    A
  • Abusive Parents:
    • Judge's reaction to Sanji's pleas for help after his brothers beat him up is to tell him right to his face that he has no reason to help him or raise him, since he's a disgrace to his family name. His daughter and eldest child, Reiju, who otherwise supports his activities, is secretly terrified of him and only plays along for fear of becoming a target of abuse as well. He's also the reason why his other sons are monstrous assholes — he experimented on them in utero and surgically removed their ability to feel and understand empathy, thus robbing them of all chances to become good people, so he can turn them into his weapons of conquest (only Sanji escaped this fate, thanks to Sora), and after they were born, he hammered in them his beliefs of Might Makes Right and what a "proper" royal should be, and enabled their incredibly bratty behaviors until they became Royal Brats of the highest degree.
    • Played for Laughs with Zeff as seen in Sanji's flashback, in that he's very strict towards Sanji about ethics and, in particular, about not hitting women. It also shows that Zeff was being Cruel to Be Kind as he, as Sanji's "father", wanted Sanji to be a good man overall.
    • Big Mom herself. She regularly hooks her children on Arranged Marriages without consent from their part. Her hunger-induced rampage has resulted in the death of one of her sons who tried to calm her down, and she was mentioned to be so controlling over her children that most of them completely gave up on defying her to follow their own dreams. She allowed one of her young daughters, Charlotte Anana, to become a sadistic psychopath who loves tormenting her siblings, and is not fazed in the slightest when one of said siblings expressed a wish to kill Anana for being so rotten. Big Mom also despises Lola, who ran away from a very important political marriage that would allow Big Mom to defeat the other Emperors and become the Pirate King, and wants to assassinate Lola for refusing to go along with her plans. And because Lola ran away, Big Mom frequently physically abused Chiffon just for being her identical twin, which eventually causes her to disown her mother and work with Bege in killing her. And despite Big Mom pampering Pudding a lot, it's more because Pudding's more of a potential tool (of reading Poneglyphs) than her daughter, and it's revealed that she mistreated her too, because when Pudding was a child, Big Mom thought her daughter's Third Eye was repulsive and ugly, and never once protected her from the vicious bullying she received from the other children of Totto Land. This resulted in Pudding, who Used to Be a Sweet Kid, snapping and becoming completely psychopathic from the torment, to the point where she has a Villainous Breakdown years later after Sanji became the only person to say her third eye looked "beautiful". And when Katakuri, her most powerful child and Sweet Commander, prevented Luffy from going after her, Big Mom angrily calls him a "lowly child" for presuming her to be defenseless.
      • Ultimately, it's what bit her in the ass in the end — Pudding, who was bullied all her life for being three-eyed, fell in love with the first person who gave her a genuine compliment (Sanji), and proceeded to help him and his friends escape Totto Land. And Chiffon, after years of abuse for looking like her runaway twin sister, sided with her husband Bege, seeing him and his crew as her "family" and giving them lots of inside information for their assassination plot. There's also Charlotte Praline, who, though we don't see a backstory for her, was more than willing to betray her mother and leave her abusive family for her new husband Aladine with barely a blink, and proved to be important in scrambling the Big Mom Pirates' entire surveillance network.
    • "Holy Mother" Carmel was one as well, both to Big Mom and the other children in her orphanage. While she never mistreated the orphans directly, she pretended to love them and let them do whatever they wanted without repercussions, at least in the case of Big Mom, who never experienced proper discipline or had the chance to learn the consequences of her actions. She only saw her charges as cargo to sell, either to the black market or to the World Government. Neither the children or Big Mom herself were aware of this.
    • Totto Land's head cook, Streusen, would later follow Carmel's example after Big Mom lost her "family" at age 6. In an eerie Call-Back to Doflamingo and his four Executives, Streusen saw potential in Big Mom's strength and power, filled her head with grand dreams, and enabled her worst traits until she became the utter monster who ruled Totto Land.
  • Abnormal Ammo: Charlotte Katakuri shoots jellybeans, throwing them with so much power that he can pierce a man's skull and kill him as though he just shot him with a gun.
  • Accidental Truth: After losing track of the Straw Hats, a food-craving Big Mom gets distracted and goes towards Nuts Island. While rampaging, Perospero tries to get her to stop, telling her the Straw Hats aren't even there. Then, Luffy has the bad luck to leap out of the Mirror-World on Nuts Island, right in front of Big Mom.
  • Act of True Love: Charlotte Praline fully intends to follow her husband Aladdin and the Sun Pirates when he decides to break away from Big Mom's crew, despite knowing that no one survived doing that. She later makes good on her words in Chapter 860 as they leave for real... after tying Pekoms to a rock so he wouldn't squeal to Big Mom.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Several things were expanded on in this arc, including:
    • Before Moscato confronted the hungry, rampaging Big Mom, he tried to evacuate as many citizens as possible while Sweet City was being destroyed, and saved a little girl from being trampled by Big Mom. Those same citizens he saved would later mourn his (supposed) death after Moscato had 40 years of his lifespan stolen from him.
    • Luffy and the Straw Hats are shown working to catch the fish that would later give Luffy severe food poisoning upon consumption, leading up to the encounter with Germa 66.
    • The civil war on Broccoli Island that Vinsmoke Ichiji and Niji had just put an end to in the manga is expanded a bit more with some additional scenes in the anime. These being Ichiji and Niji flew onto the island with their high-tech boots, negotiated a fee with Broccoli Island's leaders, and led a bloody fight against the rebels with their cloned Germa 66 soldiers up until Ichiji shoots the last rebel dead.
    • Sanji's initial clash with Yonji gets an extra little snippet where Yonji is revealed to be an adept kickfighter in his own right and able to counter Sanji's own Black Leg Style.
    • Generalissimo Vinsmoke Judge is shown executing the four kings in a flashback and then dramatically emerging onto the scene to greet Sanji rather than abruptly and unannounced like in the manga, which surprisingly downplayed his debut.
    • The fight with Charlotte Cracker included a scene where Luffy and Nami, riding on King Baum, were pursued by Cracker and his Biscuit Soldiers. When he finally corners them and sees King Baum (unwillingly) helping the Straw Hats, he Face Palms. Cracker then punishes King Baum by lopping off the top of his head, which was just a funny off-screen event in the manga. Nami then decides to buy time for Luffy to recover by fighting Cracker herself. Nami doesn't last long, but she bought enough time for Luffy to recover and save her.
    • We see Vinsmoke Sora is sitting in bed sick and she is miserable, obviously regretting her Heroic Suicide in motion. Then Sanji stops by and she comes back to life once more.
    • The vicious beatings little Sanji would often receive from his older/younger quadruplet brothers were shown and full, making their scenes more horrifying and sad to watch.
    • Brook's duel against Big Mom is shown completely in full in the anime, during which we see him wound Prometheus, attempt to Speed Blitz Big Mom and run her through with his sword, and use his Soul King powers in an attempt to destroy her homies. Napoleon's sword form also appears much earlier than in the manga, to give it more spotlight and show Napoleon is just as dangerous as his partners and how Brook got his face cracked up. Finally, the battle is extended to highlight Big Mom's tough skin and the fact Brook can't even penetrate it with his cane sword and bounces right off, how Brook finally ran out of stamina and got caught, and a moment where he regains a small bit of energy and is able to slash Prometheus's left cheek open, explaining how Prometheus got wounded and was being bandaged in the chapter following Brook's capture.
    • Scenes are included where Sora was taken away to undergo surgery, then drank a toxin and collapsed. She also has shoes on, whereas she didn't in the manga and it seemed like she had collapsed out of bed. When Reiju comes to visit Sora, Sora calls her over for a hug and then apologizes that it doesn't look like she will make it to see her children grow up, insinuating that she's very close to death. The moment shortly after she is laid to rest is also shown, revealing only Sanji mourns her while his emotionless brothers beat on him for crying and Judge admonishes the memory of his disobedient wife. Reiju later comes back to the grave to cry in private during a rainstorm, revealing she's also hurting from losing her mother.
    • After Luffy and Nami are freed by Jimbei from their book prison, the anime expanded upon Luffy's search for Sanji in the Whole Cake Chateau. This prominently were scenes which involved Luffy fighting Charlotte Cadenza and then later Charlotte Cabaletta. The fight with Cadenza though is both an Adaptation Expansion and a change. In the manga, it was Charlotte Counter rather than Cadenza that Luffy actually confronted however all that was shown of that confrontation was Luffy choking Counter. The anime while exchanging Counter for Cadenza extends this encounter into a full fight that ends with the very chocking scene.
    • More of the fight between the Vinsmokes and the Big Mom pirates are shown. Such scenes are:
      • Ichiji vs Katakuri.
      • Reiju vs Smoothie: Smoothie is busy wringing Nami's fluids out of her body when Reiju sneaks up behind her, her body glowing purple with her poison powers. Reiju proceeds to kick Smoothie, who successfully blocks the attack, but gets her arm poisoned and makes her let go of Nami.
      • Yonji vs. Daifuku: Yonji first attacks a large-sized combatant of the Big Mom Pirates, then uses his Super-Strength to grab him. He spins around so fast that he throws the combatant into Daifuku's genie. Yonji uses the opportunity to punch the genie into the ground.
      • Judge, Niji, and Yonji vs. Big Mom herself.
    • The anime expands the fight scene between the Big Mom Pirates vs. Germa 66. In the manga, the Vinsmoke siblings are seen standing triumphantly over Charlotte Nusstorte's forces, implying a Curb-Stomp Battle. In Episodes 844 and 845, what happened is shown in full: Nusstorte and his forces invade the supposedly deserted Germa kingdom to retrieve the cloning technology, only for the Vinsmoke siblings to emerge and launch a surprise Curb-Stomp Battle. This was happening while the Straw Hats were running away from Big Mom. New additions to this scene are Nusstorte's brothers Basskarte and Dosmarche, who join in on the invasion only to end up defeated by Yonji and Ichiji, respectively. Also, in the anime, Nusstorte did manage to put up a bit of a fight and give Niji some trouble before he ultimately fell.
    • In the manga, there's a scene where Charlotte Anglaise reports to his older siblings about an "intruder" (Brook) in the Treasure Room. In the anime, after Anglaise leaves, Mont-d'Or is troubled by the news and expresses worry about more Straw Hats invading Totto Land, possibly ruining the wedding. Perospero assures his brother that Baron Tamago is on guard duty, but Mont-d'Or isn't convinced.
