They look like a lovely bunch, don't they?

The strange prehistoric world of Tail of the Sun can sometimes get a bit too strange for its own good.

  • The game world itself is very barren and eerie, and the primitive (no pun intended) graphics don't help ease the feeling of aloneness. It makes sense contextually; after all, you're a caveman fighting for survival in an untamed world dominated by hostile creatures, but it doesn't make it any less ominous. Hell, even after you've grown your tribe's numbers, you're still the only person out there in the world, as the village is completely empty aside from the huts scattered around.
  • The game's very first loading screen (which serves as the page image) greets you with several rows of bizarre-looking and frankly rather unsettling faces staring you down.
  • Upon starting your first game or whenever your current caveman dies, you are prompted to select a member of your tribe to play as, all while two ghostly faces hover around your chosen character and a chilling music track (consisting of sinister synth and slow breathing) plays. To make matters worse, many of the faces from the loading screen mentioned above will appear on your cavemen, and they're way closer to the viewer this time around.
  • The music track "Wild Child & Manmos"note , played after you see the end of the game. It's rather short and consists of various creature noises, and it ends with a pretty loud sting and the trumpeting of a mammoth. The longer, arranged version is even worse, making the melody more frenetic and tense, adding the frequent wailing of an animal (or possibly human), and it ends with even more Scare Chords and the mammoth roar from the original has an ever greater echo to it. It really drives home the point that, as the back of the game cover puts it, that "man is animal and the mammoth is king."
