Nightmare Fuel / Mario '85

Go To

  • MX is this incarnate; his very presence is enough to twist the world to become far more horrifying, he's an absolute brute capable of throwing someone into a flag pole hard enough to shear them in half on impact and smash through blocks and pipes, and his general appearance (a hulking, twisted version of Mario with empty eyes, darker colors and pale skin) is just disturbing.
    • Nekoamon, the Syobon Action version of MX, is also rather creepy with a big Slasher Smile and unlike MX, he does not let the player just get away easily, even destroying the ground in order to prevent them from escaping. The Jump Scare where he turns red and makes a loud roar near the beginning doesn't help either.
  • There's a post from Taco Games depicting Lucas's initial encounter with MX, shown as an out-of-place-looking floating head in the center of the otherwise bright and cheery game.
"You're just going to go to sleep for a bit. Don't worry, the lights don't hurt."
  • There's a rather unsettling image of Lucas's green-tinted face in a dark void, with this text at the top and bottom:
    LOOK AT HIM.

  • As of the unfinished 1-2 demo, the title screen has been overhauled. It now shows the regular title screen of Super Mario Bros., but with the title changed to Mario '85 and the copyright text listing MX as the owner. This might not seem so bad, but then you press the start button and Mario suddenly starts facing the screen with his face stretching out into a Ghostly Gape while a distorted version of the 'Time's up' theme plays.
    • Even "better", leaving the screen alone long enough causes this to happen anyway. MX is not a patient person.
  • In the updated demo for 1-1, while MX no longer murders a Toad in front of Lucas, he instead pretends to be normal Mario and tells him that there's a prize back at the start, upon doing so he then yells "LUCAS!" very loudly as he starts chasing him.
