127 Hours is based on a real experience of someone cutting off his own limb to survive, and this film perfectly captures that feeling of isolation and tension.
- The idea that you're rock climbing, and everything goes well until you make one wrong move, and a rock crushes your arm. No supernatural elements here, all of it could conceivably happen even on the best of hikes.
- The fact that the story is a real re-telling of one man's predicament.
- Cranked up to eleven when, in the middle of cutting off his arm with a dull knife, he reaches a nerve bundle that, despite everything else he had done to himself, was still electrically painful. The sound effects that go with it only make it worse.
- The jump scare with Scooby-Doo.