    • Episode 791 expands on Caesar Clown's flashback which shows his reasons why he didn't make Big Mom's giantification formula. When Caesar recalls reading the news of Doflamingo's defeat in the Dressrosa arc, he turned white with shock and literally crumbled to pieces, as it meant he wouldn't have Doflamingo's protection anymore. The episode also shows Caesar making various facial expressions other than his lewd one shown in the manga, until Big Mom asks him why he's making a "face performance".
    • Episode 859 expands the chapter that introduced Amande's territory, Nuts Island.
      • Upon hearing that a hunger-crazed Big Mom is heading for Nuts Island, Amande orders an island-wide evacuation of the civilian populace, only for Big Mom to unexpectedly arrive and wreak havoc.
      • While fleeing Katakuri, Luffy ends up in a random house with Brulee, only for the roof to be pulled apart and reveal the rampaging Big Mom. Perospero and Amande discover Luffy's presence and try to rescue Brulee from him, with Amande attempting to attack Luffy twice, but they fail.
      • In addition, Amande's quadruplet sisters Mondée and Effilée join in the fight, and try to keep Luffy from escaping with Brulee, who ends up being used as a Human Shield to protect Luffy from being hit.
  • Affably Evil:
    • Charlotte Perospero is quite indulging with the children who live on Big Mom's islands, letting them eat anything he makes with his candy powers... when he's not turning people into candy.
    • Charlotte Smoothie is rather polite, easygoing, and friendly in casual conversation... even as she uses her powers to forcefully drain the life from a helpless giraffe and woman just to make "juice" for some tea party guests.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: In the anime version of Pudding's childhood flashback of Lola, she received a pat on the head as Lola assured her that Big Mom would understand her decision to leave home on her wedding day.
  • Alice Allusion: The arc has multiple allusions to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with some of which seemingly being more of direct Shout-Outs to the 1951 animated Disney film. These include:
    • First and foremost is Carrot, the white rabbit mink traveling with Luffy's group. Along with the obvious allusion of being a white rabbit, she has a habit of calling new places she experiences as being "like a Wonderland".
    • Big Mom is a selfish and insane queen who does what she wants with very little regard for anyone, namely the citizens she rules over. She's essentially the Queen of Hearts/the Red Queen. One of the choices of things she would even ask for in exchange for leaving her crew is decapitation. She also has a fondness for tea parties which are treated as Serious Business as far as anyone is concerned in regards to her. It's a pastime that alludes to that of the Mad Hatter's when seen in conjunction with the arc's other Alice allusions.
    • A number of Big Mom's soldiers wear chess piece-based outfits making them very reminiscent of the chess pieces from Through the Looking-Glass. Additionally, the way their heads are designed resemble that of the card guards from the 1951 Disney film.
    • As one of the weirdest places throughout the One Piece series, Totto Land with its various islands is The Wonderland of One Piece. The various environments and buildings of Totto Land are made out of confectionery; its inhabitants are made up of multiple races making them look like a mixed menagerie; and there are multiple Animate Inanimate Objects running around thanks to Big Mom's Devil Fruit powers. It's just one whole big bizarre setting that can be best comparable to Wonderland, something which is stated via Carrot's labeling it being "like a Wonderland".
    • Some of the Animate Inanimate Objects running around bring to mind the talking Doorknob from the 1951 Disney film.
    • The Seducing Woods that Luffy and those with him are lured into bring to mind the Tulgey Wood that's mentioned in the Jabberwocky poem from Through the Looking-Glass and explored by Alice in the 1951 Disney film.
    • Among Brulee's mirror based powers granted by her Devil Fruit is the ability to allow her or others to travel through mirrors and into a twisty-looking Mirror World.
  • All for Nothing:
    • This is the final step of Sanji's Trauma Conga Line, when it was revealed that Pudding was actually Evil All Along and the entire wedding was just a ploy to execute the Vinsmoke Family, meaning that everything he had done: leaving the crew, resubmitting himself to his family's abuse, and treating Luffy and Nami like trash, was for nothing.
    • Same goes for Sanji's family, who tried everything to cow their estranged child into submission, even blackmailing him with Zeff's safety and putting (fake) explosive bracelets on him knowing that even if Sanji were to survive, the one thing he enjoyed (cooking) would be rendered impossible without hands. At the end of the day, all their efforts are for naught, and they end up being rounded up for slaughter by the Charlotte family. Fortunately for them, Sanji's too compassionate to let them die.
    • After serving under Big Mom for an entire year, working his way up the ranks to be in a position to kill her, and coming up with a clever yet convoluted plan to pull it off, Bege's entire assassination plan backfires: Big Mom's scream inadvertently destroys his missile launchers, his escape plan is ruined, and his treachery has been exposed to the Big Mom Pirates.
    • Averted with Pedro's Heroic Sacrifice to take down Perospero. Even though Perospero survived the explosion with only a missing arm, Pedro's sacrifice freed Chopper, Brook, and the Thousand Sunny from Perospero's candy and gave the Straw Hats an opening to escape, so it doesn't count as a Senseless Sacrifice.
  • All Men Are Perverts:
    • Caesar Clown actually spent Big Mom's funds on alcohol and groupies instead of the Giantification Formula she wanted, which he recalled with a lewd expression on his face.
    • Sanji's brothers are revealed to have the same perverted tendencies. The sight of Nami makes them go completely gaga, complete with "Heart Eyes". They later plan to go to Big Mom to request having Nami, after she is captured, as their pleasure slave, unaware that she already escaped with Luffy.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us:
    • Charlotte Katakuri, his eldest brother Perospero, and Big Mom's soldiers enter the Thousand Sunny before Luffy can reach it. Fortunately, when the Straw Hats do arrive, they manage to get the offending parties off the Sunny, with Luffy trapping both himself and Katakuri in Brulee's Mirror World.
    • Later on, Big Mom herself manages to catch up the Sunny and manages to jump onto the deck. At first, Jimbei comments they may be forced to abandon ship, but luckily, they're able to force her off.
  • Alternate Character Reading: The kanji for Totto Land (万国) means "all nations", which reflects Big Mom's dream of having a family of all kinds of people in the world.
  • Always Identical Twins: The Charlotte Family has the largest number of twins in One Piece because of Big Mom's potent fertility. The trope is played straight and subverted at the same time, as the number of fraternal twins outnumber the identical ones, which is Truth in Television where twins are likely to be fraternal.
    • According to SBS 88, Charlotte Galette is revealed to have a younger twin sister, Charlotte Poire, the panda hat-wearing girl who could be seen attending the wedding in Chapter 860. It's subverted in that, aside from both having magenta-colored hair and wearing fur-related outfits, they're fraternal twins who look nothing alike.
    • Charlotte Chiffon and Lola are identical twin sisters. They resemble each other so much that after Lola ran away from an important political marriage with Prince Loki of Elbaf, Big Mom tried passing Chiffon off as Lola. However, the deception was exposed, resulting in Chiffon taking the full brunt of Big Mom's anger towards Lola every time they crossed paths.
    • Subverted with Charlotte Mascarpone and Charlotte Joscarpone, who are fraternal twins. Despite them having purple hair and similar names (with Joscarpone's name being the female version of her brother's in Japanese), being Snakeneck-human hybrids, and are always seen together, they are different enough that they can be told apart.
    • Charlotte Praline and Charlotte Prim are also revealed to be twin sisters, though they are fraternal since, despite both of them being Merman-human hybrids, they have different hairstyles, clothes, and have different animals for lower bodies (Praline is a hammerhead shark mermaid, Prim is an octopus mermaid).
    • Charlottes Dolce and Dragee, Big Mom's youngest sons, are confirmed to be identical twin brothers who greatly resemble each other and have a shared fondness for balloons.
    • Subverted with Charlotte Snack and Charlotte Bavarois, who are fraternal twins. The most prominent examples would be their hair color and nose shapes — Snack is black-haired and has a Gag Nose, while Bavarois is blonde with a larger, yet flatter nose.
    • Subverted with Charlotte Saint-Marc and Charlotte Basans, who are fraternal twins. Saint-Marc is a hulking behemoth that towers over his brother and is dressed like a knight, while his smaller brother simply wears a white hoodie and has hair/dreadlocks(?) that resemble multiple antlers.
  • Amazon Chaser: Although he was already attracted to Nami from the beginning, seeing her slap Sanji hard made Vinsmoke Yonji decide she's definitely worth pursuing. His older brother, Niji, agrees.
  • Amusing Injuries:
    • After fighting with Sanji and being kicked hard in the face, Yonji's head got "dented" so badly that only a press machine successfully restored it back to normal. He's fine afterwards.
    • Subverted for drama: After Sanji is beaten up by his brothers, Reiju gives him a mask that forces his face back into shape without actually healing it. Sanji later removes the mask while confessing to Pudding how terrible it has been to be forced to reunite with his hated family and betray his close friends.
    • In another subversion, Luffy loses a tooth when Sanji pulls a Break His Heart to Save Him gambit on him and the damage sticks for a while. He later finds and drinks some milk in Bege's hideout, which instantly heals his tooth gap. It's hilariously lampshaded by one of Bege's men.
Firetank henchman: What the hell is wrong with your bodies?!
  • And I Must Scream: One of the side-effects of being trapped in Mont-d'Or's World of Books illusion is while you'll never age and still retain awareness of your surroundings, you're unable to escape by yourself for very long, if not for eternity.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Big Mom can use her Soul-Soul Fruit powers to create living objects called Homies. She fills the entire nation of Tottoland with them, from talking flowers, furniture, food, a singing ship with living doors, and even the sun and cloud. Its power can also turn an animal into a Funny Animal.
  • Anime Hair:
    • Charlotte Brulee's long hair sticks out in four different directions, like tree branches. Her younger sister, Charlotte Broyé, has the same hairstyle but shorter.
    • Some of Praline's bun extend outwards horizontally both ways, just like the appendages of a hammerhead shark.
    • Part of Caesar Clown's Paper-Thin Disguise after joining Bege's crew is sticking his hair up. It makes him look like he touched an exposed electrical wire.
    • Big Mom's fourth son, Charlotte Oven, has his hair and beard shaped like an anchor, as if he has an anchor for a head with his face on it.
    • The elder Vinsmoke quadruplet brothers, Ichiji and Niji, have ridiculous hairstyles. The former has two large, gravity-defying spikes in his hair, while the latter has an exaggerated downwards pompadour that resembles pre-Time Skip!Franky's hair once his Cola reserves run out. Yonji on the other hand just has his hair slicked back into a horizontal cowlick that stays no matter what happens to him. Justified in their case, as their odd hairstyles are the result of Judge experimenting on them in utero.
    • Charlotte Snack, a former Sweet Commander, has his hair styled into dango, skewered sweet rice dumplings.
