  • Firstly there's the antagonist, Willie Rumson, who has a rather special relationship with the protagonist and is every inch the bully. He has a spelled out protection from the law thanks to his uncle being the Sheriff, helping to create an atmosphere of Adults Are Useless.

  • The entirety of the book is written in first person limited perspective, including the events for Make-Out Island. This means the reader is treated to a rather vivid description of a scared teen being kidnapped, rather violently debased, humiliated, and terrorized, then getting abandoned in an unfamiliar location with a threat of worse violence looming over his head via four of the victim's five senses. (He's blindfolded before hand, but that really more adds to the uneasiness.) It's also shown that Willie's gang move from reluctant to enthusiastic participants, and Rumson himself has a violent temper, meaning Bobby is quite justified as he panics while this is happening to him.
  • The sequence was adapted for the Film of the Book, substituting the POV with a bit of backstory about Rumson being sent to Vietnam for mutilating another person (biting off his ear). When Willie is lying on top of Bobby, whispering in his ear, you can't help but fear Rumson may repeat his trick.
