"Creatures are crawling, they will make you shudder..."
  • Mr. Scowler in the original version is a lot more intimidating than in the English dub, to the point of making him genuinely scary. He yells and continuously insults Lapitch, especially after the mayor and his son angrily leave, making him come across as abusive to the poor boy and driving him to run away.
  • Dirty Rat's song features some extremely freaky imagery, among them being terrifying rats creeping towards the screen; one of them even has 3 eyes. Though the English dub offsets this by making the song upbeat and exciting, the original Croatian version is a lot more sinister in both lyrics and the overall music - the rats (not just Dirty Rat) sing about making everything black and conquering the world, and the song ends as it ominously lingers on one note and the screen darkens on Dirty Rat, leaving his green eyes still visible.
  • Lapitch and Lisa wind up underwater, where they happily play with the fishes and clams with matching music. And then there's an ominous shot of a massive catfish lying in wait, before it darts in and starts chasing them both. The thing soon ends up nearly eating them, catching them in its mouth. Without Brewster jumping in after them and biting the monstrous fish's tail when it does catch them, it would've spelled their untimely doom...
  • In a village, Lapitch and Lisa take shelter at a house... then later that night, a fire breaks out at a nearby barn and everyone is panicked as they desperately but unsuccessfully try to put it out. Lapitch then risks his life by climbing on the roof - where he's in danger of either falling to his death or perishing in the flames - and trying to put it out from there. He ultimately survives, but the idea of a child like him doing something so dangerous is heart-stopping.
  • Mr. Scowler gets ambushed off-screen late in the movie as he heads out, and is tied to a tree in a creepy forest at night. That's already bad enough, but then a shadow appears and comes for him, taking out a knife as Scowler fears for his life before it suddenly cuts to black. The original Croatian version makes it even worse with much more menacing music and Scowler's scream getting cut-off in the midst of it when the scene ends. Even when it turns out later that the shadowed person was going to free Scowler from the ropes that bound him, it doesn't change the fact that this scene is terrifying to look at.
    • Not long after the above scene, the main cast gets lost in the woods after the flying spell wears off. What follows is several shots of branches that look positively alive and disturbing, some very creepy bats, and roots quite actively growing as though When Trees Attack was in play. As for the audio, both the English and Croatian dub make it terrifying in their own way; the Croatian dub uses wolf howls and creaking sounds and whispers as the branches and roots move about, while the English dub gives them roars instead and adds screams during the shots with the bats.
  • The climax is quite tense and dramatic, in part owing to it being extremely windy and still nighttime from preceding scenes. Dirty Rat shows up in a wagon and effortlessly grabs Melvin with his whip and tosses him into the forest just because he dared to stand in his way. When Lapitch takes his place, Dirty Rat is happy to run over him with the stolen horse, showing the lengths he's willing to go for his goals; the original version also has him say "This is your end", proving that he's full-on ready to kill a kid.