    • Twin brothers Charlotte Dolce and Charlotte Dragée have brown pointy hair that look like popped balloons.
    • Charlotte Basskarte has long orange hair that flares upwards, like fire.
    • Charlotte Mozart has long dark brown hair, some of which are (somehow) shaped into long braids that hang from her head like a jester's hat. Part of these braids are colored pink.
    • Charlotte Cornstarch has golden hair that sticks upward and spreads out, resembling a fountain spout.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling:
    • Vinsmoke Yonji is an exaggerated example for Sanji, to horrific extremes. Because Judge both psychologically altered him in utero and hammered into him his social darwinist policies, Yonji literally couldn't feel or understand the same benevolent emotions that Sanji feels, and viciously bullied him for both being a "dud" and refusing to act like a "proper" prince. He is often joined by Ichiji and Niji, who also feel the same way about Sanji.
    • On the flip side, Sanji is seen as one by his eldest brothers. Not because there wasn't anything actually wrong with him, but as the products of Judge's Lineage Factor experiments, they think Sanji's noble and heroic qualities (which he shouldn't have in the first place) are rather irritating.
    • One of the reasons why Reiju became a Stepford Smiler so early in childhood is because she feared her younger enhanced brothers not named "Sanji" will turn on her and abuse her if they even had an inkling of her true personality.
    • Charlottes Anana and Pudding are zigzagged examples. While some of her siblings hate Anana's psychotic behavior and bullying to the point of wanting her dead, others loved her. And Pudding was loved also, especially by her older sisters Chiffon and Lola, despite her duplicitous nature and being treated like a freak for being three-eyed as a child. They respectively ranked in 2nd and 3rd place in Flampe's "King of Little Sisters" survey.
    • Charlotte Anglaise is a subversion; in Flampe's "King of Little Brothers" survey, he ranked in 1st place (followed by Charlotte Newgo and Charlotte Dolce), indicating that he's well-loved by his older siblings despite his bratty behavior.
    • Charlotte Flampe is a double-subversion; at first she appeared to love her older brother Katakuri, with implications that her love went beyond what was normal, but when Katakuri rejected her help and showed off his monstrous mouth out of anger for interfering with his fight with Luffy, Flampe did a complete 180 and cruelly disowned and humiliated him by having her subordinates laugh and take pictures of his mouth. Katakuri had no regrets knocking her out with Conqueror's Haki.
  • Anti-Villain: Deconstructed with Reiju. She supports her family's activities, but that's only because she was physically and psychologically modified by Judge to always obey his orders, despite having some capacity to resist him. In truth, she's utterly disgusted with their violent actions, their Lack of Empathy, and their horrific abuse of her brother, Sanji, one of two people (the other being her dead mother) whom she (secretly) adores; it's her utter fear of being abused like Sanji was as a kid that keeps her relying on a Jerkass act so that her father and other brothers wouldn't suspect a thing. She also hates herself for both participating in her family's warmongering and condoning them, to the point where she wants herself and her family to die so the world will become a better place without their cruel, bloodthirsty presence, just to atone for the horrible things she did in the name of Germa. The only family member she thinks deserves to live is Sanji, who has their mother's empathy and living proof that Sora's Heroic Sacrifice was not in vain.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Judge is considered an enemy to his estranged third son, Sanji. It's not hard to see why.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil:
    • Both Judge and his sons not named "Sanji" play it straight. They believe that a "proper" royal should be a strong and powerful warrior who shouldn't bend down to help commoners as it is beneath their dignity, so they're perfectly fine abusing their servants and soldiers. In the case of Judge's sons, it's justified; because they had their empathy surgically removed in utero by their own father, they can't understand why abusing their servants and soldiers would be a bad thing. Worse yet, Judge both hammered his beliefs into them and enabled their Royal Brat behavior until they became utter monsters.
    • Subverted with Reiju. She keeps up a snooty attitude because she fears being abused by her father and brothers if she drops it in front of them. The only people she feels safe to do this around is Sanji, and her mother, Sora (before she died).
    • Despite Big Mom being a pirate captain, she is technically royalty in the pirate world as an Emperor, and she's the queen of her own kingdom, Totto Land. Most of her children, who are by default princes and princesses, take after her personality and values, save for a few (Moscato, Lola, Chiffon, Praline).
  • An Arm and a Leg:
    • Anyone who wants to leave Big Mom's crew must lose something valuable in return since in her words, she is losing a valuable resource. So when Jimbei asks to leave, she brings out a consequence roulette with various body parts that he would have to lose, including arms, legs or head. Even worse, the whole thing is rigged so that the person dies anyway, so Jimbei decides to Take a Third Option by skedaddling out of there.
    • Charlotte Perospero survives Pedro's suicide bomb attack in Chapter 878... minus his right arm.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: After her initial attempt to kill Sanji fails due to breaking down from hearing Sanji's sincere compliment about her Third Eye, she makes clear that she wants to murder him, ranting about how she deceived multiple people in the past while trying (and failing) to shoot at Sanji repeatedly. Sanji responds by asking if she's deceiving herself as well, shocking Pudding into further hesitation. This is what later triggers her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Artificial Limbs:
    • Charlotte Perospero makes himself a candy replacement of his right arm after he loses it to Pedro's suicide bomb attack.
    • Vinsmoke Yonji has a highly advanced artificial right arm made of metal, which gives him both immense strength, and the ability to extend, grab, and toss things around like nobody's business. This explains how he was able to fight Daifuku's genie easily, while Sanji was knocked away, and grab and use Charlotte Yuen as a wrecking ball. It also lends to his epithet, "Winch Green".
  • Association Fallacy: Of the "Guilt by Association" type. Because Chiffon is the runaway Lola's identical twin sister, Big Mom takes her homicidal anger towards Lola out on her by beating her black and blue whenever the two crossed paths with each other. This results in Chiffon disowning her mother, and siding with both Lola and her husband Capone Bege, and supports Bege's plan to off Big Mom without an inch of remorse.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Several members of Big Mom's family have this, either as Ministers or not.
    • The fifth son Charlotte Opera was the Minister of Whipped Cream, and is a walking, talking Blob Monster made of cream. Fittingly, he is the holder of the Cream-Cream Devil Fruit, which allows him to attack people with cream and enhance his attacks by making them "sweet".
    • The eldest son Charlotte Perospero governs Candy Island and his attire is adorned with all sorts of candies. In addition, his Devil Fruit power (Pero Pero no Mi) is candy-themed.
    • The 19th son Charlotte Mont-d'Or is the Minister of Cheese and has a Skeleton Motif going on, as cheese is a high source of calcium. His hair looks like a pile of shredded cheese. Fitting in with the bone theme, his body also resembles that of an emaciated person — skinny arms and legs, and a bloated belly.
    • The 16th son Charlotte Moscato is the Minister of Gelato, and his outfit is ice cream-themed, with the hilt of his sword shaped like an ice cream cone. His blue-pink pompadour resembles whipped gelato to some extent.
    • The 4th son Charlotte Oven is the Minster of Browned Foods, and his power (Netsu Netsu no Mi) allows him to heat up anything he touches. His Badass Cape darkens whenever he uses his power, like food darkening while being baked, and he wears a pair of gloves that are reminiscent of wearing oven mitts to protect the hands from being burned while taking food out of a hot oven.
    • The frilled, rose-themed clothes, the pattern of her shark body, and her (outlandish) bun makes Charlotte Praline, the 29th daughter, reminiscent of a French noblewoman due to being a child of an Emperor and therefore a person of high birth.
    • Charlottes Dolce and Dragée, the 45th and 46th sons of Big Mom, respectively, are identical twins who have very round bodies, and they absolutely love balloons.
    • Diesel is named after a type of train and his appearance is modeled after a train, being able to run fast like one. Downplayed in that he looks more like a steam train than a diesel one.
    • Charlotte Compote, Big Mom's eldest daughter and Minister of Fruits, wears a hat that's shaped like a trifle cup with fruits stacked in it. Her dress is also lined with two rows of oranges.
    • The 8th daughter Charlotte Brulee is named after a dessert that is caramelized via a butane torch, "scarring" it. Quite fittingly, she has a rather disfiguring gash running across her face, which was inflicted on her as a child by a group of bullies who wanted to spite Katakuri for beating them up. On the other hand, she's a very skinny woman who lives in the Seducing Woods — so much that Luffy saw her as a tree branch, which in itself lends to her "wicked witch" motif.
    • Charlotte Citron, Smoothie's younger triplet sister and Big Mom's 15th daughter, is the Minister of Eggs. Fittingly, she is rather plump-looking and has a rotund, egg-like body shape.
    • Charlotte Prim, Big Mom's 20th daughter and Praline's older fraternal twin sister, has her hair tied up in a long, cylindrical bun with several bunches of hair draping her head. Her hairstyle resembles an octopus, and she's a half-octopus mermaid.
    • Charlotte Basskarte, Big Mom's 13th son, has long orange hair that flares upwards like fire. He also has fire powers.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever:
    • During their trip to Whole Cake Island, the Sanji Retrieval Team encounter Giant Sea Centipedes. Sadly for the rest of the crew, Luffy just one-shots the critters easily.
    • Big Mom, with her huge size and monstrous appetite, devastates Sweet City as easily as Godzilla would during her hunger-induced rampage.
  • Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Brook's ruckus in the Treasure Room as he scrambled to copy the three Poneglyphs was enough to get the attention of Big Mom herself. Fortunately, he manages to finish copying the Poneglyphs and hide them in his skull before she noticed, but attracting someone like Big Mom was not on Brook's plans.

    B
  • Badass Arm-Fold:
    • Charlotte Katakuri sometimes assumes this pose in a confident and self-assured manner, especially when his Observation Haki predicts very favorable odds.
    • Played for laughs when Sanji's quadruplet brothers first meet Nami — they're all riding in a Germa carriage to Big Mom's place, arms folded, when Nami comes in and suddenly they turn to her with "Heart Eyes". And they never lose their serious expressions, either. It's quite hilarious to watch.
    • When Charlotte Daifuku is re-introduced as one of the forces who would pursue the Straw Hat-Firetank Pirate Alliance, he's seen standing with his arms crossed and a smug smirk on his face.
  • Badass Boast:
    • When Bege spots Katakuri at the end of chapter 864, he quickly realizes that he had foreseen a horrific future. Then, Katakuri orders him to kill Luffy. What follows afterwards is perhaps one of the biggest "Fuck you"s in the entire arc:
Capone Bege: All you can do is see a bit into the future. But it doesn't matter. 'Cause everyone has the same power to change it!
