Nightmare Fuel / Life Is Strange: True Colors

  • How Gabe dies. After rescuing Ethan from the ravine, the sound of a mining alarm cuts through the air. After a series of non-verbal Oh, Crap! reactions, Gabe is hit in the chest by a plummeting rock which sends him flying off the edge of the ravine. And Alex is still tied to him after he helped belay her rope.
    • If that didn't kill him, the ensuing avalanche that completely buries him in debris likely did. We never get any confirmation if there was even a body to recover.
  • Eleanor's onset of Alzheimer's disease is unsettling, particularly because Alex sees the world through Eleanor's perspective. The fog obscuring the world outside just drives home the general feeling of loneliness and isolation victims feel when the disease manifests itself.
  • Ryan's emotional state during the end of chapter 2 is just him standing on a large platform of dirt and debris. Beyond that is nothing but pure darkness.
  • The scene before this shows Alex seeing the world through Ethan's eyes. The ravine below turns into a jagged mouth and a pair of malevolent purple eyes, twisting into a demonic face embedded in the rocks.
  • How Charlotte sees the world in her angered state. Everything around her serves as a reminder of what happened to Gabe, and when Alex interacts with the objects, she furiously derides who it is meant to represent. Whether it be Alex, Gabe, Ryan, or even her own son Ethan.
  • Typhon's persistent tracking, shadowing and threatening of people they deem "high risk".
    • After confronting Mac at the bridge and consequently absorbing his emotions, Alex is suddenly confronted by an unidentified person taking photos of her from across the street, while a camera next to the flower shop is pointed to her, reflecting the fact that Mac feels he's high on Typhon's radar for his cooperation to the company.
    • Diane's USB drive contains all kinds of files in which tabs are being kept on Alex, her friends and even employees of Typhon itself.
    • For all of Diana's involvement in Typhon's shady operations, she too is manipulated from above. In one e-mail, she is explicitly threatened if she doesn't go through with setting off the explosion that would ultimately kill Gabe.
    • At the police office, when Alex questions Pike why they can't defy Typhon and refuses to take the bribe, Pike is fearful and throws a folder on the table. It contains amongst other things detailed records and photos of Alex, Ryan and Steph's daily activities and meetings. It is heavily implied that they will be disposed of if they don't stop pursuing Typhon. Surely enough, Jed attempts to do just that to Alex at the end of the episode.
  • Selecting the 'what's happening' option when Jed cocks the gun and aims it at Alex. Alex is almost in disbelief that someone she trusted so closely is willing to hurt her. Regardless of what the player does, Jed will shoot Alex. If it weren't for the fact that the next chapter is already available, it wouldn't be a surprise for some to think that Alex was just Killed Off for Real.
  • Episode 5 explores Alex's childhood and experiences in the foster care system, and in best Life Is Strange tradition, it's full of psychological (fridge) horror.
    • Alex wakes up in Dr. Lynn's office, with the conversation referencing the one with which episode 1 starts, until it derails and it becomes clear Alex isn't really back at the foster care community.
      Alex: You're wrong. I don't belong here.
Dr. Lynn: If that were true, Alex, you'd know you were talking to an empty chair. (cue the camera panning around to reveal Alex is the only person in the office)
    • Gabe appears in Alex's dream. Surely he has to try and comfort Alex right away, right? Wrong. Before he's done making his point, he coerces Alex into reliving the most traumatic moments of her life, all while maintaining a stone cold, matter of fact attitude, until he tells her to "Play [her] part". Then he proceeds to play his, and instantly switches into the behavior of the petulent boy he was. If Alex misses a spot in her memory he will force her to try to reconstruct the moment again.
    • The gloomy hospital room where Alex's mother spends her final moments is unsettling, especially the part where you have the pull back the curtains yourself to see the state Alex' mother is in.
    • The unkempt home of the Chen family following Mrs. Chen's death and the tension between Gabe and Mr. Chen. The latter two end up arguing outside, and their distorted voices echo through the room. Alex can choose to drown out the noise with music, noticing that was the only way to maintain her sanity throughout these situations. At the end of the scene Mr. Chen walks out, leaving Gabe and Alex to their devices.
    • The claustrophobic, prison-like setting of the foster care room. There are a lot of items Alex can interact with here, revealing how traumatising the foster care system was for her.
    • A conversation can be found on Alex’s phone where the player discovers she was coerced into sex in exchange for a place to stay. Not only is this nothing but horrifying in it’s own right, it also says a lot about Helping Hands that Alex would go back to her date-rapist to try and ask again for a place to stay.
      • There's another interpretation of what happened - that the guy's lust overwhelmed Alex just as Mac's anger did. He may have genuinely thought that Alex was into it because in that moment she was, but only because she was absorbing his emotions. This is arguably even more horrifying, as it suggests that if the other person is sufficiently aroused, Alex may not be able to say no.
    • Back in the real world, Alex wakes up at the bottom of the mine shaft. She manages to light an oil lamp with the matches she had with her, but the lamp soon fails her. Using her powers, she lights up the abandoned tunnels with a red aura. The scene is absolutely unsettling as she limps towards the unknown thing Typhon has been trying to hide for so long.
