Nightmare Fuel / The House (2022)

Go To

  • Chapter 1's puppets fall right into the Uncanny Valley; Every character has faces that look too small for their heads. This works in the short's favour when the real horror begins.
  • Each short has long atmospheric scenes just showing the empty corridors of the house. It helps build the anticipation that something is wrong with this place and makes the impact of the oncoming dread much more effective.
  • Van Shoonbeek's construction crew in Chapter 1; they look human, but they rarely ever emote and only seem to work when nobody's watching them. At one point, Mabel walks in on a gang of them, and they all just stand there and watch her in total silence. None of them actually do anything to harm her, but the fact that the one shred of emotion they show is an Evil Laugh at Mabel's expense is incredibly creepy.
  • Van Shoonbeek himself, from his almost-human appearance to his permanent smirk. Even before he starts playing Raymond and Penny like puppets, even before the Humanoid Abomination aspects of his character are revealed, there's something immensely disturbing about him. His introduction is especially creepy, given that his sedan chair randomly appears behind Raymond in the middle of the woods, and our first good look at him features his grinning face pressing up against the window, giggling eerily.
  • In the finale of Chapter 1, the upper corridors of the House abruptly dissolve into a seemingly endless crossroads of passageways leading off into nowhere, to the point that Mabel fears that she and Isobel might starve to death if they can't find a way back to the inhabited levels... and they can't, being forced to sleep in the corridor, in near-total darkness.
Mabel: I don't know where to go, Isobel. I'm lost.
  • In Chapter 2, the shot of the Developer curled on the kitchen floor surrounded by dozens of dead beetles and maggots. Followed by a Gross-Up Close-Up.
  • In the climax of Chapter 2, the Odd Couple and their extended family throw a welcome home party for the Developer, applauding merrily for him... but none of them say a word and none of them emote in the slightest. Then, without warning, they all begin rhythmically clapping in perfect unison, until their clapping forms the beat of the hellish music accompanying the finale. And some of the guests appear to be sporting an additional pair of arms in this scene...
  • The ending of the second segment. The Developer reverts to an animalistic state and joins the insects in eating and destroying the house.
  • Just the whole concept of Chapter two; working so hard and putting everything on hold to finish a project only to be callously dismissed. The only people interested are purely there to take advantage of your sorry situation, and nobody is coming to help.
  • Chapter 3 might be lighter than the other segments, but it still plays the gradual rising of the floodwaters for a very subtle, gnawing dread, drawing attention to the fact that flowering plants once high above the waterline are slowly being drowned - a sure sign that time is running out for the House.