    • Luffy to Big Mom when he attempts to try and punch her while imprisoned in a book.
Luffy: After I deal with Kaido, you're next!
  • Badass Cape:
    • All of the Vinsmokes (save for Sanji and his deceased mother) wear capes, and they're powerful warriors. Reiju in particular is unique for resembling a butterfly's wings.
    • Some of Big Mom's children/crewmates wear capes as well, such as Cracker, Cinnamon, Custard, Oven, and Randolph. Cinnamon's cape in particular would've touched the floor if she wasn't so tall due to being half-Longleg.
  • Badass Family: Invoked.
    • The Vinsmoke family consists of powerful and capable warriors — "Poison Pink" Reiju can eat and generate extremely deadly poisons and easily drop-kicked her brother Yonji into the ocean; "Sparking Red" Ichiji and "Electric Blue" Niji stopped a civil war in four hours; "Black Leg" Sanji is a Haki user, a member of the Straw Hat Pirates' "Monster Trio", and an intelligent Spanner in the Works; "Winch Green" Yonji had the brass balls to openly challenge the Straw Hats to a fight despite their incredible power; and "The Garuda" Judge conquered the North Blue region by himself. That being said, the only reason the Vinsmoke children are so strong is because Judge wanted warriors to help lead Germa 66 to greatness, and so he genetically modified all of said children. Sanji and his brothers in particular were modified in the womb to be born strong but lacking empathy, but only Sanji was saved because his mother's desperate plan to save all of her sons didn't work as she intended. Thankfully, Sanji Took a Level in Badass by the start of the series and continued to grow from there.
    • Invoked with Big Mom's family; Big Mom wanted strong people to fill her crew, so she slept around with men of different species to do just that, hence why some of her children are Half Human Hybrids. She also played matchmaker with her children on the side so they can produce children that will grow up to be strong and powerful. Case in point, Big Mom's Sweet Commanders have very high bounties, Katakuri's surpassing Jack's, and also happen to be her own children.
  • Bad Boss:
    • Despite being powerful warriors and military commanders, the Vinsmoke Family's treatment of their soldiers (who are all clones) is rather shitty. All Germa soldiers have been conditioned to have Undying Loyalty, giving the Vinsmokes (save Sanji, his deceased mother, and maybe Reiju) the perfect excuse to use them as Human Shields, which Judge excuses as giving them an "enviable honor". Their cruelty also extends to their servants, as the poor family cook Cosette can attest to. In the case of the Vinsmoke sons, it's justified as they had their empathy removed in utero.
    • Big Mom counts as well. Besides eating a few of her own crew back in the Fishman Island arc, her choices are decided by her (very fickle) whims, and she can enter hunger-induced cravings without warning, meaning her own children and subordinates can get hurt if they're not careful. And as shown with her runaway 23rd daughter, Lola, she's not above killing her own children if they defy her. She also does not tolerate failures, which gets pointed out by their children (and Opera in particular who failed to keep Nami and Luffy in their prison).
    • Big Mom's second-eldest son, Charlotte Katakuri, is slightly better than her in this regard, sending his Chess Soldiers back into the Mirror World to save them from Luffy's Haki attack and accepting iced black tea instead of having it hot like usual to relieve stress for the chefs responsible for providing him his daily snacks... but if they catch him eating during snack time, he won't hesitate to skewer them. He doesn't like people watching him munch down on food like a total slob and will kill anyone who do.
    • One of Katakuri's younger sisters, Charlotte Flampe, angrily stabs one of her own snipers with a fork because he couldn't get a good shot on Luffy, and derides him for being useless.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end of Chapter 872, Big Mom goes into a craving attack just when the Big Mom Pirates are about to go after the Straw Hats, making it look like it'll create a diversion for them to escape Tottoland. Unfortunately, in Chapter 873, Perospero manages to turn Big Mom's attention to the Straw Hats, turning her rampage into the Straw Hats' biggest obstacle escaping.
  • Barehanded Bar Bending: Using her Super-Strength, little Reiju pulls this off to free Sanji from the family dungeons and help him run away from home.
  • Battle in the Rain: When the forces of Big Mom all march en masse to kill Luffy to avenge Cracker's defeat, a downpour made of candy rain occurs, courtesy of Big Mom's anger-fueled Weather Manipulation.
  • Beauty Is Bad:
    • In the Vinsmoke family, fraternal quadruplets Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji are all very attractive compared to their brutish father, but are Royal Brats utterly lacking in empathy, which is justified due to Judge surgically removing their ability to feel and understand compassion, and only care for themselves. Only Sanji, a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, and elder sister Reiju, who secretly hates her family's behavior/actions but puts up a facade out of fear for her own life, are subversions.
    • While most members of Big Mom's crew averts this trope with their Gonkiness, a few of of them are shown to be pretty yet evil. "Demon Lady" Amande is a beautiful swordswoman who will murder people without hesitation or remorse, and murdered King Baum for betraying her crew as agonizingly slow as possible. Big Mom's 14th daughter Charlotte Smoothie is one of her Sweet Commanders and is drop-dead gorgeous, but her Devil Fruit ability consists of draining people of their life fluids and drinking them without any remorse. Even Pudding (who was thought to be helping the Straw Hats) is revealed to be a sadistic (yet thoroughly broken) person who's been playing everyone aside from her family for fools, and is going on her mother's plan of killing the Straw Hats and the Vinsmoke family during the wedding.
    • Charlotte Katakuri is a subversion, in that he looks like a muscular and ruggedly handsome Hunk decked in leather and sporting facial scars... except underneath his scarf is a mouth that has rows of ginormous, pointy teeth, and he can apply mochi to his mouth so he can gobble down large donuts and sweets without a problem, making him look somewhat Gonk like some of his siblings.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness:
    • The Vinsmoke children's deceased mother, Sora, was a kind and sweet-hearted woman who loved all her children, and pulled a (partially successful) Heroic Sacrifice to protect Sanji and his brothers when Judge tried weaponizing them in utero. While all of her children inherited her attractiveness, only Sanji and Reiju inherited her compassion, to the detriment of both of them.
    • Some of Big Mom's children are physically attractive to varying degrees. Charlotte Moscato was a decent-looking Reasonable Authority Figure, and his sister Charlotte Praline is a devoted wife who, when push comes to shove, will choose loyalties with her husband over her mother any day.
    • Subverted with Sanji's beautiful bride-to-be, Pudding. She at first appears to be nothing like her cruel, gigantic Gonk of a mother, but it later turns out that her whole Nice Girl personality was just an act and that she's in reality just as cruel as her mother. The kicker is she wasn't born that way, but became who she is after spending her entire childhood being viciously abused by her peers, adults, and even her own mother.
    • Inverted with Lola and her twin sister, Chiffon, who are quite Gonk yet good people. Lola (inadvertently) stopped Big Mom's plans to become Pirate King and repair her reputation among the giants of Elbaf by running away from an important political marriage with the giant prince, Loki, and was a valuable ally to the Straw Hats way back in the Thriller Bark arc. Chiffon is a good parent to her son Pez and supportive of her husband Bege's plans to assassinate Big Mom, because she is tired of her mother's abuse and at the same time wants to protect Lola from Big Mom.
    • After pulling a Heel–Face Turn thanks to Sanji complimenting her third eye, Pudding decides to help the Straw Hats for real by aiding their escape from Totto Land while Big Mom rampages after them.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished:
    • Averted with the Germa chef Cosette, whose face is reduced to a swollen, bloody mess after Niji beats her up to spite Sanji for defending a lowly servant in front of the family. Later, Niji sarcastically tells Sanji that he would have beaten up everything but her face if he'd known that Sanji would get so worked up about it. The extent of her injuries is noticeably toned down in the anime.
    • Double-subverted with Yonji, who got his face so bent out of shape by Sanji that the only way to restore it to normal was by using a press machine. He's looking fine after that.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: With Sanji being his "failure", Judge renounces their family relationship. Thirteen years later, this comes back to haunt Judge when Sanji says it to his face while making him swear not to approach him or the East Blue.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Pudding had been severely bullied and ridiculed for having a Third Eye, to the point of completely snapping. When Sanji became the first person to compliment it years later, she breaks down sobbing and is left unable to bring herself to kill him as per Big Mom's plans, despite convincing herself that she has to.
  • Becoming the Mask: Pudding claims she had deceived countless people before Sanji with her Nice Girl mask. After Sanji compliments her Third Eye, she becomes kind for real (though she struggles with her evil self trying to take over).
  • Believing Their Own Lies: Pudding had been called "monster" and "freak" so many times in her childhood for having a third eye, that she secretly started to believe her tormentors and shaped her personality based on their opinions. When she tried (and failed) to shoot Sanji, she shouts that this is the real her and she deceived countless people before him. Sanji asks if she deceived herself as well, which notably shocks Pudding. She later pulls a Heel–Face Turn as a result... but not without problems.
  • Berserk Button:
    • As a general rule, if you hurt one of their family/crew, the Big Mom Pirates will try to make mincemeat out of you, come hell or high water. Just ask Luffy.
    • Big Mom has quite a few buttons of her own:
      • When Judge asked about the lack of giants in the island, Big Mom gives him a mean look. Turns out she had a bad history with giants, which was all thanks to a rampage she made in Elbaf during her childhood, which was induced by a semla withdrawal during the 12-day fasting period (she ate them in the semla feast just before) before a winter solstice feast, resulting in the giants calling for her death. It was also thanks to Lola running away the day she was supposed to marry the giant prince, Loki, in Big Mom's attempt to smooth over their relationships.
      • After Lola ran away from an important political Arranged Marriage with the giant prince, Loki, in the past, Big Mom would instantly fly into homicidal rages whenever she saw Lola's sister, Chiffon, due to Chiffon being Lola's identical twin and thus having the same face. So much that she would frequently beat Chiffon within an inch of her life whenever the two met.
      • Big Mom has another button — Mother Carmel, who raised her after her parents abandoned her. Asking about her relationship with the woman is suicide, and harming the picture Big Mom has of her makes her throw psychological fits (though the latter makes her physically vulnerable for a time). Capone Bege exploits this in his plan to kill Big Mom and, thanks to Brook, was on the verge of succeeding... until Big Mom's scream turned the entire plan into the biggest clusterfuck in history.
      • Big Mom also has another button — she does not tolerate betrayal. If you work for her and you ask to leave the crew, she'll let you do so (after taking away a portion of your lifespan). If you work for her and you oppose her, God have mercy on you, because Big Mom certainly doesn't. This is a main reason why she hates Lola, one of her daughters, for running away from an important political marriage, because Lola "betrayed" her.
