  • The simple fact that it's only 1940, and the bulk of the horrors of WWII is yet to happen. Unlike the characters, the audience has the knowledge of what is about to unfold, and it looms heavily on the entire film.
  • Heinrich Himmler casually telling other dinner guests how disabled children are being murdered under his orders by doctors as if it's the most natural thing in the world, mentioning their current method won't be enough as well and that drastic "solutions" will be needed for people in the east.
  • The massacre scene, made infinitely worse by the knowledge that such events really did happen.
