The creature itself is pretty damn scary. Imagine a tall, humanoid shark monster, hunched over and with its teeth constantly on display, and you start to get the picture. It is made very clear in the movie that the creature is not just some peaceful, docile predator simply acting on its natural instincts in order to survive. No, this is an outright sadistic monster, who kills for no other reason than pure, barbaric fun.