    • After an entire childhood of being bullied for having a Third Eye, ridiculing it has become Pudding's "kill horribly" button. After Sanji became the first person not to press that button by complimenting how beautiful it looks on her, Pudding collapses in broken tears in response to this genuine act of kindness.
    • God help you if you happen to catch Charlotte Katakuri during one of his private snack times. The reason why is that he has a mouth full of boar-like fangs, which earned him a lot of bullying in his childhood, and he stretches his own mouth with his mochi powers just so he can chow down on sweets and tea to his heart's content. He is extremely ashamed of both his mouth and sloppy table manners, and always isolates himself whenever he eats so his family or anyone working for him don't see what he's like off-duty. Anyone who does is automatically dead.
  • Berserker Tears:
    • Combined with Broken Tears; Pudding sheds these in a flashback when she psychologically snaps from the years-long vicious bullying and abuse for having a Third Eye, stabbing one bully and chasing after the rest with a knife. Combined with a Slasher Smile, it makes the flashback both sad and horrifying at the same time.
    • Carrot later exhibits these when she lashes out in a rage at Katakuri following Pedro's Heroic Sacrifice. She doesn't accomplish anything though thanks to the disparity in power.
  • BFS:
    • Two of the Sweet Commanders, Charlotte Cracker and his sister Smoothie, carry huge swords on their person that they use as weapons. Smoothie's sword especially would've looked huge if she weren't half-Longleg.
    • Crewmembers "Demon Lady" Charlotte Amande, her sister Charlotte H and "Sweeper" Bobbin carry large swords with them as well.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Big Mom and Judge serve as the main antagonists of the arc who are working together. Their plan is to make their alliance official through a wedding between Big Mom's daughter Pudding and Judge's son Sanji. However, Big Mom had no intention of sticking to said plan to begin with, and only pretended to ally with Germa 66 so she can kill off the Vinsmokes and obtain their secret cloning technologies, making her the sole Big Bad.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • When a severely beaten-up Cracker crash-lands into Sweet City and his siblings find him in the rubble, they are distraught, and deduce Luffy was responsible for Cracker's injuries. His brother Mont-d'Or, being more enraged, swears to kill Luffy for hurting his brother. They all go out later to attack Luffy with the force of a powerful army.
    • Reiju cared for her little brother, Sanji, and tended to his wounds from either their brothers' bullying or Judge's Training from Hell during downtime, but because she feared becoming a target for abuse herself, she was forced to keep it a secret and reluctantly watched as her family (save their mother) abused Sanji for being a "weak" dud. Ultimately, when she learned of Sanji's imprisonment, she used her Super-Strength to free him and helped him escape on a cruise ship, telling him to never come back.
    • Aside from being constantly abused by Big Mom for looking like her younger runaway twin sister, Lola, another reason why Chiffon decided to help her husband Bege kill her own mother is because Lola would never be safe as long as Big Mom lives.
    • Even Katakuri gets in on this — when Luffy goes after fraternal twins, Charlotte Mascarpone and Joscarpone, to get them to stop attacking the Thousand Sunny, Katakuri warns him to stay away from his "precious" brothers and sisters before delivering a cranked-up No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. He later does the same when Luffy attempts to hit Brulee to get her to stop taunting him. And when they were children, Katakuri discovered that his sister Brulee was attacked and scarred by the same bullies he beat up, leading him to massacre them in a rage.
    • When Perospero and Amande encounter Luffy with a captive Brulee on Nuts Island, they immediately try to rescue their younger sister, though Perospero's candy abilities prevent them from further pursuit. In the anime, Amande's quadruplet sisters Effilée and Mondée also join in, trying to hinder Luffy's escape, though they fail.
    • However, it's tragically subverted when it's revealed that no one, even Katakuri, helped protect Chiffon from Big Mom's violent abuse, or Pudding from her childhood bullies. It's especially telling since Pudding was also bullied for a physical deformity like Katakuri was as a boy, and Katakuri himself vowed to protect his other siblings from being hurt like Brulee was. When Brulee tried to talk her down from helping Bege assassinate Big Mom, Chiffon called her out on not doing something about their mother's abuse, and later decided to completely cut ties with her family as it crashed and burned during Big Mom's hunger rampage. Pudding also secretly helped the Straw Hats after Sanji gave her the love and encouragement her own siblings did not.
  • Big Brother Worship:
    • Because Katakuri is the strongest of his family as well as extremely dependable and capable, his own siblings see him as a shining example of what a Charlotte should be, and worship the ground he walks on. Brulee boasts to Luffy that Katakuri had never once laid down in his life, to Katakuri's exasperation, and Flampe, one of the youngest daughters, is the head of Katakuri's fan club and also vies for her older brother's attention.
    • It turns out this was actually invoked by Katakuri, who deliberately structured his public persona to have no flaws and thus be the recipient of such praise, in a misguided attempt to never let his family be hurt again. It also serves as a deconstruction, as the praise is shallow, since his family members aren't worshiping the actual Katakuri but rather an idealized version of him. When he allows the mask to drop, at least one member of his family is shown to ridicule him. Only Brulee, his "ugly" sister, and possibly his other blood siblings respect him as he is. Specially, Brulee genuinely looks up to him and praises him despite knowing his true self, because he defended her honor after a group of bullies after they scarred her in a Revenge by Proxy gambit.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Just when Luffy and Nami are about to be tortured for information on where Lola is, Jimbei arrives and knocks out Opera, and sets fire to the entire library to free the other prisoners for good measure.
    • The crew make to escape on the Sunny but Big Mom and Perospero continue to chase them over the ocean with Big Mon turning the ocean itself into Homie to crush them with a tidal wave. All seems lost until Jimbei takes control of the wheel and steers it toward a pocket inside the wave which he dubs, "The Green Room". Just barely keeping everyone from getting crushed. What's more, both Big Mom and Perospero believe they were crushed by the wave and report back to Katakuri of this. Once more keeping their true status hidden from their enemies.
    • Later Big Mom and Perospero's fleet manage to catch up after the Straw Hats on the Sunny initially managed to knock Big Mom off it. Only this time she's about to come down on them with Prometheus with none of them being able to do anything about it. Chopper goes to Monster Point and prepares for a last stand when Sanji, Bege, Pudding, Chiffon and the Firetank Pirates finally arrive with the wedding cake, which gets Big Mom's attention just as she was an inch from torching the Sunny.
    • Pekoms comes to help Luffy escape the Mirror World after Luffy defeats Katakuri, hoping to use his Suilong power to plow through Big Mom's forces waiting outside for Luffy. He's quickly overwhelmed but manages to pass Luffy over to a waiting Sanji who tries to sky walk out of the area. However, the two are knocked out of the sky and about to be killed when the Vinsmokes and Germa 66 show up to save them.
    • Sanji manages to get Luffy back to the Sunny and they proceed to get out of dodge. However standing in their way are Smoothie's fleet and, along with Daifuku, once more have the Straw Hats pinned. Just when it looks like a last stand for the crew, the Sun Pirates come to lend aid.
    • Wadatsumi of all people manages to pull this when the Sunny nearly runs right into the Big Mom Pirate flagship who nearly blow it out of the water. Just before the impact, Wadatsmi pulled the Sunny underwater, put it into his mouth and switched it with the Sun Pirates ship to fool the Big Mom Pirates into thinking it was destroyed. It's shortly negated when the ruse is discovered, and Charlotte Oven uses his heat powers to boil the ocean to force Wadatsumi to reemerge.
  • Big Eater:
    • Even as a child, Big Mom was a huge eater (no pun intended) — before the fasting period started in Elbaf, she ate dozens of semla at once. Her attempts to fast during the fasting period ended in horrific disaster as she ended up going on one of many hunger-fueled rampages that destroyed the village and left many townspeople dead in search for more semla.
    • Big Mom's eldest son, Charlotte Perospero, enjoys eating candy... even candy that were once people. However, in spite of his love for sweets, he has an impossibly skinny body unlike his incredibly obese mother, which can be justified with his slower consumption methods via licking instead of shoving everything into his mouth.
    • Her second-eldest son, Charlotte Katakuri, is also a huge eater, stuffing himself with tea and large-sized donuts by the cart-full, and enlarging his own fang-filled mouth so he can eat said donuts easily and at a faster rate. However, the lengths he goes through trying to hide this as well as his extreme embarrassment and fury at being discovered by Luffy paints him as a closet hedonist whose eating habits are a Guilty Pleasure. In flashbacks, though, it's revealed that some of his siblings knew of this and didn't mind one bit; Daifuki and Oven laughed as they watched him stuff his mouth with donuts, Perospero tolerated it but still tried encouraging him to make friends, and Brulee still loves him despite knowing of his atrocious eating habits.
    • Bobbin is also implied to be one, since he tried grabbing at Sanji's bento lunch so he could eat it for himself.
    • Charlotte Citron, Big Mom's 15th daughter, is also implied to be one; she suggests that she and her sisters could've waited for the Straw Hats on Cacao Island from the beginning, while having tea and chocolates. It's no wonder she's so plump-looking.
  • Big Entrance: During the assassination plan overview in Chapter 859, upon learning that Luffy will serve as a distraction as Bege assaults the Mother Carmel portrait, Luffy declares that he has the perfect entrance planned. Chapter 862 sees the entrance in action, as Luffy and his clones (animals made to look like Luffy thanks to Charlotte Brulee's Devil Fruit powers) jump out of the wedding cake. Cue Big Mom Jaw Dropping.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family:
    • The Charlotte Family is huge, with 84 confirmed children and counting, with Big Mom as their mother and matriarch. However, while most of them care about each other to varying degrees, they are just as homicidal and insane as their mother. Big Mom's terrible parenting, her willingness to attack her own children (like Charlotte Moscato and Charlotte Opera), and Control Freak tendencies has left most of her children terrified of her, with those children working under here fearful of receiving You Have Failed Me from her if they screw up. Two of her daughters, Praline and Chiffon, are more loyal to their husbands than Big Mom, with Chiffon supporting Bege's assassination plan because of all the abuse Big Mom heaped on her for being the identical twin sister of the runaway Lola, whom Big Mom despises with a passion. Pudding, who is supposedly one of Big Mom's favorites and supports her plans, Used to Be a Sweet Kid but became a sadistic and cunning psychopath because of both Big Mom and the other children ridiculing her Third Eye, and is frustrated with her mother treating her like a convenient tool. So when Sanji shows Pudding kindness for the first time, she secretly pulls a Heel–Face Turn to help the Straw Pirates escape Totto Land. Even Katakuri, the strongest Sweet Commander and widely considered to be the "ace" of his family, wasn't safe from the dysfunction — although he was bullied for a physical "flaw" like Pudding, it wasn't until his sister Brulee got attacked and scarred by his childhood bullies out of spite that he started hiding everything "flawed" about himself so no one would get hurt again. Even though he was loved and admired as an adult, Katakuri actually feels tremendously stressed from maintaining his image, so he has "snack times" where he could relax alone in peace. Anana, the youngest child of the Charlotte Family, shares her mother's homicidal sadism and displays a worrying habit of using knives to mutilate her stuffed toys and torment her siblings with them.
