under one roof stemmed from Mother Carmel's (fake) pacifist teachings, and living in an orphanage where all the orphans she lived with came from different races.
    • Charlotte Katakuri acts like a stoic, badass warrior who makes it a point not to underestimate his enemies because when he was a child, he was confident that he could beat up anyone who made fun of his freakish mouth. This led to his younger sister Brulee being attacked and horribly scarred by his childhood bullies out of spite. Katakuri blamed himself for his carelessness and resolved to protect his family through sheer reputation. Part of his Character Development was learning how to be himself again and not run himself ragged trying to take on the heavy lifting for his family all at once.
    • Sanji's anger at Usopp's Heroic Self-Deprecation and his desire to become an infamous pirate stems from his abusive childhood, where his father and brothers treated him like he was worth nothing because of his inability to become strong when he was younger.
  • From Bad to Worse: While the Straw Hats are able to get Big Mom to cry by breaking Mother Carmel's portrait, Big Mom's screams ruin the weapons they were supposed to kill her with, as well as shatter Brulee's mirror, their only escape route. Everyone is forced to hide inside Bege's "Big Father" castle, where they are essentially surrounded and held under siege. Then Katakuri clogged his cannons with his mochi, Perospero holds the castle down with his candy, and then Big Mom herself regains awareness of her surroundings and comes a-knocking...
  • Funny Background Event: During Luffy's Wedding Smashers plan in Chapter 863, two Luffy clones can be seen harassing the guests, with one trying to steal a guest's crown.

    G
  • Gambit Pileup: The tea party is one. The Vinsmokes and Big Mom Pirates intended to stab each other in the back from square one. The Vinsmokes planned to use Pudding as a hostage to control Big Mom's forces, while the Big Mom Pirates intended to kill them all off and steal their cloning tech. To top it off, Capone Bege intends to assassinate Big Mom during the festivities, and the Straw Hats aid him since Big Mom being assassinated is in their interest (as it would resolve Sanji's situation). Sanji himself outright said the whole thing was knee-deep in a conspiracy.
    • Interestingly, nobody gets exactly what they want. The Big Mom pirates fail to kill any of the Vinsmokes or get their cloning tech, the Vinsmokes plan was doomed to fail from the start, and the assassination attempt on Big Mom fails spectacularly.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man:
    • Upon Reiju's revelation that their mother died so her sons can be normal, Sanji (the only one who ended up normal) thought that her death is his fault. Reiju assures him that their mother had no regrets and that he is the proof that her sacrifice was not in vain. She also tells him to make up his mind and escape with his friends and worry about other things later.
    • When Sanji once again tells Luffy that he plans to buy the Straw Hats time to escape, the latter snaps and pummels him in the face while demanding him to say how he really feels.
  • Genetic Engineering Is the New Nuke: Judge stated that his children are a result of extensive genetic modifications with seemingly limitless potential, never bound to normal human limitations. It explains how Niji, Ichiji, and Reiju have special abilities despite not being Devil Fruit users, and how Niji, Ichiji, and Yonji can fight without being hampered by certain emotions like fear. This is later shown to be a bad idea, as genetically robbing people of empathy and giving them superpowers to win wars would turn them into irredeemable monsters who only know how to kill and cause suffering wherever they go. Reiju, as the only Vinsmoke child alongside Sanji to still have empathy, ends up so distraught over her family's atrocities that she wants to die to atone for her involvement in them.
  • Genie in a Bottle: Charlotte Daifuku's Lamp-Lamp Devil Fruit (Hoya Hoya no Mi) turns him into a walking genie's lamp. He can summon a powerful, dark-skinned genie to fight for him by rubbing any part of his body.
