• Gilead's influence is established as extending into Canada, carrying out espionage and assassinations there with apparent ease.
• The forced resettlements of the Children of Ham is expanded upon in passing, revealing that the "national homelands" they were exiled to were fenced-off ghost towns with no food or water. While some managed to escape into Canada, countless more perished.
• Agnes' molestation at the hands of Becka's father, made all the more chilling by his casual demeanor throughout. It's later established that he sexually abuses Becka, too. This eventually leads to her suicide.
  • Becka's ordeal takes a shocking turn during an art class, when she abruptly slits her wrist with a sharp tool. She survives, but while she's being taken to hospital she nonchalantly bids Agnes goodbye.
• While it isn't depicted directly, Ofkyle's death in childbirth turns a celebratory gathering into utter panic. While some concern for her condition is shown, it's heavily implied she was sacrificed in order to save the baby. She is buried in a simple grave and eulogized as having made the ultimate sacrifice, despite being forced into becoming a Breeding Slave.