    • The Vinsmoke family is also this, despite Judge appearing like a loving father to all of his children not named "Sanji". Judge's plans of world conquest and Lineage Factor experiments resulted in 1) the Vinsmoke children losing their mother, who had to resort to a Heroic Sacrifice after her then-unborn quadruplet sons were experimented on against her will, 2) the eldest child, Reiju, becoming a Stepford Smiler who is overcome with such self-loathing over her and her family's actions that she became a Death Seeker in adulthood, 3) Sanji (the only one ended up normal like what his mom wanted) being horrifically abused by his brothers and at one point was left to rot in the dungeons for failing to meet Judge's standards, and 4) Ichiji, Yonji, and Niji becoming monstrous Royal Brats thanks to a combination of Judge psychologically altering them in the womb, leaving them with only a tiny shred of humanity; Judge hammering his Might Makes Right and Virtue Is Weakness philosophies into them; and having their bratty behavior enabled by Judge for years. All in all, Judge and his violent ambitions are the main reason why his family has a very poor, loveless dynamic.
  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • When Luffy ruins an entire week's worth of the Straw Hats' food supply with his tremendously awful cooking, Nami decides to cook for the crew until Sanji comes back, so a similar catastrophe won't happen again. Luffy expects to pay up like usual, but then Nami shouts she doesn't want his money. Cue this trope.
    • In Chapter 862, Big Mom gets an epic combination of this and a Jaw Drop, when numerous Luffy clones unexpectedly jump out of the ginormous wedding cake.
    • A chapter later, we see a flashback that tells of the Luffy clones' origins — as part of his Wedding Smashers plan, Luffy coerced Brulee into making multiple clones of himself by capturing dozens of animals for him. Brulee is dismayed.
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Capone Bege makes note of this trope when he has his wife and baby son watch him shoot Pekoms off a cliff.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing:
    • While initially seeming like a decent person in contrast to the majority of her family, it later turns out that Pudding's whole Nice Girl personality was all an act and that her true self is actually just as rotten as her mother's. She, in reality, is extremely skilled at acting and thus had been deceiving Sanji and his friends the whole time, doing so for her mother's desires. However, she wasn't born that way — she only did so after experiencing an entire childhood of horrific abuse and ridicule for having a Third Eye, which profoundly shaped her personality in her adult years. After Sanji showed her genuine kindness, she pulled a Heel–Face Turn.
    • Mother Carmel appeared to be a loving and caring person who cares about the children, desires for a place where all races are equal, and wants peace between the giants and the World Government. Except that she's in actuality a child slaver in the underworld and has been selling orphans to the World Government be to be slaves, or, soldiers, or trained in espionage and she only settled in Elbaf for protection reasons.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Straw Hats rescue Sanji and escape with their lives as do the Firetank Pirates, but not without significant costs. Pedro and Pound have died ensuring they can escape, Pekoms was last heard about to have his eyes gouged out, the Sun Pirates (along with Jimbei) and Germa stay behind with their fates highly worrying, and, while she pulled a Heel–Face Turn, Pudding has been left a broken wreck knowing that she would likely never be able to see her "husband" Sanji again. And that's without even the worry of Big Mom living to fight another day.
  • Blackmail: Judge threatens to kill Zeff, Sanji's father-figure, if Sanji steps out of line or refuses to obey his orders to marry Pudding. Ichiji and Niji later uses that to their advantage so they can pummel Sanji into submission again. It later ends for naught as Sanji's wedding turns out to be a death trap for the Vinsmokes.
  • Black Bead Eyes: A few members of the Charlotte family — Yuen and the male decuplets — have black bead-like eyes.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Everything Pudding says before The Reveal and her eventual Heel–Face Turn counts as this.
    • Big Mom assuring Sanji she won't harm the Straw Hats if they surrender quietly and join her as her underlings. Big Mom already planned to kill them all for defying her.
    • Caesar attempting to bluff his way out of Big Mom's gigantification research by stating he was this close in completing the research despite the fact that it was impossible for anyone to make anyone actual giants. Unfortunately it backfires on him as Big Mom grants him an exact replica of his Punk Hazard Lab with a 2 week deadline.
    • Big Mom giving a chance for possible resignations to her allies is also this, as the game of resignation is actually rigged to kill the player.
  • Bolivian Army Cliffhanger: Jimbei, the Sun Pirates and Germa 66 stay behind in order to buy the Straw Hats enough time to escape Big Mom's territory, all while facing the bulk of her crew and Linlin herself.
  • Bratty Half-Pint:
    • Charlotte Anana is a cute young girl who enjoys mutilating her stuffed toys with knives and sadistically tormenting her siblings. Unsurprisingly, many of said siblings hate her for it.
    • Charlotte Anglaise is a little boy who dresses up and acts like a stereotypical Greaser, down to riding a huge caterpillar like a motorcycle. Yet his ideas of delinquency seem like Poke the Poodle, such as not brushing teeth before bed.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him:
    • When Luffy and Nami encounter Sanji, who's with his family at the time, Sanji attempts to pull a Shoo the Dog on the two. This is not because he truly wants to do so, but because a) he's got his explosive bracelets on (or so he thinks) that will blow his hands off if he leaves the island, and b) because his family and Big Mom are holding Zeff hostage and will kill him if Sanji doesn't cooperate. What's worse is that Sanji actually beats Luffy down with his Diable Jambe just to show how "serious" he is. Luffy understandably takes offense to that suggestion and Nami gives Sanji a Bitch Slap for it.
    • Subverted when Sanji returns to find Luffy. When Sanji once again plans to sacrifice himself to buy the Straw Hats some time, Luffy punches him in the face to snap him out of it, and he rejoins the crew.
  • Breath Weapon: In Chapter 898, Reiju blows clouds of deadly poison on a group of soldiers who were planning to shoot Sanji and Luffy out of the sky with tear gas.
  • Brick Joke:
    • At the end of the Drum Island Arc, when Nami asked Sanji and Luffy about what they thought Chopper joined their crew as, Sanji replied, "Emergency Food Supply." Then comes chapter 825, when the Sanji retrieval team is starving, and Luffy looks at Chopper hungrily, saying, "Emergency food supply..." Chopper's reply: "Don't look at me like that!"
    • Also, while it may have taken over a decade, Sanji's "Mr. Prince" alias from the Alabasta arc became a Brick Joke once the Vinsmoke family and his royal lineage was revealed.
  • Bright Is Not Good:
    • Save for Sanji and Sora, the Vinsmokes wear brightly-colored raid suits — Reiju's is pink, Ichiji's is red, Niji's is dark blue, Yonji's is forest green, and Judge's is golden orange. Except for the aforementioned Sanji and Sora, and Reiju, none of the Vinsmokes are very nice at all, despite appearing like a model family.
    • The Charlotte family as well as Big Mom's pirate crew and Big Mom herself, mostly don pink and lots of bright colors such as blue and yellow, so much that they could fit in a Disney movie or a circus. Most of said people, save for a few like Chiffon and Praline, are as sadistic and insane as Big Mom.
  • Broken Ace: If one needed any proof of how much of a Big, Screwed-Up Family the Charlotte Family is, look no further than the alleged Ace of the family, Charlotte Katakuri. Handsome, stoic, intelligent, intuitive, and monstrously strong — the strongest of the Big Mom Pirates sans Big Mom herself, in fact. He is absolutely adored by the rest of his family for being the "perfect" human being. However, this is all a facade; Beneath the Mask, Katakuri is no less gluttonous and hedonistic than the rest of the family, and has a physical "deformity" in his "pelican eel" mouth, which he hides beneath a shredded scarf. Like his younger sister Pudding and her third eye, Katakuri was bullied and ridiculed for this mouth when he was young, but he initially didn't care since he was strong enough to beat up whoever picked on him. One day, Katakuri learned that his carelessness led to his younger sister Brulee being attacked and horribly scarred by the same bullies he beat up in an attempt to get revenge. He blamed himself for this massive slip-up, and hid everything about himself that could be construed as a flaw and cultivated this image as the ideal Charlotte family member that is idolized by all of his siblings. However, having to live up to this image puts him under a lot of pressure, and he copes with the stress by having a daily "snack time" that he spends in isolation, the only time of the day he allows himself to act as his true self. Seeing him during this time is an immediate death sentence, as Katakuri is so insecure that he is willing to maintain his reputation by any means necessary. It is only during his fight with Luffy that he goes through the Character Development needed to break out of this mindset and fight as himself, for himself.
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: According to Oven, Katakuri had a record of undefeated victories that was considered legendary. Upon hearing that he actually lost to Luffy, the entirety of the Big Mom Pirates was notably shocked.
  • Brother–Sister Team: The large majority of the Charlotte Family are powerful, capable fighters, with some of them being Devil Fruit users. In general, if there's opposition to be faced, they will all come en masse to put it down.
    • The Sweet Commanders are a prime example of this, consisting of three (formerly four) brothers and sisters who all have very high bounties. Katakuri, who is the most powerful and has the highest bounty, is seen as their "leader".
    • Outside the Sweet Commanders, there's Smoothie and her triplet sisters Cinnamon and Citron, Katakuri and his triplet brothers Daifuku and Oven, and fraternal twins Mascarpone and his sister Joscarpone who are always seen together.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Sanji finally reappears in the present day, after having only been seen in flashbacks in the previous arc. Caesar reappears as well.
    • Jimbei, after parting company with the Straw Hats at the end of Fishman Island, returns. Granted, most fans were expecting this, since it was already known that Jimbei and the Sun Pirates have affiliations with Big Mom.
    • Bobbin from the Fishman Island arc finally reappears after being absent during the Dressrossa and Zou arcs.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Yonji, despite being described by Judge as a formidable fighter, gets kicked into the sea by his sister for being "stingy" and gets his face rearranged by Sanji, the "weak" brother he used to bully when they were kids. And to get said face fixed, he has to be hit on both sides by a press machine. He also doesn't seem to have an elemental power of his own like his older siblings do; instead he just has an artificial right arm that gives him a strength boost and can be extended to grab onto things.
