Well, now you know where A New Hope got its massacre at the Lars homestead scene from.
- Various moments from the pre-massacre scene were pretty disturbing.
- A pack of birds had flown away after getting started by the pack.
- Martha nervously watched her husband as he tried to remain calm, but takes his gun with him.
- Ben was wishing his uncle Ethan was there to protect them.
- Lucy screamed her lungs out as she realized they were in danger, complete with a close-up to her screaming face.
- And finally, when Martha sent the 10-year old Debbie through a window to hide from the Comanches, she comes across the tombstone of Ethan's mother. Suddenly, Chief Scar's shadow slowly looms over her and he physically appears and blew his horn signaling the massacre. And Smash to Black.
- The massacre scene itself is both scary and a Tear Jerker, even if the actual massacre happens onscreen and all we see is the aftermath.
- Ethan, Martin and the troop had just gotten back to his area and went closer to the havoc of the scene, and then Ethan saw some of Martha's clothing (her blue dress). All that was left was a smoking, burning doorway, and the butchered bodies of Ethan's brother (Aaron), sister-in-law (Martha), and nephew (Ben). The worst part is, we don't even find out what kind of torture the three of them had suffered, and it's been suggested that Martha was raped.
- Plus, picture the situation from Debbie's perspective. She's ten years old, and she to witness nearly her entire family being slaughtered by an opposing race and being helpless to stop it; to add to that pain, she was also kidnapped by said race along with Lucy who had been killed, and didn't get rescued for five years. She's lucky to still be alive after all of that. Somebody give Debbie some therapy!
- Ethan, Martin and Brad (Lucy's fiancé) are scouting when Ethan sees something in a canyon and tells Brad and Martin to go ahead and he'd catch up. When he comes upon them later, Ethan is missing his greatcoat. When pressed about where his coat is, he reveals that he had found Lucy in the canyon and buried her. Brad asks "Was she...was she...?" Ethan snaps "What do you want me to do?! Draw you a picture?!" Yeah...we have a pretty good idea what happened to her.
- After five years of searching and looking for every available lead, Ethan and Martin finally find Debbie. After Martin brings up childhood memories, Debbie (who is now married to Scar) tells them that she's a Comanche woman. That's when Ethan draws his pistol and tells Martin to stand aside. It's chilling to see a man who (despite his deep hatred for Indians) has been looking for his niece (who might actually be his daughter with Martha) completely snap and prepare to kill her for suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.