  • Gilded Cage:
    • What living in Big Mom's territory essentially is like. People will never go hungry again as they are literally surrounded by food (their homes are also made of food!) and everyone is happy and left wanting for nothing. But the price is paying a soul tax with your own lifespan every six months or so, meaning you slowly die just for living there. Most of Big Mom's children just follow her orders, as defying her usually invites trouble. Oh, and when Big Mom says you have to get married, you have to get married, no ifs, ands, or buts. The only child of Big Mom who managed to escape Totto Land is Lola of the Rolling Pirates, and it resulted in Big Mom trying to find her location so she can send assassins after her. Also, if you're a powerful and/or resourceful person allied with Big Mom in some way, you can't leave without risking dismemberment or death.
    • This is Sanji's treatment when captured by the Big Mom Pirates and turned over to Germa 66. He has luxurious accommodations befitting his status as a prince, but nobody is hiding the fact that he's a prisoner.
  • Gingerbread House: More like Gingerbread Island, as Cacao Island's buildings are made out of mostly chocolate, some of which can be eaten freely at anyone's leisure. Pekoms and the local police chief also imply that the other neighboring islands are made of other kinds of treats; this is later shown in Nuts Island, where all the buildings are made of peanut shells or similar materials.
  • Girlish Pigtails:
    • Big Mom had a pair of curly bunches on both sides of her head as a kid.
    • Two of Big Mom's daughters, Pudding and Chiffon, each wear pigtails, with Pudding's being much longer.
    • Charlotte Poire also wears pigtails.
  • Glasgow Grin:
    • Subverted with Charlotte Poire; she does have a wide grin full of sharp teeth, but the ends of her mouth happen to land right where the stitches of her panda hat are, making her mouth appear like this.
    • Played straight with Katakuri, who has a wide pelican eel-like mouth that he could extend with his mochi powers. On both ends of his mouth are long stitch scars; even with his scarf covering his mouth, the scars are indicators that he has this kind of mouth.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Big Mom's scream is so loud that it shatters the mirror that Caesar was carrying to pieces and the allied forces' only means of escape along with it.
  • The Glomp: Just like she did to the Straw Hats in the previous arc, Carrot glomps Pudding, proclaiming that she likes Sanji too.
  • Glorified Sperm Donor: As far as Big Mom is concerned, her "husbands" have no blood relations with her family and are only good for giving her strong children. It's a sentiment that's shared by some of her children as well, such as Cracker. It's implied that this viewpoint on fathers is what led to the Charlotte children's collective dysfunction, as they only had Big Mom to rely on.
  • Goal in Life:
    • Big Mom wants to create a utopia where everyone lives under one roof and everyone can see "eye-to-eye", which was inspired by Mother Carmel's teachings and Streusen's influence. However, because she was a child when she had that dream, she interpreted the "eye-to-eye" part as literally making everyone gigantic as her, which was why she commissioned Caesar Clown to make a giantification formula.
    • Judge wants to reconquer North Blue after he lost the territory for unknown reasons, which was why he tried turning his own children into strong, powerful warriors and military commanders that would lead Germa 66 to greatness.
  • Gonk: Zigzagged.
    • While Big Mom is currently a grossly obese monstrosity of a woman, Oda revealed in an SBS issue that in her prime, she was rather beautiful. This, of course, changed once her eating habits got the best of her.
    • Most of Big Mom's children vary on how attractive they are. Some of them, especially the daughters, are drop-dead gorgeous despite them being middle-aged, while the others seem to have lucked out on the gene pool. Cracker double-subverts it as he's not pretty bad-looking himself when not donning his Biscuit Soldier armor; while Pudding and Katakuri are considered in-universe examples because their "deformities" makes them both ugly to their family, but they are considered beautiful by the readers. Identical twin sisters Chiffon, Lola, and their father Pound are also ugly-looking, though they are on the heroes' side.
    • Downplayed with Vinsmoke Judge; while he isn't extremely ugly, he is hard-eyed and brutish-looking. His deceased wife and children are drop-dead gorgeous in comparison.
