Nightmare Fuel / The Pebble and the Penguin

Go To

  • Everything about Drake. At first he seems like a typical jerk jock, but when he is angered, he quickly reveals his true colors as a vicious, murderous psychopath of a penguin. Dropping the smarmy accent and just growling. Just the scene of Hubie staring at the massive penguin marching over towards Hubie, with a wicked grin and evil looking eyes, and the background turning red, tells you all you need to know about Drake, and how utterly screwed Hubie is.
    • When Hubie bravely tries to keep the pebble away from Drake, he gets mad, and tries to straight up murder Hubie by throwing him into the water where the Leopard Seal is lurking...
    • Drake, who's basically a Domestic Abuser played disturbingly straight in a kid's movie. These lines from his Villain Song are particularly chilling:
Drake: Don't make me laugh so hard that YOU begin to ACHE!
Drake: May I suggest you would do best to beg!
    • Even without the Domestic Abuse angle, Drake is a hideously massive and well-muscled penguin, who is as strong and as ferocious as he looks, as he can effortlessly crush any other penguin with his fists. He has large teeth, and seemingly fur on his face-so much so, his face looks somewhat like a wolf's-, with ominous looking colors as Ebert notes, and his well muscled arms can easily crush stone, and toss rocks with little effort.
    • Drake's brief scene with the Skuas shows him holding onto bones that the Skuas are feeding on, with Drake giving orders to them. The fact that he is powerful enough, and vicious enough to have a Penguin's predator take orders from him is terrifying, and shows he is much stronger and more vicious than he looks.
    • Drake kidnapping Marina. He straight up manhandles and carries her to his lair, laughing all the way like a maniac. If Hubie hadn't arrived in time, who knows what the massive horny penguin would have done to her...
Hubie: Get your filthy flippers off my girl!
Drake: *In a smarmy voice* Hubie... We thought you were dead!
      Hubie: You heard me Drake!
Drake: *snarls* Now you are gonna wish that you were ...
    • When Hubie does land his first good blow on Drake, kicking him in the face, knocking him down the steps with his cape on his face, he simply laughs, and just goes after Marina.
    • Drake's real death. After he emerges through the rubble, and tosses the massive stone at the heroes, it was heavy enough to topple the entire lair. The massive rock immediately falls on top of Drake, and if you freeze frame it, you can see him squished, with his cape attached to the rock. This might not have killed him immediately, as he is still screaming as the rock falls within the collapsing lair.
  • The Leopard Seal.
    • The penguins are frightened by the seal for a good reason. At first they don't see it... until Hubie falls into the water, where a massive mouth full of teeth, and wide, crazed eyes surrounding the tinier penguin nearly crushes Hubie.
    • The Nostalgia Critic himself is alarmed by how LARGE this seal really is, as he put it in his own words, Hubie is chased by THE WORLD's FREAKING LARGEST SEAL. He does point out how there are humans and penguins on screen together, showing some relative sense of scale. And Hubie nearly fits cleanly in one of these seal's mouth. He was very surprised to find out that these seals do get that big in real life.
    • The design of the Leopard Seal itself is unnerving. A classic Don Bluth nightmare cat style, with whiskers, sharp fangs, large cat eyes, and the sheer ferocity of the Leopard Seal's attacks.
    • At one point, Hubie drops the pebble, near a waiting seal, who looks at it drop down the steps. He simply waits, staring down at Hubie, just daring him to grab it. As he fumbles, the seal takes its sweet time, unhinging its jaws, and chomping on solid rock where Hubie once was.
  • The Killer Whales. In many a family film, killer whales have been shown to be lovable pals. In this film, they're shown to be as predatory as they are in real life. There is a very good reason why Rocko is absolutely terrified of these predators...
    • This dialogue single handedly encapsulates why.
Hubie: It was bigger than a leopard seal!
Rocko: Twice as big. Twice as fast. And twice as mean.
      Hubie: Oh good...
    • This is proven true, as the Orcas do get to show the sheer size and scale in all their majestic glory, of how utterly colossal they are compared to 'The world's freaking largest seal,' with all the power that size entails. They are also impossible to outswim, as they can cruise by and easily sneak up on and jumpscare the penguins, and breach the water at incredibly tall heights. And considering what a nasty, vicious piece of work the Leopard Seal was in the film, they are indeed more ruthless than the seal, especially the orca that goes after Hubie.
    • What is worse than one orca chasing after the penguins? How about three?
Hubie: Wonderful. What's the worst part?
Rocko: Killer whales always travel in groups.
      Hubie: Oh no... oh noo...
Rocko: Groups! BIG Groups! Lots! Oodles and oodles!
    • Their high pitched cries, squeals, and squeaks do not diminish their threat level. If anything it serves to make them more unnerving when they pursue the heroes.
    • When Hubie sees the orca coming after him, he tries pointing a large harpoon at the predator. These things are notorious for being specifically designed to kill larger whales. This only pisses off the killer whale as it proceeds to obliterate the whale killing weapon by plowing through the spear, completely unaffected, but enraged. At this point, the sky itself turns red, Hubie loses the titular pebble for good, and never even attempts to get it back, even though he previously risked his life against a leopard seal to get it back.
    • The murderous Death Glare the orca gives Hubie before the gigantic, 30-foot behemoth launches him up in the air and tries to eat him on the spot.
    • Rocko tries one last ditch effort to distract the orcas as Hubie has to swim to the iceberg. He charges at the orca, only to harmlessly bounce off the clearly enraged whale. The worst part is while he grabs the attention of the other two whales, it doesn't work on the one chasing after Hubie, as it turns around and charges after Hubie once more. That orca is almost as scary and persistent as SHARPTOOTH.
    • That last lunge attack. The killer whale chasing Hubie dives deeper to get some momentum, as it furiously leaps into the sky, with the close up of its gaping teeth, and downright demonic eyes emoting pure, hellish rage, as Hubie barely escapes this last attack, though it causes the entire iceberg to shake, before the whale breaches back into the water, disappearing for good.
    • Even worse, they don't actually get defeated, apart from not killing the heroes, which took everything the penguins had just to survive and escape.
