Nightmare Fuel / Mortasheen

  • In short nearly every single monster in the biomechanical city of Mortasheen is disgusting, horrifying or (usually) both despite including some silly elements. Some especially notable examples include:
    • The Vorlune. It's a humanoid monster from another universe who has a head bigger than the entire rest of its body combined and a permanent Slasher Smile. It is so completely full of holes that you can see straight through it and it can spread the holes like an infection causing other living things to temporarily have pieces of them banished to other dimensions. Personality wise though the Vorlune is actually one of the friendlier monsters.
    • The Excorimander. It's a snake-like horror with bulging eyes and a tusked Slasher Smile that steals skin and wears it like a cloak. Some of the skin still has faces or breasts attached so the Excorimander has provably killed many, many people before.
    • The Nemateuthis. It looks like a warped pink frog with around a dozen long, tan-colored worms spilling out of its mouth and acting like tentacles. Two of the worms even have massive jaws like a bobbit worm. Now, this in and of itself isn't too bad by Mortasheen standards, but the Nemateuthis is also gigantic, to the point that it could easily bite a human in half.

  • It's not explicitly stated, but it's hinted that Mortasheen is built on Earth in the far future. So in-universe this polluted biomechanical monster-infested hellhole is actually the fate of our own planet.

  • The world that Mortasheen is in is so horrifying that the Vampires are some of the least disturbing monsters in it, if only because they clearly resemble real-life animals and are based on a recognizable mythical creature.

  • The Longfellow is Nothing Is Scarier personified. Anyone who has one can never remember how or why they've bonded with one, no one can recall how it moves or attacks, no one knows what happens to its victims since it doesn't eat like a normal creature even by Mortasheen standards, its hat defies spatial causality to block any view of its head, all organic and mechanical visual sensory is barely able to register it in broad daylight or even record how tall it is consistently, and all non- visual sensory picks it up as a cold, empty hole in space.

  • The writer is fascinated with real world parasites, so when he designed Mortasheen he made it so that many, many, many monsters are parasitic. Even some of the Jokers are parasites. This is taken up to eleven with the Wormbrains who are mind-controlling brain flukes who often infest other parasites inside even larger monsters they use as organic mechs.
