Nightmare Fuel / Sunset Overdrive

Go To

  • The opening of the game plays the "Apocalypse" part of "Awesomepocalypse" more seriously than the rest of the game, with the player character being noticeably more afraid sounding while running from the OD. Even the gameplay abstractions and the phallic design of the Flaming Compensator don't detract from the fact that they're desperately trying to get back to their apartment to barricade themselves in while people die in droves around them. Is it any wonder the first thing they do after blocking all the entrances to their apartment is chug a cold one?
    • The "3 Hours Ago" flashback also shows off the beginning of the Horror Night and it is not pretty. In the middle of an obnoxious rave that the player (who was a Fizzco janitor) very clearly hates picking up trash at, one of the ravers comes stumbling towards the player looking drunk. Then you notice the discolored patches of skin, the slowly expanding boils full of Overdrive and the fact that he's clearly in a lot of pain. Then he completes his mutation. As at least five other OD barrel around the corner (with one attacking a Bushido girl scout trooper) causing the Player to run for their life before scaling a building to see Sunset City in flames. If it weren't for the overall goofy tone of the entire game, it'd be an incredibly bleak story.
  • There's an objective in the Fargarthia arc where the player has to strip down and go wading in pools full of leeches to collect them, and a rather upsetting wet "crunch" noise occasionally plays when they latch on. For Vermiphobes or any player that just does not like leeches, this sequence can be hard to play. The fact that it's directly followed up by a Mushroom Samba sequence doesn't help.
  • Bryllcream's first predicament: Being stuck in complete isolation with no one to hear you scream in a dumpster truck for so long that you end up eating your own limbs. It's also slightly implied that Bryllcream might have gone a little insane from his isolation. Granted, it's played for dark humor, but it's still horrifying.
  • For some, Fizzie Blimp's third stage can be this when you damage him enough. His eyes light up on fire(literally) and they make Fizzie look demonic. Then, his "face" melts off and reveals his insides on fire, wich makes him look even scarier.
  • Fizzco. Though their actions are sometimes played for dark laughs they are shown to be extremely ruthless and evil. After their negligence and greed cause a massive outbreak of mutants in Sunset city they decide to wall the whole place off with invisible force fields that vaporize anything that gets too close. This leads to Walter's death when he and the player try to escape via aircraft. When the surviving residents show signs of making escape attempts Fizzco then deploys an army of killbots to exterminate them all. After THAT fails to stop the survivors they decide to simply level the entire city with a giant robot. All just to prevent word of their immoral practices getting out and tarnishing their reputation.
