Even Primary school children putting alternative but still relatively faithful slants on the Nativity story can have its scary moments.
Original Film
- Even if it didn't actually happen, Mr Poppy suggests implying Mr Maddens' dog Cracker to have been Killed Offscreen. Mr Poppy suggests confessing to have filled her up with explosives until she blew up and does so to Jennifer's parents behind Mr Maddens' back. It is notable that after this point in the movie, Cracker only appears in a flashback sequence to when Mr Maddens and Jennifer were still together up which ends with Jennifer walking out. Thankfully, she reappears with Mr Maddens and Jennifer at the end but still...
- Imagine how William and Saffron's parents must have felt when their kids accompanied Mr. Maddens to California without their prior knowledge and the time Mrs Bevan would have had trying to explain this after she found out.
- Obviously it's bloodless because it's a play but Gordon Shakespeare has his students re-enact the slaughter of innocent infants at the behest of King Herod. The promotional posters for the show depict Herod's name on a black background with blood dripping from the letters, giving a rather eerie hint at what's to come.
- The death-slide scene, TJ's mother is scared out of her wits when she sees her son doing this.
- Mr. Poppy poking his head through the curtains in his Christmas star costume can be a bit unsettling with only the bright white spotlight illuminating his face and the sudden instance of him disappearing behind the curtains.
- At one point, the electricity short-circuits, plunging the stage into darkness. The children are understandably scared and start screaming until Mr. Maddens gives them candles.
The sequels
- Doru and his father are refugees from Syria who are implied to be have fled their home due to War. They arrive on a boat that is overflowing with other refugees and who's to say there were not any instances of people falling overboard and drowning along the way (like Doru's mother for instance)?