    • Brulee eventually falls into this role. Despite having some luck in capturing Chopper and Carrot (and forcing Nami to flee), she ends up going through a Humiliation Conga in very short order: first she gets tricked by Carrot and defeated by her and Chopper, and then she's forced to help them while they traverse the Mirror World, and all the while, she continually gets humiliated by the group (which later includes Capone Bege's group) as they use her powers against Big Mom and the rest of her crew. Eventually she is retrieved by her siblings and uses the opportunity to repay the Straw Hat-Firetank Pirate Alliance for what they put her through. But even though she has some success in keeping the Straw Hats on their toes, she very quickly relapses back into Butt Monkey territory — Luffy used her to trap him and Katakuri in the Mirror-World, and when he was trying to stay away from Katakuri during his recharging period, he captured Brulee to jump from island to island through the mirrors, and Brulee was reduced to screeching for help and making threats once again. When she gets the chance to announce Katakuri's defeat by Luffy to her family, it has the intended effect of inciting everyone into a homicidal rage that makes them focus on Luffy and Sanji... except they end up ignoring the Vinsmokes, allowing Germa 66 to carve out a path of escape to ensure Sanji and Luffy reunite with their friends on the Sunny.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Happens on both sides:
    • Justified with Reiju; when she and Sanji were younger, she never protected him from their brothers' vicious bullying and only laughed at his misery, only because she feared becoming a target herself. In truth, she loves Sanji and is disgusted by her family's abuse, but due to their Virtue Is Weakness philosophy, she only helps Sanji when her family isn't looking.
    • It's implied that Chiffon's brothers and sisters knew she was being abused by Big Mom for looking like her runaway twin sister, Lola, but never once stepped in to help. Neither did they help Pudding at all, when she was viciously bullied for being third-eyed as a child. Not even Big Mom stood up to her being bullied, though she at least told Pudding to cover her third eye with her bangs. Even Katakuri, who had gone through the same type of bullying himself as a child, was notably absent while Pudding was tormented. This led to her snapping at a young age.

  • Cain and Abel:
    • Sanji's quadruplet brothers are the Cain to his Abel. Yonji, Ichiji, and Niji all hate Sanji and look down on him for being weak and compassionate. The feeling is mutual. It's later justified with the reveal that they had been modified by Judge in utero so they can become the perfect killing machines, leaving them unable to feel and understand the same benevolent emotions that Sanji has. They constantly bully him because they literally cannot understand why Sanji continues to display the empathy that the three brothers lack. However, after Sanji saves their lives in their darkest hour, his brothers end up helping him and the Straw Hats escape Totto Land, and in a twisted form of pride and affection, they give Sanji his very own raid suit.
    • Subverted with Reiju, who constantly put up a Jerkass act out of fear of being abused herself and only helped Sanji when no one was looking. While their interactions appeared cold on the outside, they deeply care for each other. When Sanji offered to save her from Big Mom's wedding plans, Reiju persuaded him to forget about her and instead focus on returning to the Straw Hats.
    • Charlotte Anana, one of Big Mom's youngest daughters, is a Bratty Half-Pint who sadistically torments her siblings, to the point where they hate her with one of them expressing a wish to kill her for being a rotten person. On the other hand, she's ranked as the third-favorite younger sister of the Charlotte Family.
  • Call-Back:
    • When Sanji's older sister, Reiju, reveals the reason why Sanji's bounty condition was changed to "Only Alive", she revealed that it was their father, who was looking for Sanji after he left when he was 8 years old who did it. She also mentions that he made the Marines pursue Duval for his somehow similarity.
    • Like Zoro and Luffy before him, Sanji also eats food that was thrown to the floor as a gesture of gratitude. Sanji is also shown trying to bring food to his mother as a child. The food gets all scrambled and soggy from the rain, but Sora eats it anyway and encourages him. The whole scene is echoed when Sanji finally meets back with Luffy and gives him a similarly messed basket of food.
    • As with Robin (Enies Lobby arc) and Nami (Arlong Park arc) before him, Sanji attempts to not get Luffy involved but asks the latter to help him shortly afterward.
    • After Pudding reveals her plans to kill Sanji and leave Luffy and Nami for dead, Luffy starts trying to unshackle himself at any costs regardless if he rips his hands off. He then claims he'd do the same to Nami later. Good thing fellow madman Zoro, who has considered that stunt twice before, isn't there to encourage him.
    • While wondering how Sanji would react to her betrayal, Pudding makes a series of Wild Take faces including the jaw-dropped expression from Enel that's been a more frequent Running Gag in recent arcs.
    • After Jimbei breaks out Luffy and Nami by burning their book prison, Nami recalls the time that she was in a similar situation when Mr. 3 almost trapped her in his Wax Museum Morgue during the Little Garden Arc. Also, Jimbei reminds Luffy that the first time they met was in a prison (Impel Down).
    • The entire arc plot of rescuing Sanji from his arranged marriage with Pudding and later being killed by the Charlotte Family, is one big call-back to Robin's arc, where she had to be rescued from being taken through the Gates of Justice and executed for her "crimes" (being the Sole Survivor of the Ohara Incident)
    • Like in his introductory arc, Brook exorcises the mooks that are animated by the Big Bad's Devil Fruit abilities, this time with his Soul Power instead of salt.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Sanji calls out Judge twice:
    • First, in Chapter 832, he immediately tells Judge that he's not his father upon seeing him for the first time in at least 13 years since the latter abused him as a child.
    • Then, in Chapter 870, while the Straw Hat-Firetank Pirate Alliance are hiding away from the Charlotte Family in Bege's body; he angrily pulls down Judge so they could look at each other, eye to eye, and reminds him that "Vinsmoke Sanji" running away from Germa and dying at sea was exactly what Judge wanted. In front of the Straw Hats, Jimbei, his siblings, and the Firetank Pirates, Sanji makes Judge swear that he won't approach him or the East Blue, which Judge surprisingly does.
  • Came Back Strong: Baron Tamago's Devil Fruit, the Egg-Egg Fruit allows him to be reborn as a chick-guy should his egg body is cracked, and then a chicken-guy should his chick body is harmed, becoming stronger each time. Pedro tried to avert this by blowing the guy up with dynamite; Pedro managed to take Tamago down with it, but he still becomes a full chicken.
  • The Caper: For the first half of the arc, this was Pedro and Brook's objective: obtaining rubbings of the Poneglyphs in Big Mom's Treasure Room. Despite being captured by Big Mom, upon being rescued, Brook reveals that he had completed the mission, by hiding the rubbings within the cracks of his skull.
  • Cheerful Child:
    • Sanji was one as a kid, being the only one of his quadruplet brothers who still has his humanity and empathy intact. It didn't last long, however.
    • Big Mom was also one when she was younger, a stark contrast to the hedonistic and homicidally insane monster she would become.
    • Bege and Chiffon's son, Pez, is also one, due to being a baby.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The abnormally giant kids in the Punk Hazard arc is given a bit of significance here: it's due to Caesar Clown experimenting a serum of body growth that will turn them into giants, and Big Mom was the one who ordered him to make it so she can make her children as big as her.
    • That Vivre Card Lola gave Nami at the end of the Thriller Bark arc. Not only was it one that would lead the crew to Big Mom if they were ever in trouble (ironically), it's also a deterrent to Big Mom's "Homies" as they can't go near it since it has Big Mom's aura in it. Though it later gets taken away by "Demon Lady" Amande after Big Mom's crew Zerg Rush Luffy and Nami.
    • Also the "Treasure Box" from Fishman Island that was among the riches Luffy let Pekoms and Tamago take as compensation for sparing the island for the lack of candy. Big Mom finds it later and proclaims she'll open it on Sanji's wedding day, though both the Straw Hats and she are unaware that there was a bomb implanted in it to keep it from being stolen again. During the chaos caused by the Wedding Smashers, the Box is knocked off of the castle. It opens when it lands, and the explosion causes the entire building to crumble. This turns out to be a good thing though as the explosion keeps Big Mom and her family from killing the heroes.
    • Brook's cracked skull that was shown during his introduction (i.e Thriller Bark) is shown to have come in handy when he hides the Poneglyph rubbings he obtained inside it.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • Pudding was first seen in Big Mom's first introduction, i.e at the end of Fishman Island arc, with just a panel dedicated for her without her saying anything. Here she becomes an important character.
    • Lola, the Straw Hats' ally in the Thriller Bark arc, is revealed here as the estranged runaway daughter of Big Mom and the younger identical twin sister of Chiffon, wife of Capone Bege of the Firetank Pirates and the mother of an infant boy, making her a Walking Spoiler.
    • Katakuri does indeed help to ruin Bege's assassination plan as Bege feared early on, though not through predicting the future, but by interfering with the present, when he melds his mochi into a ton of spheres that his siblings can use as earplugs and deploys them en masse, thereby freeing them from the ill effects of Big Mom's Conqueror's Haki screams and allowing them to rampage freely against the alliance coming after her.
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: Charlotte Snack, a former Sweet Commander, was first mentioned in Chapter 837 and named in Chapter 843, but he doesn't make an appearance until Chapter 894 when he joins many of his fellow siblings as part of Oven's ambush on the Straw Hats' planned rendezvous at Cacao Island. In terms of the chapter release schedule, that is a long amount of time, as it was late 2016 when he was first mentioned and it took until early 2018 for him to appear properly.
  • The Clan: The foundation and infrastructure of Big Mom's whole organization, from her pirate crew to Totto Land, revolves around her family with her as the overall ruling matriarch. Her 86 children serve either as a means to bring and unite other pirate crews under her fold via their marriages such as in the cases of Pudding, Chiffon, and Praline; or as high ranking executives in her empire in one form or another such as in the cases of Moscato, Brulee, Perospero, and the Sweet Commanders (Cracker, Smoothie, and Katakuri).
    • From there, the Charlotte family extends to Big Mom's grandchildren such as Pez; the spouses who married her children such as Pez's father Bege and Aladine; and unrelated parties who serve her either directly under her or through their relations to her children's spouses such as the Firetank and Sun Pirates.
    • In regards to Big Mom's 43 husbands, while Pudding during her explanation to Luffy and his friends claims that she considers them part of the immediate core Charlotte family, the sentiment, however, isn't shared by all. According to Cracker, Big Mom simply sees all her husbands as just a random group of "outsiders" with no blood relation whatsoever. She just sees them as sperm donors and couldn't care less what happened to them, a sentiment shared by others in the family such as Cracker.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Charlotte Praline is enraged at the thought of her husband, Aladdin, leaving her alone when he and the Sun Pirates decide to break away from Big Mom's crew. She then subverts it by revealing she's more loyal to Aladdin than her mother, and will happily follow him to the ends of the Earth.
