The PBS series:

  • In "Hitler's Lost Sub," a former German submariner describes the terror that is living through a depth charge attack.
"It is a scary experience to hear a depth charge dropping into the water, and then expect in about five or ten seconds an explosion to go off, which one does not know at this time one will survive. After the explosion goes off, then of course the next one's already coming. This can go on for ten hours at a time, with hundreds of depth charges. And each one is really quite a strain on your nerves because all you're doing is sitting and waiting for something to happen. There's nothing you can do. You can just sit there and wait."
  • "The Science of Murder" has footage of an autopsy. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
  • "Submarines, Secrets, and Spies" talks about Project Jennifer, in which the CIA built a massive ship with a claw to pick up the wreck of a Soviet ballistic missile submarine in the Pacific. As they were pulling it up, three of the arms gave way, causing the submarine to slip and a nuclear missile slid out of its tube. Fortunately it didn't detonate upon hitting the ocean floor, or when a large chunk of the sub broke apart and fell on top of it.