  • Good Parents:
    • Sora was extremely encouraging of Sanji's cooking aspirations and ate his then badly-done meals exclusively until she died. Chapter 852 reveals that she specifically drank a drug in secret to ensure that her children, specifically her then-unborn fraternal quadruplet sons, wouldn't become emotionless monsters and weapons as Judge wanted, at the cost of her health and eventually her own life — while it worked on Sanji, it failed with his brothers, who only have a tiny shred of humanity left.
    • Zeff, despite being hard-handed, insulting, and borderline-abusive, turned Sanji into the chivalrous, hard-kicking Supreme Chef he is today; Sanji sees and acknowledges him as a better father figure than Judge.
    • Charlotte Chiffon and Capone Bege are Happily Married and raising Pez the best way they could, which is a far cry from Big Mom. Even though Bege does take Pez to see violent things that babies should not see, it is only with good intentions as Bege wants his son to succeed him.
    • Subverted harshly with Mother Carmel. She ran an orphanage for displaced children from all backgrounds and took in Big Mom after she was dumped on Elbaf by her birth parents. In reality, she is a child slaver who sells the orphans to the highest bidders (including World Government and World Nobles) and puts on a mask of compassion and forgiveness to get the children to trust her. Big Mom herself never knew this and only saw the loving mask Carmel put on, to the point where she keeps a portrait of Mother Carmel and becomes her most happiest whenever she sees it. Asking about Mother Carmel is a complete no-no.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Pound does so as he watches Chiffon and Pez sail away safely after he prevents Oven from stopping Bege's ship.
  • Good Powers, Bad People: Usually, having candy/food-related powers wouldn't be such a bad thing; in fact, they would be an aspiring chef's dream come true. But when you give them to a group of murderous, backstabbing psychopaths like the Charlotte family...
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: "Demon Lady" Amande carries a cigarette in her mouth, and is an evil swordswoman working for Big Mom. Her younger quadruplet sisters Charlotte Hachée and Charlotte Effilée also have cigs in their mouths.
  • Gone Horribly Right:
    • Bege's plan to make Big Mom vulnerable by pushing her Trauma Button worked like a charm. However, her hysterical screams are so loud that the sound waves destroy the assassination weapons and the escape route!
    • Judge's plans to turn his children into emotionless Tykebombs blows up in his face quite horribly when all of the Vinsmokes are rounded up, trapped in candy, and prepared for execution. When Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji decide to Face Death with Dignity, Judge is disturbed and shouts at them for doing so, when he was the one who made them that way. Reiju privately lampshades the trope in a "Serves you right" manner.
  • Gory Discretion Shot:
    • We're refrained from seeing just what happened to everyone at Big Mom's 6th birthday... Although, judging by the distant scream and the giant that got scared when he witnessed it, it's likely not pretty.
    • What happened to the four kings of the North Blue in the anime — after they were ousted from power, they beg Judge for mercy. Judge's response is to slice off their heads; we never see it happening, as lightning flashes at the exact moment, but Judge's spear is dripping with blood afterward.
    • Similarly to Judge's example, Oven decapitates Pound for attacking him; the only clues are something flying into the air in one panel as Bege's ship departs for the sea, and Oven's spear dripping with blood.
  • Gray Rain of Depression:
    • Sanji discovers, in the worst way possible, that the sweet and adorable Pudding is a sadistic Bitch in Sheep's Clothing all along. Coincidentally, a heavy rainstorm was happening at the same time. He's so upset that the very next chapter has him trying to smoke but can't light up his cigs due to standing in the rain.
    • Similarly, it's also pouring when Pudding decides to go out to the balcony of her room to reminiscence about how Big Mom treated her like an obedient doll, and how she felt hurt and lonely over her beloved older sister Lola running away from home. Her Hidden Eyes and the rain pouring down her face makes it look like she's crying.
  • Greaser Delinquents: Parodied with Charlotte Anglaise, who dresses up like one, speaks like one, and acts like one. He has a large and cute caterpillar for a motorcycle. And his idea of rebellion is not brushing his teeth before bed. Due to his age, he may be trying too hard.