  • Clone Army: The various soldiers of the Germa Kingdom uses are revealed to be clones grown from People Jars. Using his knowledge as a scientist who once worked alongside Vegapunk, Judge developed the process to create these soldiers to serve his ambitions. These clones are mass-produced with each one taking 5 years to create and mature into a body equivalent to a 20-year-old. They are strong and fearless soldiers that are completely loyal to Judge and his family and are more than willing to sacrifice their very lives if the need arises. Although Judge and those close to him know about the truth about these clones, the clones themselves aren't aware of their true nature. This technology is the reason Big Mom offered an alliance and intends to murder the Vinsmokes.
  • Co-Dragons:
    • Big Mom, being one of the Four Emperors, has a group of elite pirates in her crew known as the Sweet Commanders, consisting of Charlotte Katakuri, Charlotte Smoothie, and Charlotte Cracker. There was once a fourth Sweet Commander known as Snack, who was defeated by Urouge during the two-year gap in the storyline. He is now demoted to a regular member of the Big Mom Pirates.
    • Napoleon, Prometheus, and Zeus, her personal Homies who personally aid her, can be seen as her "true" Co-Dragons, due to being made with portions of Big Mom's soul, imbibing them with facets of her personality.
  • Collapsing Lair: The explosives inside the Tamatebako go off and destroy the base of the Whole Cake Chateau, causing the whole thing to tip over and nearly crush Sweet City.
  • Collector of the Strange: Big Mom's "library" consists of exotic humans and animals that are preserved in books by her son Mont-d'Or's Book World ability, and bound by pins that are reminiscent of those found in butterfly/insect collections. These prisoners can't age or escape, either, and are self-conscious enough to cry for help. When the Vinsmoke family sees their collection for the first time, they're understandably freaked out. She was going to collect Brook too upon seeing him in her Treasure Room, but luckily, the Straw Hats rescued him.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: Katakuri trained his Observation Haki to the point that he can slightly see ahead into the future and interpret his visions with "100% percent accuracy". Unfortunately for him, it's not 100% fail-proof.
  • Combat Stilettos:
    • Charlotte Galette wears heeled shoes and possesses a Devil Fruit power that allows her to control liquids and restrain people.
    • Galette's younger twin sister, Charlotte Poire, wears high-heeled boots and is a combatant of the Big Mom Pirates.
    • Smoothie of the Sweet Commanders likewise also wears high-heeled boots and is a deadly fighter with one of the highest bounties a female One Piece character can possess.
  • The Comically Serious:
    • Vinsmoke Ichiji is the most aloof and snarkiest of the Vinsmoke children. Seeing him go gaga over Nami was hilarious.
    • Charlotte Katakuri is an extremely badass Cold Sniper who is also a seer with a higher bounty than Jack of the Beast Pirates... yet he kills people with jellybeans, and the name and function of his Devil Fruit (Mochi Mochi no Mi) are absolutely ridiculous — turning into sticky mochi. To his credit, it's useful and surprisingly strong too.
  • Contrived Coincidence:
    • Happens twice in a row to the Straw Hats just as they enter into Big Mom's territory:
      • The first ship they come across is part of the Germa 66. Specifically, with Sanji's older sister and younger brother on board. Furthering the contrivance, they meet just as Luffy is dying of poison so powerful that it overpowers his immunity. Reiju just happens to specialize in poison and can draw it out of him.
      • After the Germa 66 let the group go and they arrive on the island, one of the first people Luffy and Chopper run into is Pudding herself.
    • That big-headed man buried in the ground that Luffy, Nami, Chopper, and Carrot keep running into in the Seducing Woods? That's Lola's (the pirate captain who supplied Luffy with the shadows from the Thriller Bark arc) father.
  • Conveniently Timed Distraction:
    • The Tamatebako provided the biggest distraction to help the Straw Hats, the Firetank pirates, Caesar, and the Vinsmokes escape Big Mom and her crew when it blows up the base of the Whole Cake Chateau and it starts tipping over.
    • In Chapter 886, when Oven starts hurting Chiffon, Sanji wants to save her but doesn't want to risk blowing his cover. When Oven is about to punch Chiffon, Pound comes charging in to protect his daughter. Sanji uses this opportunity to attack Oven and save Chiffon and Pound without revealing his identity by moving so fast that no one can see him.
  • Cool Big Sis:
    • Vinsmoke Reiju loved her younger brother, Sanji, but was forced to hide it and help him in secret after seeing firsthand what will happen if she showed "weakness" in a family that believes in Might Makes Right and Virtue Is Weakness. When she learned that Sanji was imprisoned and left to rot in the family dungeons, she freed him with her own hands and helped him escape, telling him to find people who actually love him and never come back. Years later, after Sanji was forced back home by Capone Bege on Judge's orders, Reiju continued helping him and offering moral support behind the scenes. When Sanji became despondent after learning what truly happened to his mother, Sora, Reiju tells him that he's not a failure as Judge and his brothers believed, and his ability to feel compassion was a constant reminder that Sora's Heroic Sacrifice was not in vain.
    • Chiffon is technically older than Lola due to them being identical twin sisters, but she was delighted in hearing of Lola's pirate adventures and supports Bege's plan to assassinate Big Mom because she was going to send assassins after Lola for running away from an important political marriage.
    • Lola herself was implied to have a similar relationship with Pudding, as the latter looks up to her and believes her to be a better fit as Minister of Cacao Island. On the day she ran away, Lola gave her an Affectionate Gesture to the Head and assured Pudding that she would be alright, and that Big Mom would understand...
    • A gender-inverted example with Pedro, who was mentioned in Chapter 864 by Charlotte Oven to be like "Pekoms' older brother". And despite working for an Emperor's crew, Pekoms still fondly remembers Pedro and was saddened by his death.
    • Another gender-inverted example with Katakuri, who is worshiped and admired by almost all of his siblings. However, once the chips are down, it's Brulee who continues to regard him highly despite knowing how he truly acts behind closed doors, since he defended her honor in a brother's rage as kids. Fittingly, in SBS 89, he was ranked the most popular older brother by Flampe's sibling surveys, followed by Oven and Perospero.
    • From the same SBS volume, Charlotte Smoothie is revealed to be similarly admired by her younger siblings, ranking in 1st place in Flampe's surveys as the most popular older sister, followed by Amande and Brulee.
  • Cool Bike: Little Charlotte Anglaise, as part of his Greaser Delinquents get-up, rides into Big Mom's library on a huge caterpillar with Harley-Davidson handlebars for antennae. Not only is it cool, but it's also absolutely adorable.
  • Cool Chair: Judge's throne in the Germa castle has a horned skull motif, which is kind of cool. He also sits there at mealtimes when he's home.
  • Cool Mask: Judge's mask makes him look like he could fit right in the wrestling ring.
  • The Corrupter: Both Mother Carmel and Streusen were this for Big Mom. Mother Carmel kept forgiving Big Mom every time she got in trouble (to get Big Mom to trust her so she could sell her off to the Marines), which left the girl with zero moral understanding of her actions. Streusen, in an eerie parallel to Doflamingo and his Executives, fed Big Mom delusions of creating a peaceful utopia and enabled her worst traits until she became an utter monster today.
  • Crapsaccharine World: Totto Land is a lovely group of islands where there is no discrimination, lots of food and sweets, and cheerful flowers who sing about a tea party... from Hell. Especially in the part where they sing about gathering ingredients — they apparently murder people to get them. Even the trees and flowers in the Seducing Woods like to play games of deaths with their visitors. For civilians, the price of living in Big Mom's territory is paying a "soul tax" with your life force every six months. And according to Brulee, if you try to leave Totto Land, you'll die. Then there's the fact that Totto Land and its islands are ruled over by the Charlotte family, who all seem like gracious hosts on the outside, but are really just a Big, Screwed-Up Family whose members, especially Big Mom, are mostly homicidally insane to the point where they make their allies, the Vinsmoke family, looks like the ideal family in comparison.
  • Creepy Child:
    • Little Charlotte Anana thinks using knives to mutilate her stuffed animal and pop her brothers' balloons is a fun time.
    • Charlotte Pudding. She Used to Be a Sweet Kid at first, but years of abuse and ridicule from both her family and her peers made her snap while still a child and lash out at her childhood tormentors in extremely violent ways, stabbing at least one kid bully and chasing after the rest with a knife.
    • Big Mom herself was a tragic case when she was younger; while otherwise a Cheerful Child, she was too physically strong for her own good and because her Parental Substitutes constantly enabled her worst traits, she didn't grow up with a proper moral compass, meaning she would severely injure the other kids in her orphanage and even kill wild animals without any understanding of what she had done. She also developed her eating disorder at this age, going on a blind, murderous rampage when asked to fast for an Elbaf tradition.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Sanji handed his brother Yonji his ass offscreen. The following chapter shows Yonji trying to repair his rearranged face, which was severely bent out of shape.
    • Sanji's older brothers Ichiji and Niji stopped a bloody civil war on Broccoli Island in just four hours.
    • Through a combination of being exhausted from battling Cracker for 11 hours, Sanji's vicious beatings, self-inflicted starvation, and superior enemy numbers, Luffy was no match for Big Mom's army.
    • Unsurprisingly, Brook didn't stand much of a chance against Big Mom herself. Luckily, he was able to achieve his objective (obtain a copy of the Poneglyphs) before he was curb-stomped.
    • Pretty much everyone vs Big Mom when forced to buy time for Caesar to escape with Bege's body (who has most the heroes inside him). She takes them all out easily and was on the verge of killing them if not for the fact that treasure box from Fishman Island finally being opened (well, dropped) and exploding at the base of the castle, destabilizing it.
    • Sanji himself often got curbstomped by his older and younger brothers as a young kid, just for being born with his empathy still intact. The fact that all his brothers are enhanced except for him makes it worse. It would make his later fight with Yonji mentioned above Laser-Guided Karma.
    • The Vinsmoke family vs. Nusstorte's forces. In the manga, it happened off-screen, with the Vinsmokes standing over the bodies of their defeated foes. But the anime expanded on this by having Nusstorte's forces invade the Germa Kingdom, to steal the Vinsmokes' secret cloning technology... only for the Vinsmoke siblings to ambush and utterly curbstomp them.
    • Ichiji tried fighting Katakuri. The manga showed who won by depicting Katakuri holding Ichiji's battered body by the face.
